Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (PRDP) Movie Review

Sooraj Barjatiya and Salman Khan have teamed up together thrice before and the first two times they came together, they created unparalled box office history with ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ and ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’. And they delivered the highest grosser of 1999 in the form of ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’.

So when Barjatiya and Salman reunite after 17 long years during the superstar’s best ever phase, expectations are sure to be raised high. But the trailers have promised a typical Rajshri film which may not hold a lot of value for the youth. However, if they do manage to bring the families to the theatres, PRDP can still make history. So how is the movie? Let’s find out!

Story: Vijay Singh (Salman) is the soon to be king of Pitampur but his brother Ajay Singh (Neil Nitin Mukesh) with the help of the estate’s manager Chirag Singh (Armaan Kohli) try to kill Vijay but he somehow survives. The Raj Dewan (Anupam Kher) who loves Vijay finds his lookalike Prem Dilwale (Salman again) to fill in for Vijay for the Rajtilak ceremony. Prem is diametrically opposite that of Vijay and is playful and innocent and manages to win over everyone, even Rajkumari Maithili (Sonam) who is supposed to get married to Vijay. Prem even mends the relationship of Vijay with his sisters Chandrika and Radhika. But what happens when Vijay gets fine? What happens to Ajay and Chirag? Who does Maithili end up with? To find out, watch the movie!

Prem Ratan Dhan Payo Movie Review

Screenplay and Direction: The first half of PRDP flows freely and the story moves along nicely whilst establishing the characters. The biggest problem with the movie is that the conflict doesn’t seem to be too big for it to matter later on when the conflict gets solved. However, we don’t mind this because Prem Dilwale’s innocent antics keep the film flowing and the audiences will like Salman’s act. The football match sequence and the sequence where Prem mends the relationship of Vijay with his step-sisters are the standout sequences. There are a fair few illogicalities too like the placement of a palace on the edge of a waterfall. At the end of the 160 minute duration, PRDP manages to make everyone smile and the emotions end up working which should in turn make the film work amongst the family audiences.

PRDP looks opulent and grand, and clearly a lot of money has been spent on the sets and the costumes. The production design is of high standards. The VFX work isn’t the best you have seen in Hindi films and the editing could have been tighter too but as we all know, Sooraj Barjatya believes in excesses.

Music: Himesh Reshammiya doesn’t deliver a chartbuster soundtrack but thankfully the placement of the songs are just about perfect and the music sounds a lot better in the movie. The songs which stay with the viewer are Jalte Diye, Halo Re, Prem Leela. And the biggest earworm of the season is the title track which seems to be everywhere. Himesh should have gotten someone like Sonu Nigam to sing the emotionally charged Bachpan Kahaan song. Also, the movie could have done with 2 fewer songs in the first half.

Acting: Salman Khan is Prem and he doesn’t put a step wrong throughout the film. He carries forward his style of acting and plays a variant of the character he has mastered by now. The innocent, bhola bhala North Indian who speaks with a smile, and he aces it yet again. Unfortunately, he isn’t too convincing as the King Vijay Singh. Sonam Kapoor was compared to Madhuri Dixit during the promotions but she doesn’t even come close to Sonali Bendre’s act in Hum Saath Saath Hain. The character of Maithili was crying out loud for a bigger star and a much better actor. Neil Nitin Mukesh does a good job as the evil brother who has a change of heart, but doesn’t have much to do in the film. Swara Bhaskar is dependably good but she doesn’t have a lot of scenes. Armaan Kohli is a major put off, his character and styling does tend to remind the audience of the horrendous ‘Jaani Dushman’. Anupam Kher is very good and portrays the Raj Dewan perfectly. Deepak Dobriyal is not allowed to fulfil his potential which we recently saw in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’, but he does justice with whatever he gets.

Conclusion: Prem Ratan Dhan Payo should be judged as an independent movie and not compared with classics like ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ and ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’. The film thoroughly entertains with very few dull moments if you can immerse yourself into the world of the movie. Sure there are a few silly and illogical moments but the innocence and the ‘sanskaar’ of the plot keeps the film together. And Salman Khan puts in a stellar performance as Prem Dilwala. In the first half of the film, he wins you over time and again, with a performance that could be better than his innocent act in ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’

Diwali is the time when families come together and PRDP will be lapped up by families as it is a joyous movie which spreads smiles with its goodness. This festive season, give Prem Dilwala’s PRDP a try.

