New releases fail, all eyes on Akshay Kumar’s Holiday

Two films released last week, Citylights and Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi, both failed to make much impact at the domestic box office. Vishesh Films’ Citylight has collected around 4 crore in 4 days, while Ekta Kapoor’s Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi has collected less than 2 crore.

Heropanti remains the first choice this week too, as the film is heading towards the 50 crore mark.

But all eyes are now on the second biggest release so far this year, Akshay Kumar’s ‘Holiday – A Soldier Is Never Off Duty’. The pre-release reports are fantastic and even if Holiday doesn’t open as well as other ‘Post-IPL’ releases like ‘Rowdy Rathore’ and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, it should do well in the long run.

The trade expected ‘Holiday’ to be marketed on a much larger scale, but the promotions over the last few weeks leading up to its release, has been surprisingly low-key. Akshay has been spotted promoting the film at a couple of different events, the usual television appearances, but nothing extravagant so far. Given the positive pre-release reports (almost everyone who has seen it has loved it), it could only mean that the makers are extremely confident of their product.
