MUMBAI — Rakesh Roshan’s superhero three-quel “Krrish 3,” starring his son and leading Bollywood hunk Hrithik Roshan, has overtaken “Chennai Express” to emerge as the highest domestic Bollywood grosser of all time.

The “Chennai Express” record did not take very long to break. The film, directed by Rohit Shetty, and starring Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, released during the Eid holiday frame in August and ended its box office run with collections of 2.27 billion rupees ($36.1 million) in India and $19 million overseas.

“Krrish 3” released on Nov. 1 during the Diwali holiday frame and has collected $36.3 million in India and $6.2 million overseas, including $1.9 million in the U.S. and $2 million in the Middle East. The Indian collections include Tamil and Telugu-language dubbed releases.

The highest-grossing Bollywood film worldwide remains Rajkumar Hirani’s 2009 Christmas release “3 Idiots,” which has collected more than $60 million. That film’s star, Aamir Khan, has made the Christmas frame his own over the years with releases during the period including “Taare zameen par,” “Ghajini” and “Talaash,” besides “3 Idiots,” dominating the box office.

The 2013 Christmas season will see the release of another three-quel and India’s first Imax film, the Chicago-set “Dhoom 3,” starring Khan as a master burglar. Threatening “Krrish 3”’s new record, it will be distributed by Yash Raj Films beginning Dec. 20.

  • Another confirmation that K-3 is the highest domestic grosser in India..

Article from “The national”, a leading daily newspaper in middle east.

Krrish 3 overtakes Chennai Express at box office

“Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish 3 has pushed past Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express at the box office to become the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time. Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots (2009), had stayed at the top as the all-time highest grosser for three years with a collection of 202 crore rupees (Dh119 billion). Earlier this year, SRK’s Chennai Express broke that record, raking in 227 crore rupees. Until Saturday, Krrish 3, which came out on November 1, had recorded a collection of 231 crore. – The National staff

  • @ All K3 haters:
Try to accept the truth and the truth is that Krrish 3 has crossed Chennai Express’s lifetime collection domestically but at overseas collection CE is still ahead and seeing the spree it can be said that the overseas collection will remain ahead in this time but it will also be broken one day. Don’t refer to some backdated website like BOI or whatever else which don’t have enough resources to collect pure information all over the country. Due to profit sharing factor no producer will manipulate his actual collection. In this sense Koimoi can be regarded as trustworthy. Records are meant to be broken one day and this is also true for Krrish 3 . There is nothing to be jealous or proud for this

  • hritik need manipulation to beat previous records..hritik fans saying boi undermine krish3 !but thy reported agneepath figures accurately..its opening beat bodyguard reported by boi..thing ranveer and ranbir r bigger stars thn hritik becoz thy dont hav papa roshan!

