QnA: What if PRDP clashed with Bajirao Mastani?

Continuation of our QnA.. Read the page if you haven’t

Q. What if Prem Ratan Dhan Payo clashed with Bajirao Mastani during Diwali? – Neeraj

A. Interesting question. Any clash between two big films will divide the number of available screens and shows both at multiplexes and single-screens. Ratio will differ, but business will be divided.

There are three stages for a big clash; One, getting a good release which includes booking single-screens in prime areas and ensuring that your films not only gets good amount of shows at multiplexes, but also gets shows at the right time slots (because evening / night shows perform better than morning / noon). Second stage is the opening, the period when star power ensures high occupancy in theatres. The third stage is when the word-of-mouth comes into play. The film that has the advantage in the last stage, should, in most cases, win the clash.

PRDP would have probably won the first two stages, but it’s in the third that Bajirao Mastani would have taken the lead. Also, the Salman starrer would have lost around 30-35% in its first weekend.

The advantage for a solo release is, the audience has no other choice. You either watch PRDP or you don’t watch a film. When there is a choice between two films, the film that finds appreciation among the audience, will automatically become the first choice, irrespective of the star cast. So to answer your question, PRDP would have easily lost around 60 crore if it released with Bajirao Mastani.

Q. Considering mixed response to Dilwale, what would have been lifetime collections had it released solo on 25 December? It would have easily crossed 100 crore in 3 days. What about lifetime? – Amit Jain

A. Like we mentioned in the last question, when there is no other choice, any big film has a serious advantage. If Dilwale released on 25th December, it would have taken a record opening, possibly the highest of all time.

Q. Dear Indicine, is box office collections everything nowadays? Is that the only way to count an actor’s greatness? Few days back I saw a Hrithik fan asking you to post an article on comparison between Bang Bang and Dilwale.. So that he can say Hrithik is better than SRK. I mean seriously, SRK has achieved everything that a other actor only can dream of.. But in the end the only thing is matter is crore clubs?

A. There are several ways to look at this. For the normal movie going audience, box office collections shouldn’t matter. If you like a star or like the trailer of a film, go and watch it. But for the same audience, box office collections could tell them whether to watch a film or not. If a film has opened strongly and sustains well, it means the audience is liking it.

From a star, there is nothing bigger than box office. If your movie is not collecting, people won’t invest in your films. These 100 crore and 200 crore clubs are very very important. Because if an actor is capable of delivering 200 crore grossers, producers can invest upwards of 100 crore on his films. With this, the scale, production design, big directors, world class technicians and everything else becomes more affordable. If you aren’t a star in India, but a great actor like Irrfan Khan, you can’t make a superhero film like Krrish. It won’t even collect 20 crore and the cost of production for such films becomes far more than what ‘talented actor but non-stars’ can recover.

Fan wars is something different altogether. Everyone likes to see their own favourite star at the top of the ranking and box office gives the correct picture of the current standing of an actor. About Hrithik vs SRK. Current standing and legacy of an actor are two different things. In a few years from now, if a young actor emerges and delivers bigger results, he will be compared. Even Ranveer Singh could challenge Salman/SRK at the box office in the future, he could be bigger some day, but that doesn’t mean his achievements and legacy are the comparable to those two.

  • @ indicine – i don’t think prdp lost that much money lost 30 crore may be possible if one can spend 400 rs. for a movie he can go other theater by spending 20-30 rs. more even if shows housefull.

  • I don’t care what paid critics & bhakts say about Dilwale my kid enjoyed it and wanna watch it once again that’s it.

  • one more thing i wanna say about srk fans and aamir’s statement- recent act are proving their comments on intolerence – what they wanna prove people suddenly show you what is intolerence after your comments not before so intolerence grew after your comments. mind it.

  • Team indicine were soo smarter
They can’t answer to these question never ever…..
    The question was
Dilwale + Bajirao mastani combined screes 5600 while HNY screens about 4000 only while ticket price in 2015 were higher as compared to last year
Dilwale + BM combined Sunday collection with almost full occupancy is only about 42 crore while HNY about 45 crore
    How ,.???????

  • What if Bajrangi Bhaijaan clashed Bajirao Mastani at Christmas ? I know you don’t have guts to answer this question.

    • @Star Wars and @Aakash, if you want an answer to your question, be polite and ask. If you post a question like a challenge, you will never get an answer. We are not here to prove our ‘guts’. Thanks.

