Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP) Movie Review

Sooraj Barjatiya and Salman Khan have teamed up together thrice before and the first two times they came together, they created unparalled box office history with ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ and ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’. And they delivered the highest grosser of 1999 in the form of ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’.

So when Barjatiya and Salman reunite after 17 long years during the superstar’s best ever phase, expectations are sure to be raised high. But the trailers have promised a typical Rajshri film which may not hold a lot of value for the youth. However, if they do manage to bring the families to the theatres, PRDP can still make history. So how is the movie? Let’s find out!

Story: Vijay Singh (Salman) is the soon to be king of Pitampur but his brother Ajay Singh (Neil Nitin Mukesh) with the help of the estate’s manager Chirag Singh (Armaan Kohli) try to kill Vijay but he somehow survives. The Raj Dewan (Anupam Kher) who loves Vijay finds his lookalike Prem Dilwale (Salman again) to fill in for Vijay for the Rajtilak ceremony. Prem is diametrically opposite that of Vijay and is playful and innocent and manages to win over everyone, even Rajkumari Maithili (Sonam) who is supposed to get married to Vijay. Prem even mends the relationship of Vijay with his sisters Chandrika and Radhika. But what happens when Vijay gets fine? What happens to Ajay and Chirag? Who does Maithili end up with? To find out, watch the movie!

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo Movie Review

Screenplay and Direction: The first half of PRDP flows freely and the story moves along nicely whilst establishing the characters. The biggest problem with the movie is that the conflict doesn’t seem to be too big for it to matter later on when the conflict gets solved. However, we don’t mind this because Prem Dilwale’s innocent antics keep the film flowing and the audiences will like Salman’s act. The football match sequence and the sequence where Prem mends the relationship of Vijay with his step-sisters are the standout sequences. There are a fair few illogicalities too like the placement of a palace on the edge of a waterfall. At the end of the 160 minute duration, PRDP manages to make everyone smile and the emotions end up working which should in turn make the film work amongst the family audiences.

PRDP looks opulent and grand, and clearly a lot of money has been spent on the sets and the costumes. The production design is of high standards. The VFX work isn’t the best you have seen in Hindi films and the editing could have been tighter too but as we all know, Sooraj Barjatya believes in excesses.

Music: Himesh Reshammiya doesn’t deliver a chartbuster soundtrack but thankfully the placement of the songs are just about perfect and the music sounds a lot better in the movie. The songs which stay with the viewer are Jalte Diye, Halo Re, Prem Leela. And the biggest earworm of the season is the title track which seems to be everywhere. Himesh should have gotten someone like Sonu Nigam to sing the emotionally charged Bachpan Kahaan song. Also, the movie could have done with 2 fewer songs in the first half.

Acting: Salman Khan is Prem and he doesn’t put a step wrong throughout the film. He carries forward his style of acting and plays a variant of the character he has mastered by now. The innocent, bhola bhala North Indian who speaks with a smile, and he aces it yet again. Unfortunately, he isn’t too convincing as the King Vijay Singh. Sonam Kapoor was compared to Madhuri Dixit during the promotions but she doesn’t even come close to Sonali Bendre’s act in Hum Saath Saath Hain. The character of Maithili was crying out loud for a bigger star and a much better actor. Neil Nitin Mukesh does a good job as the evil brother who has a change of heart, but doesn’t have much to do in the film. Swara Bhaskar is dependably good but she doesn’t have a lot of scenes. Armaan Kohli is a major put off, his character and styling does tend to remind the audience of the horrendous ‘Jaani Dushman’. Anupam Kher is very good and portrays the Raj Dewan perfectly. Deepak Dobriyal is not allowed to fulfil his potential which we recently saw in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’, but he does justice with whatever he gets.

