Peepli Live rejected by Oscar Academy

With just 38 days to go for the 83rd Oscars, India’s only hope of making it to the foreign language category – the Aamir Khan production Peepli Live – has been rejected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The 9 film shortlist was out today and much to India’s and Aamir Khan’s disappointment, the Anusha Rizvi directed film found no mention. The list will further be cut down to just 5 films that will be a part of the official Oscar nominations.

A disappointed Aamir said “I came to know that Peepli Live is out of Oscars. I am of course sad about it. But I am happy that we represented India and we were one among the world’s best 60 films which were sent to Oscars. We are disappointed and sad.”

The film that talks about the inequality and differences between rural and urban India, is a critically acclaimed film in India that also did well at the box office.

Peepli Live was chosen ahead of films like Raajneeti and Udaan as India’s official entry for the Oscars.
