Most successful Bollywood Actors: 2000 – 2009

This is a question that gets asked quite frequently in the weekly ‘Ask Indicine’ Question and Answer session. So to end the debate once and for all, we analyse the Top 6 most successful actors in the last decade.

Most number of films:

  • Akshay Kumar – 42 films
  • Ajay Devgn – 39 films
  • Salman Khan – 32 films
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 21 films
  • Hrithik Roshan – 14 films
  • Aamir Khan – 9 films

Total Net Collections for each actor between 2000 – 2009:

  • Akshay Kumar - 983 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan - 678 crore
  • Aamir Khan - 585 crore
  • Salman Khan - 581 crore
  • Ajay Devgn - 557 crore
  • Hrithik Roshan - 481 crore

Average net box office collections per film between 2000 – 2009

  • Aamir Khan – 65 crore
  • Hrithik Roshan - 34.35 crore
  • Shah Rukh Khan - 32.29 crore
  • Akshay Kumar - 23.40 crore
  • Salman Khan - 18.15 crore
  • Ajay Devgn – 14.28 crore

Success Ratio i.e Above Average or better  (probably the most important, because it’s the percentage of films that recovered investment)

  • Aamir Khan – 78%
  • Shah Rukh Khan - 67%
  • Hrithik Roshan - 43%
  • Akshay Kumar - 36%
  • Salman Khan – 31%
  • Ajay Devgn - 13%

Hit Ratio i.e Hit or Better

  • Aamir Khan – 67%
  • Shah Rukh Khan – 57%
  • Hrithik Roshan - 43%
  • Akshay Kumar - 26%
  • Salman Khan – 19%
  • Ajay Devgn - 10%

In conclusion, when it comes to Top 3 actors of the previous decade, it’s between Aamir, SRK, Hrithik and Akshay.

Shah Rukh maintained a very high success and hit ratio throughout the decade, even though he has featured in more than twice the number of films as Aamir.

Aamir’s stature and box office total grew quite significantly towards the end of the decade because of films like Ghajini and 3 Idiots. He didn’t have a release for four years between Dil Chahta Hai (August 2001) and Mangal Pandey (August 2005).

Salman was inconsistent, many of his films were huge disasters. As a solo star, he didn’t have much to show apart from a few films like No Entry, Partner, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and Wanted.

Akshay enjoyed the best phase of his career in 2006 and 2007, when he delivered several back-to-back hit films. He tops the ‘total net collections’ for the decade. His average per film and success ratio isn’t too bad either.

Hrithik Roshan went through a career low after a stellar start to his career, but made a comeback and remained consistent after Koi Mil Gaya.

Ajay Devgn was poor throughout. Both his success and hit ratio were well below 15%. His hits were Bhoot, Masti, Golmaal and Golmaal Returns.

  • Akki came close as many as 3 times in delivering HGOTY 2004 , 2005 , 2007
But sadly luck didn’t favoured him as compared to others….
    (Also in 1994 with Mohra)

  • so our Eid made mahacrap star was even behind newcomer Ranbir Kapoor in his bad phase :D
whereas King of bollybood SRK is still in top 3 in his bad phase
even my friends say that “Wanted se pehle kya tha salman” but these taklutards compare him with King Khan :D

  • Oh shit how can I be so late on such important article !!!!
Listen everyone here I gonna show u all who was the king in 1990s and 2000s.
    1. Srk gave two all time blockbuster in 1990 ( DDLJ and kkhh )
    2. Salman gave one all time blockbuster ( hum aapk Hai kaun )
    3. Aamir khan gave one atbb raja hindustani .
I ignore deewana, Baazigar, Darr, dtph and karan arjun.
    * Who was the king in 1990 – srk
•-In 2000s . Srk gave 5 blockbusters and those are mohebatain, kabhi khushi kabhi gham, cdi , omo and rbdj !!
    • – Salman gave only one blockbuster partner
Aamir gave two blockbusters ghajni and 3idiots.
Who is the king here – of course SRK !!!
    1. In overseas the biggest blockbuster was DDLJ and the record was broken by kkhh then it was broken by kank and then by mnik. Whereas the aamir gave one his biggest blockbuster 3idiots.
As for Salman a ‘big ‘ no .
    1. Aamir, Salman, hrithik, ajay, Amitabh and akki one and all have been defeated by one man in army in clashes. Who is the king here – SRK !!!!
Did u get anything? . I have not included opening wise as srk was and is too way ahead of the rest and as well as in terms of consistency !!!!!!
In this decade it is aamir and Salman because they both get solo releases with 3 open weeks whereas srk is deprived of such criteria !!!!
Lol on aamir and Salman lolllllll ???