Conclusion: Prem Ratan Dhan Payo should be judged as an independent movie and not compared with classics like ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ and ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’. The film thoroughly entertains with very few dull moments if you can immerse yourself into the world of the movie. Sure there are a few silly and illogical moments but the innocence and the ‘sanskaar’ of the plot keeps the film together. And Salman Khan puts in a stellar performance as Prem Dilwala. In the first half of the film, he wins you over time and again, with a performance that could be better than his innocent act in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’

Diwali is the time when families come together and PRDP will be lapped up by families as it is a joyous movie which spreads smiles with its goodness. This festive season, give Prem Dilwala’s PRDP a try.

Pros:

  • Salman Khan is in top form as Prem Dilwale
  • The production design and costume design is of high standard
  • Impressive acts by Anupam Kher, Swara Bhaskar, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepak Dobriyal
  • Music goes well with the film
  • The goodness of the movie takes us back to the Rajshri world of goodness

Cons:

  • The chemistry between Salman and Sonam doesn’t work. It’s unfair to compare her to Madhuri, but a Barjatya film deserved a better leading lady.
  • Armaan Kohli fails to make an impact, he has a meatier role than Neil Nitin Mukesh!
  • The second half is slow-paced. The silly and illogical moments could make it hard for the youth to love it
  • The editing should have been tighter

Rating: ★★★★☆

It’s a 3.5 star movie to be honest, but Salman’s Prem Dilwala act and the fact that we don’t get to see such films in today’s times, gets it half a star more. Sooraj Barjatya films come once in 6-7 years and there is no director in the industry who can fill a film with as much goodness, sweetness and indian tradition as much as the legendary director can.

Advice for the youth. Watch the film with your family and not your friends, as PRDP is best enjoyed with your entire family. Your granny will love it, your parents will smile throughout the film and you’ll enjoy the second half better in their company.

  • Review from bollywood life have a look

Salman Khan plays dual roles of Prem Dilwale and Vijay. Vijay is the heir apparent of the kingdom of Pritampur, who has a messed up family with his stepbrother wanting to kill him, while his step sisters are just angry with him for being his father’s mistress’ daughters, and hence are outsiders. Prem, meanwhile, is the niwasi of Ayodhya who falls for a princess Maithili (Sonam Kapoor), who had come to his town for some charity work. Maithili is engaged to Vijay though she is not too happy about the arrangement. Due to the machinations of the stepbrother and his disloyal manager (Armaan Kohli), Vijay is involved in a near fatal accident (that should have really killed him, but it’s Salman, so….) and is left in a coma. Vijay’s loyal aides (Anupam Kher and Deepraj Rana) spot Prem and his friend (Deepak Dobriyal) in the market of Pritampur, where they are on their way to see Maithili. They hire him to take place of Vijay till the raaj tilak which happens four days later. Prem, with his do-gooder attitude, mend Vijay’s broken ties with his family members and also win Maithili’s heart in the process. More melodrama, more love songs, more tears, a damp squib of a fight scene in a mirror palace, families getting together and finally all is well. After all this is Barjatya film, so balls to you if you expect an un-sanskaaari ending!
    What’s hot

The only reason you bear this three hour long quiche of songs and melodrama is Salman Khan and his infectious charm. Though he falters a bit as the stiff Vijay, he is completely in his comfort zone as Prem. Be it his innocent laugh, his thok-jhok with Anupam Kher, his Hindi garbled with English speech, it’s a Salman show all the way. Though his act could be seen as an extension of what he did in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, you can’t help but smile with him when he is neck deep in his trademark goofiness. After Salman Khan, it’s Anupam Kher who makes the maximum impact. Sonam Kapoor looks pretty and puts in a decent act, though her chemistry with Salman Khan pales in front of camaraderie we see between him and Anupam Kher. Deepak Dobriyal and Swara Bhaskar are pretty good though their characters lack enough meat to match their talent. The first half is moves fairly well, as Salman Khan, Deepak Dobriyal and Anupam Kher provide many of the lighter moments. Special mention must also be given to Nitin Desai’s art direction and cinematography by V. Manikandan. Also, the choreography in PRDP title track is top-notch.
    What’s not