Pros:

  • Salman Khan is in top form as Prem Dilwale
  • The production design and costume design is of high standard
  • Impressive acts by Anupam Kher, Swara Bhaskar, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepak Dobriyal
  • Music goes well with the film
  • The goodness of the movie takes us back to the Rajshri world of goodness

Cons:

  • The chemistry between Salman and Sonam doesn’t work. It’s unfair to compare her to Madhuri, but a Barjatya film deserved a better leading lady.
  • Armaan Kohli fails to make an impact, he has a meatier role than Neil Nitin Mukesh!
  • The second half is slow-paced. The silly and illogical moments could make it hard for the youth to love it
  • The editing should have been tighter
Rating: ★★★★☆

It’s a 3.5 star movie to be honest, but Salman’s Prem Dilwala act and the fact that we don’t get to see such films in today’s times, gets it half a star more. Sooraj Barjatya films come once in 6-7 years and there is no director in the industry who can fill a film with as much goodness, sweetness and indian tradition as much as the legendary director can.

Advice for the youth. Watch the film with your family and not your friends, as PRDP is best enjoyed with your entire family. Your granny will love it, your parents will smile throughout the film and you’ll enjoy the second half better in their company.

  • Reviews are above average to positive in most of the cases. Though I have not watched it still nor planning to watch it in this weekend, but few of my family friends rushed to the theater for early morning shows and said , its quite enjoyable.
Even many of my facebook friends have posted that it’s a perfect one time watch. So with such positive WOM, 250 cr+ are on the cards.

  • Why 4 star??
That means this crap = BB(one of the best film).
It’s totally cheating with good Indian films.

  • Good review indicine, at least you people have started giving better ratings than your previous reviews. I have not seen the movie but will watch it tomorrow. I want to ask how placement of a palace can be illogical, its their choice where they want to place it. Sonam kapoor cant be compared to madhuri or other rajshri heroines as she has her own charm. Please do make an article comparing bb and prdp collections, it would be interesting. I think salman has another nomination this year after bb.

  • roking best movie of the year. .. better then bajrangi … sab record jayega tut ke just wait and watch … he he diwali dhamaka….

  • Great. .

    HAPPY NEW YEAR … ★★★★ (4★)
    PRDP ….. 3.5★

Still PRDP is Far Far Far Best Film than Crappiest Film of 2014 .. HAPPY NEW YEAR

  • Briliant review by indicine..
I personally think the movie will go upto 250 cr mark or may be 300 but it will not pass bb/pk record. Anyway we love rajshri movies and its a must watch with family.

  • Not because of any hatred but on a serious note. All of those who watched this movie (and I am talking about real-time movie goers and not some critic etc) have one thing common to say, that “You will enjoy this movie at the fullest when you go with your family”. It’s not a suitable choice for those , who go with a big gang of friends or those who prefer to watch the movie with their boyfriend/girlfriend/partner. So its remain to be seen, whether it turns out a positive or negative aspect of PRDP.

  • i think it will be the biggest disappointment of 2015

really I love salman and his movie bajrangi bhaijaan, outstanding movie , but prdp is worst, I think this is release in before 2000 , that will be blockbuster, but now this will not work, I watched prdp from kerala calicut crown theatre there received badly mixed, and theater is not youth audience , full of families, and some people replied the film is a serial of 6 episodes.

climax sallu fight is outstanding I am very entertaining, but really movie is very bad for youth.. yesterday I watched Tamil movie vedalam that was not good but very entertaining, mass
feeling.. I loved salman khan mass movies.. he is very bad in romantic role

  • there is negative wom abt flim by audience and critics but indicine gave 4 star to come in the above movies trailer from now as they only show highest star rating…..good strategy indicine to come in jai ho 2 trailer book

  • im from kerala
here no one understand the release of prdp
    total screen is 50 screens
but hny released in 120 screens
most multiplex showing prdp is 2,3 per show a
    day
    response from kerala is mixed
and Tamil nadu dubbed version is very poor
Telugu also very poor, salman tried to ram
chairman voice to promote the films , but
    received very badly…

  • djbolly you seem to be srk’s fan. You people dont have anything to do other than criticising other films. srk fanbase is the worst which i have observed. waiting for Christmas to show you people your place

  • The review sounds too much sugarcoating, stop giving excuses like watch with your families or grany will love it,don’t watch with your friends.Too many readers depend on your reviews so say it as its and stop trying to please everyone. Honesty is the best policy. These is the same thing you did with hny, entertainment and sing is bling.you gave action jaction 0 sta

  • Haha rofl….!!…

Youth hv lapped up this movie…!!..

    Good signs for box office…!!…

Youth should lap up good masala n massy cinema…!!… N reject crap repetitive fooling rom-com lyk tamasha…!!…

Good old days r back !!.. Mass cinema is back….!!!…

  • I knew that sonam is not good choice . i hate this actress. you should pick Dipika padukon or any other good actress . sonam is just average films actresss ….

  • to be honest hahk and hssh had dull moments too but overall it is a classic and its the same with prdp
its little bit unfair to compare sonam with madhuri dixit because salman said too that you have to say those things while promoting a film and that madhuri will know who is better
and indicine is right watch it with your relatives like you did with hahk hssh and mpk.

  • Great. watching the movie in theater film is superb ND different dnt listen to some jealous idiots enjoy the movie