  • Negativity+ Protests+ shows cancelled..
    DILWALE- 9.42

Positivity+ positive wom+ larger no. Of screens+ Support of all SRK Haters..
    BM- 9.40

  • 1st No is Good Question.

And Excellent answer by Team Indicine.
Prem Ratan Dhan Paya= 212 Cr (with solo release)
212-60= 152 Cr. If clash with a big release.

  • when eros manipulated figures during weekend.. no one bats an eye

but when red chillies reports fig which exceeds BOI fig by 1 cr.. everyone loses their minds!!

  • Like i thought! PRDP PRDP PRDP. Have you all forgotten BB?? It is like you haven’t forgotten but want to forget it :P Well i do understand because 300cr is something King of insecureness will never get XD

  • PRDP earned the HIT status because of Salman Khan. Otherwise it would have earned above average or flop since the timing of the movie was wrong. And the casting was wrong especially arman kholi. The story was good but the execution of it was bad and that unfortunately goes too Soorajs hand. Otherwise it would have gotten Blockbuster like every other movie. But that is WHAT IF! But dilwale …. Don’t even get me started at least it had some coherent script. Dilwale is as shitty as bird demic :P

  • @ Indicine Yesterday late night around 1.40 AM you published the 5th Day Collections of Dilwale and BM as 8.75 and 9.75 CR respectively . I have been a old follower of your website and you did not said these are estimates but are the confirmed collections of 5th Day . Today you published Dilwale – 9.42 CR and BM – 9.40 CR . So there is a lot of confusion regarding both these articles in my mind . I am not saying the collections are manipulated but please confirm about both the articles and please confirm whether the first article was correct or the second one . Thanks in Advance !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The big movies clashes are different now from much use of social media ??? Its impact is big on movies…???
Is Dilwale suffers big due to protest cum politics ???

  • prdp would sure lost the battle but any other salman movie wouldn’t salman stardom in india is umatchable i am not like any other srk who wouldn’t agree with it. here in islambad 14 shows for dilwale and 4 shows for bm, i think dilwale is all set to go above 200 cr in overseas

  • @indicine team, I ask several time but you didn’t answer my question…! How many footfall of PRDP?? Simple question but you always ignored. And if Bajrangi Bhaijaan clash with dilwale what would the collection of dilwale??

  • Why compare with PRDP. It was family drama which appeals to the very small section of audience.
    Then their was negativity also.
If you want to compare with Salman then assume that their was Salman in Dilwale and rest things about film were same.
If you are assuming this then don’t think what will happen to it with clash because clash will not happen then.
No one dares to clash with MEGASTAR SALMAN KHAN.

  • @hrithik fans. 8.5 CRORES and 9.4 CRORES. What’s the difference. Just around 90 lakhs. Should I remind u about bong bong of manipulation running in to 40 CRORES and above orOr k3 manipulation about 67 CRORES

@lallu fans. Shall I remind u of manipulation during prdp . Boi figures 190 CRORES and producers figures 213 CRORES. Should I say more.Just because Dilwale has started to hold well u are all peing in Ur pants u morons. Too much fun.
Dilwale is going to win the race

@xzone, bollybufd, dammn , romance Dilwale. Aman And all other SRK ians. Kindly note. Dilwale has picked up today in multiplexes today in Bangalore with multiple house full shows in Bangalore. Watched today again at 150 show in pvr forum.it was house full. My sincere request don’t let negativity spread. Dilwale is bouncing back pretty well. Its way ahead in single screens. So when star wars comes many multiplex shows would be lost. So bm would start coming down. Spread positivity.Dilwale to the core

  • I love Indicine team and appreciate the hard work and articles.. But genuinely believe they are biased towards SRK by large… Can we correct this Team Indicine, let’s play fair to better Hindi film Industry ..Dilwale, HNY certainly don’t deserve 4 stars

    • @Abhinav, there is no bias. PRDP got 4 stars too. Please go back and check the articles we had written when Bajrangi Bhaijaan released. We did write an article “Worrying signs for Dilwale” even though in hindsight it was too early to write that kind of an article.

Never been able to understand why people think media favours SRK, award ceremonies favour SRK, industry supports SRK.. why would anyone support an outsider, who was a nobody 2.5 decades ago? Maybe because he sells?

  • Don’t compare megastar salman bhai with srk. Srk acts well but he has no stardom whereas bhai carries whole movie on his shoulder and his stardom is unimaginable.