While it’s laudable on part of Sooraj Barjatya to stick to the sweetness of the nineties, anything in excess is harmful to your viewing pleasure. While I was quite happy with ’90s flavour in the first half, the over-melodrama in the second half brings us the memories of the cringe-worthiness seen in the ’80s era. The biggest loophole is that it’s 2015 and Barjatya hasn’t moved ahead with the times. The film has excess of everything, be it the length, the songs, the melodrama, but today’s audience has limited patience to bear all that. Less is always more and that’s something Sooraj needs to accept. Also unlike his previous ventures which had some truly memorable characters (Bauji and Tuffy, remember anyone?), except for Prem, none of the characters tugs to your heart in PRDP. From the start till the end, you know how the film will move and how it will end – it’s a potpourri of cliches. And if you guessed it right, Yay! You are eligible to write the screenplay of Rajshri Films’ next venture.

The editor seems to have forgotten that he had a job to do, as a few sequences get stretched too much to ruin your patience (WTF was the football song all about? It was so unfunny that I actually pitied Sonam Kapoor for smiling throughout the scene…and that fight scene in the climax, so drenched in the tackiness of the ’70s!). The plot screams to you for bringing your brains to the movie. How come Vijay survived a huge fall of the cliff with just a few minor bruises and a unpronounceable condition, both which disappear within four days? Why did Vijay’s father made his palace at the edge of the waterfall and yet has so weak ledges that even a child can easily dismantle it? Why does Neil Nitin Mukesh and Armaan Kohli do nothing much even when they realise Anupam Kher has brought in an impostor? Neil Nitin Mukesh is completely wasted (There is a stolen Games of Thrones musical cue in a scene that either mocks the poor guy’s recent GoT casting disaster, or may be a symbol of how long the film will be). Armaan Kohli plays a one dimensional villain, who is as menacing as the teddy bear my niece plays with! Also the number of times every character says the word Dilwale, it looks like, Salman Khan is giving free publicity to his current ‘best’ friend, Shah Rukh Khan and his upcoming film!
current ‘best’ friend, Shah Rukh Khan and his upcoming film!

    What to do

Sooraj Barjatya should never be blamed for believing in the goodness of the nineties and incorporating it in today’s cinema. But what needs to be blamed is that he still sticks to the old style film-making and expects the audience to accept it. That’s where Prem Ratan Dhan Payo as a film fails. What could have been Salman Khan’s sweetest Diwali gift to his fans turns out to be so depressing that you wait for this festival to get over asap! If you are a true Salman Khan and have patience to bear melodrama for more than 3 hours, go enjoy the challenge!

  • Every critics gave this mahacrap of MILLENIUM hardly 1/2*.while @indicine tried to fool us ,everybody is saying HNY is far better than prdp.

But 3.5 stars for a film like prdp!!!!!,ROFL.

This film is 2nd such film after jai ho disliked by huge audience after 1st show itself.you can imagine that what kind of low class movie it could be.

Along with that there is no chemistry exists between salman and sonam, they look completely obsolete and disgusting jodi ever.and the over melodrama of 90’s will make you even bore and will force you to left the theatre in the interval itself.

It is a completely a non youth based movie and they’re trying to bring family audience in the name of family story.but believe me even family member will also will spot on this movie ,such type of disgusting movie it is.

It’s nothing but a biggest torture for family members.and for youths,my suggestion will be if you want to suicide then go to theatre to watch this mahacrap of MILLENIUM,if still you want to suicide I’ll not force you stay awake from this mahacrap and family will realise after spending a huge money and precious time after watching this well made trapping 90’s expired crapfest.so decission is all in your hands whether you want to remain in safe from torture as well as from wasting money, then stay awake from this mahacrap of the millenium.
