My Name Is Khan Movie Review

We’ve never really been huge fans of Karan Johar films – Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was good, K3G was okay, KANK was terrible. Hence we were slightly cynical about My Name Is Khan.

But the film is special for several reasons; it has one of the biggest stars in the country playing a not-so-perfect character and two, SRK and Kajol return for what could be their last outing together. Do they recreate on-screen magic with MNIK? Read on to find out.

Rizwan Khan (Shahrukh Khan) suffering from Asperger’s syndrome, moves to San Francisco after spending most of his life in Mumbai. Here he comes across Mandira (Kajol), a charming lady who steals his heart away. They get married and start a business together. Everything that’s happy and perfect suddenly turns upside down and turmoil starts creeping into his life after the 9/11 attacks. Muslims, now seen as idols of evil, devastates the life of Rizwan. Confused and upset of loosing his dignity and love, he embarks on a touching journey to win back his love.

What works for My Name Is Khan

  • MNIK is inarguably Karan Johar’s best work to date. Its the simplicity of his narration that works for the film. There are times when certain scenes get over-dramatic, but Karan can be forgiven, simply because he gets it right more often than not.
  • The Asperger’s disorder that Karan’s protagonist suffers from, works big time in favour of the  film as you cheer for Rizwan Khan all through. Its the character’s innocence, charm and niceness that you willingly let your heart go out to him.
  • Aided by the magical chemistry that SRK-Kajol share, the love story works like a dream.
  • The music is good, Tere Naina and Noor-e-Khuda are the best tracks in the album. Karan has sensibly avoided lip synced song and dance routines.
  • The dialogues (Shibani Bathija and Niranjan Iyengar) are effective and funny when its meant to be.
  • Cinematography is excellent. Ravi K Chandran has captured San Fransisco very well.

Scenes to watch out for

  • Almost all scenes involving Rizwan Khan – him selling products, first meets Mandira (Kajol), hospital scene, after the wedding – to name a few, all exceptionally well executed and equally well performed.
  • Scenes following the tragedy.
  • SRK – Kajol romantic portions in the first half are cute.

Some negatives

  • While Karan in MNIK has tried his best to break away from the so-called filmi formula, he does succumb to the temptation on more than one occasion. (More on this later)
  • The climax doesn’t work.
  • The character actors don’t get much scope.

Performances

  • Khan is King and he proves just why with a performance comparable to some of his best – Chak De and Swades. In MNIK, SRK the star is hardly visible, its Rizwan Khan all through. We think, its the greatest compliment you could ever give to an actor.
  • Kajol is fantastic. She effortlessly slips into Mandira, her character and stays there through the film. The chemistry she shares with SRK is electrifying, not that we expected anything less anyway.
  • Child Artistes : Both Tanay Chheda (young Rizwan Khan) and Yuvaan Makaar (Sameer) do well.
  • The rest – Jimmy Shergill, Vinay Pathak, Sonya Jehan, Zarina Wahab – don’t get enough scope.

Overall, My Name Is Khan is an entertaining film that makes you laugh and shed a couple of tears. Its a journey that’s worth the price of your ticket and a bit more.

Rating: ★★★★☆ 3 for the film, 1 for SRK and Kajol, they were brilliant!

  • Salam Hina.
As i m muslim so i loved your review and your way of pointing out negatives which i didn’t read in any review. You are our proud in indicine. V.good job hina there is some star for you *****

  • the weekand gross for mnik is around 66cr worldwide and nett collections are 29.50cr.
3 idiots weekand gross was 93 cr with nett collections of 4o crore.

  • indicine:

waiting for the collection report…only that report can shut the mouth of these people…we r sure that MNIK wil be in the No.1 or NO.2 position in bollywood cinema..

  • Hina,
Do you know one thing ?
this is your best and unbiased review ever.
i am thankgul to you that u put this review on my request , if u didnt post it then we all miss this kind of perfect review.
you watched movie very deeply and which positive and negative points u mentioned all are true.
one thing i want to mention that , we cant keep same feeling every time , like if u are sick then some time u will feel better and some time you will suffer , so same case with Rizvan khan , some times he was fine and normal person and some times he suffers with his disease.
i can say only one word about it .

  • Aditya:

u r saying 29.5, some r saying 65, others r saying 44…stop this imagination my frend… we all r using indicine… so wait for them to put up the report…and abt ghajini i am sure MNIK will breaks its record.. wat to see is whether it wil defeat 3 idiots or not…

  • Vinshal plz calm down dont think ur MNIK will break record of ghajini and 3I is very far nobody can reach(out of station)

  • Amish, u r right name , indicine always gives 1,2 cr extra i think they will give 31 cr , 33 is too much , and when 1st week will 49 cr they will say 52 cr.
    amish 29.5 is enough i think , they can get 6 ,5,4, 4 = 19-20 cr more for rest 4 days
    so 1st week = 50 cr
    2nd week = 20 cr
    3rd week 8 cr
    4th week 2 cr
    lige time 85-90 cr
    what do u think ????