  • Aamir throughout his career has made unconventional films successful and other so called stars were doing romantic action masala films which are easy to make a hit.
Making offbeat films hit is what only a true MEGASTAR like AAMIR KHAN can do.

AAMIR KHAN is in a league of his own..no one can compete with him :)

  • @Aishaji, although Ajay was commercially less successful in the last decade, he did some terrific and pathbreaking movies in the same decade.
    Company
    The Legend of Bhagat Singh
    Gangajal
    Apharan
    Raincoat and many others.
That is why I consider him as the most terrific and intense actor in terms of acting prowesss

  • To all akki fans first i love to watch akkis movie but hate u guys listen..
Even each and everybody knows AJ beats Akki 2 times ATB vs Blue G3vsAR
Where the hell is stardom ?
Can Akki be Bhagat Singh like Ajay?
    Sultan Mirza ?
Deewangi and Khaki (neg role) ?
Dilwale Diljale PTHHT HDDCS etc (Romantic)?
    Raincoat, Yuva,MAHH etc (offbeat)?
    Singham,Gangajal,Qyamat,SR, (action)?
    Golmaal Series,ATB,SOS,BB(comedy)?
    Omkara,Rajneeti,Zakhm,Drishyam,OUATIM etc (intense) ?
    I m not here to bash Akki…
Ajay dont have fanbase like Akki and Khans but still he can challange anyone true na ?
U must be praised him that guy with shabby looks is still surviving when there is stars like Ameer SRK Salman..
He tried everything like action, comedy, intense, thriller, negative characters, even he his direct his movies…can you named anybody from industry ?
    Amir is a legend
    SRK selfmade superstar
There is a no word to define Mr Salman Khan even his pathetic movies collect more than 200+cr hats off
Akshay is superstar nowadays he is just making his own league with movies like S26,Baby,Holiday, Airlift, Rustom

I dont care about anyone but Nobody can act like Ajay

    PS-Amir has no competition

  • @Nikhil: After debut, starting 5years of each actor u compare…u go thru akshays box office collection starting 5years n check who has given more flops and disasters ajay gave 5hits 1 superhit…akshay only 2hits one with saif and one with sunil shetty…ur akshay is below sunil shetty

  • Name the bollywood actor who is in industry from 30 years and has just 11 hits in whole career??

  • @XZone, it is so amateurish of you to say that Salman’s stardom is accidental. So, should I say your Kong’s stardom in the last decade was also purely accidental or the result of YRF-Dharma productions. It says how much you hate him.
But your king was more successful than Salman was in the last decade. I don’t deny that. But he is now glory of the past.
After MD and Kaabil, Hrithik will replace him in the 3rd spot.
Let Indicine do an analysis on from 1988 – 1999. You will see who ruled then.

    Aamir Khan The Trend Setter

  • @XZone, Yes, it is an open fact that I dislike SRK. You know that.
But I tried my best to be as accurate as possible.
As of Baghban, Salman’s was crucial although it was small. That’s why I have considered it.
As of Hello, Salman had one song and mainly did the role of narrator. He was never important in the movie.
Likewise, see I didn’t include Dulha Milgaya and few others in the list of SRK films.
And as of Billu, SRK was very important and did all songs in the film. And the film revolves around him too. How can you disregard that. I have never said it was SRK solo film.
If you were in my place, you would not have done the analysis as good as I did. I know how you would have done. So, don’t point out.

  • @KANZ, I did my best to post a good analysis of the career graphs of the two stars from 2000 to 2008 onward.
I am coming up with a detailed analysis of six top actors from 1988 until today. Possibly I will post that after the release of Sultan.

  • I openly challenge that……
IF, and I again say IF, any actor else were in Salman’s place in the last decade, he would have already been vanished from Hindi cinema.
    – Too many controversies surrounding him
    – Legal Cases
    – Media tarnishing his image
    – Betrayals by friends whom once he had helped and thought to be real
    – Doing too many films for family members or friends without thinking much of making films which his fans do expect from him etc etc etc..
    These are not excuses…

    – Few under performances and criticisms, SRK went all out to attack people physically..
    – One intolerant statement controversy has become too much for him to handle.
    – One Kangana controversy, Hrithik has gone nuts on Twitter.. Etc etc

  • @Indicine
according to your data in 90’s
    Salman :
    total movies = 29
    total coll = 375 cr
    avg/movie = 12.93 cr
    total success = 15
    total hits = 13
    10 crore movies = 13
    20 crore movies = 6
    now Srk:
    total movies = 28
    total coll = 326.7 cr
    avg/movie = 11.67 cr
    total success = 11
    total hits = 9
    10 crore movies = 10
    20 crore movies = 4
So SALMAN KHAN dominated 90’s decade