  • @ Nauman- Dont think it will make 85-90cr.. at max 75-80cr. The repeat value is way 2 low for MNIK so movie can be a hit n may be superhit/BB overseas..:)

And regarding media they may even make d collection 100-200cr dependin on hw much they r paid..;)

SRK already shoutin d movie s a hit superhit bla bla…;) so u can imagine hw d media s gonna give d collections..;)

  • @Hina Nice review but i little bit disappointed coz i was not expecting such praise of this movie.Dont you think initially viewer just fedup in 1st half.

  • Now its clear that it will be sure shot flop .

IBOS network says that mondays collections are crashed half of fridays collections .

I earlilier says that if film is good then it will be steady on monday . This crash proves that all TV chanells are fake & also critics are fake given 4, 5 stars . But audience gives thumbs down to the film on monday .
All tv channels & media are playing with publics sentiments . Shame on TV channels & media They are all paid & bias . Shame on srk & kjo for such a cheap publicity.

  • @Shivan i agree realy damn boring movie.Dont know why media just so much supporting and promoting this movie. One interesting thing Taran (Zoom tv) and Bollywoodhungama are official partner of MNIK.Thats why they promoting this movie.

Box Office: Kurban 2. MNIK embarks on a Monday crash pattern, set to flop
    Monday, February 15, 2010

As expected, boosted by the Pakistani/mideast populations, My Name is Khan got the initial response overseas but not Hollywood-challenging to the tune of $1.8 mil in USA in gross where they are incidentally celebrating the President’s day weekend. But more importantly, the post-release reports neither there in America nor especially in the mainland India are painting a good sign for the Shahrukh Khan-Kajol film in the days to come.

Across the country, the post-release reports are flat out mixed to very poor, belying the 5 and occassionally even 5.5 star scale-exceeding ratings that were relayed ahead of the release in Indian media. This incidentally had happened with Kurbaan too. Quite the contrary are the public reports of this movie.

Infact when it’s all said and done, Karan Johar and Shahrukh Khan may actually thank Shiv Sena for creating enough controversy for the film to manage a respectable collection in the opening weekend in the metros atleast.

Because the actual box office pattern for MNIK in India went like this:

  • @Zeeshan …Thnx 4 the compliment.I just said whts right n whts wrong nothing else. Many ppl on this page have gon far far away 4m reality while reviewing.I just kept everything smooth n neutral :) Although it was bit boring I agree.

  • shame on muslims which like this cramp movie said no difference between hindu and muslims. This movie totally against islamic concepts and promoting to finish religion values. For god sake muslims dont watch this movie in which totally mentioned muslim can do marry with hindu.

Please boycott this cramp (SRK (dont know weather muslim or not)) and his movies. In quran it mentioned clearly muslims which will support such act also out of this one and only true religion.

  • @Hina nice you are right.@Fiza your few points really very solid and genuine.Through film somehow trying to abolish religion values which we ignore during watching movie but somewhere present in mind.Slow mind changing process.

On Friday the film could not release as planned in Maharashtra, North Karnataka, parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Orissa and even a couple places in Delhi-UP. It lost out in major centers like Pune, Nasik altogether. In Mumbai, India’s biggest center where it was to release on over 105 theaters, when it released on afternoon shows it was in only handful of multiplexes (Fun republic etc.), MNIK took to to 70-75% occupancies which was below expectation considering the media frenzy. In the interiors as reported occupancies were dismal, in the tune of 25-30% (even lesser in many cases).

On Saturday, the film did release in about 49 halls in Mumbai and in afternoon in Pune, this continued through Saturday evening till the terror blasts shook Pune putting Pune back to square one. Nonetheless Saturday and Sunday saw pickups for the film recording 80-95% collections in majority of multiplexes across the board which is quite good.

But after the curiosity triggered by the various controversies, the merits of the film as a box office power have to take over, and this is where the Karan Johar-Shahrukh Khan-Kajol film is unable to stand the test. The cracks for the film started around Sunday night shows, even as most of Sunday was advance booked on Saturday itself.

But Monday tends to be a make or break situation for any film, regardless of controversy or not. The worst fear for MNIK apart from the tensions of Friday would have been the much feared Monday crash, and unfortunately for the actor now, that is indeed happening as Monday morning opened nationally to poor to dismal response compared to Friday which wasn’t all that to begin with, and advance for Monday night is not showing much hope. In some multiplexes where Sunday went 85-90%. Monday is looking to end up doing just 8-9% (multiplexes, not single screens). On the other hand, Chandan cinema, a single screener in Mumbai for example maybe lucky to get 50 tickets sold against its capacity of around 1000 on Monday shows.

The situation is somewhat better in Hyderabad and Delhi which has a sizeable muslim population but it may not hold there either as in the nearby regions have gone down. Same in Jaipur, Kanpur, Ahmedabad etc.

The Karan Johar film never had much of a chance in the interiors of India and can already be dubbed a flop there. At this point, the 100 crore Fox Star Studios venture which has been billed as followup to Slumdog Millionaire, needs over 250+ crore gross revenues; but it is going to end up coming up short and lose by a long distance.