  • First it was the critics who were blamed for all kind of unfair practices while rating a film. Then, in the last few years it is trade experts who are under the scrutiny. In the last couple of years, the trade figures and producers” figures started differing. In case of films like ”Ek Tha Tiger” and ”Chennai Express”, this difference was less than 10% of the total figure i.e. in region of 8-12 cr nett. But ”Krrish 3” became the center of debate where this difference is in excess of 50 cr nett! Eyebrows were raised and hard core box office followers cried foul. We got numerous messages from our readers asking which one was the right and reliable figure. So, we tried to dig deeper and investigate about the whole circus of reporting the figures and manipulating these to break the records. Distributor Figures Vs Producer”s Figures First, we need to understand about different ways of reporting the collections in Bollywood. There are few like us, who purely go by the producers” figures which is one way of looking the things. We can always compare this with other way of reporting which is the distributor figures. Few sources blindly follow distributors who are scattered all over country, and also under report or over report at times for various reasons. For example, if a film gets a huge overflow, then under reporting is a natural phenomenon i.e. ”Aashiqui 2” and ”Grand Masti”. If a film is a big flop, then a bit of over reporting never hurts. The distributors will get adjustments from producer in the next film, so he will go to any length to make others believe that at least he recovered investment in a film which is actually a flop. Widening Gap Between Figures Bigger the film bigger the difference due to more number of screens. But actually what happened with ”Krrish 3” which caused such a huge difference between numbers of producers and distributors. The whole doubt arises in our mind only when the film entered in the 3rd week. On the 3rd Friday, the film supposedly collected 2.44 cr nett followed by 3.02 cr nett on Saturday and 3.76 cr nett on Sunday – taking the 3rd weekend total to 9.22 cr nett. With only 700 screens, this kind of total is possible only if the film had great occupancy. But if one checks the leading ticket booking portals online, then the situation is almost reverse. It is tough to believe that film collected anything in excess of 7 cr nett. Despite several attempts, no territorial breakdown was made available to us. Things look more doubtful when you look into details. All PR and online marketing of ”Krrish 3” was done by a company which handles Hrithik Roshan and incidentally the most popular trade expert is also associated with the same group online. Now this indication and connection should be good enough for your grey cells. ”Chennai Express” overtook ”3 Idiots” record with some distance, but ”Krrish 3” just surpassed”Chennai Express” records which seems was the most important point. No matter how much you dwell over this, one thing is true that ”Krrish 3” is a huge blockbuster and the film is the biggest hit for Hrithik Roshan. How big is the hit will always remain under cloud and we keep our faith with the makers but to answer that important question – what is the real box office collection of ”Krrish 3”? We have only one answer that truth falls somewhere in between. The film will touch 192-195 cr nett including all versions by end of the run for sure.

  • @ imsrkfan: Hrithik has beaten SRK in only 15 days..SRK ka record to 3 months bhi nahi tik paya.. hrithik is 10 years junior to him but he is beating SRK..SRK should retire now..

The following is a non-definitive list of the all-time highest-grossing Bollywood films, by Real versus nominal value instead for inflation, it tends to favour films in more recent years, with all but two of the films in the top 30 being released after 2000.[16] Films released prior to 1994 do not appear in the list because inflation, population size and ticket purchasing trends make direct comparisons inaccurate. • Lot of people are cat fighting about SRK, Hrithik, Aamir and Salman…truth is they all are unique actors and excel in various departments..it is unfair to compare the actors or their films because the films are also of different genres…with Krrish3 the problem I have seen with most people is that they immediately starts comparing Krrish3 with Hollywood superhero films like Iron Man, Superman, Batman…that is actually ridiculous just because of the fact that the mentioned Hollywood flicks’ budgets are 8-10 times higher than Krrish3…just to take an example Iron Man 3 was made with a budget of $200 million which is roughly Rs.1100 Crores..!!! Where as Krrish3 was made with a budget of around Rs.150 Crores. So atleast people should appreciate the Roshans for delivering a film like Krrish3 with that budget…I am not saying the film is perfect, there are many flaws in the film and the music was a big let down, but I have no doubt that the entertainment value of Krrish3 is awesome and kids are gonna love Krrish without a doubt…my 3.5 year old daughter sat with me throughout the movie without even sleeping a bit (which she normally does for other movies so far) :)

Kudos for the Roshans for making this attempt and adding a new edge to the Indian film industry! :)

    Cheers

  • and 3 Idiots, thus becoming the second highest grosser of all time after Chennai Express.

A website of a news channel claimed: According to trade, the film has entered the Rs200-crore club thanks to its collections in India alone.

Truth? “No,” says a trade analyst who doesn’t wish to be named. The Roshans’ latest film (now running in its third week) has upset Aamir, Shah Rukh and Salman Khan as the trade figures given out are inflated and K3 is being touted the highest domestic Bollywood grosser of all time.

While the fact is that while the figures are correct they are gross figures, not net (like the Khans’ films) and also these figures include earnings from Hindi, Tamil, Telugu versions. While the figures of the three films named are net collections, only Hindi and only national. So if you calculate Krrish 3’s collections that way, the net figure is at Rs183 crore (only in Hindi) and Rs194 all three languages in India till Tuesday.

Says an industry source, “The Roshans were in a hurry to prove that Krrish3 broke all records including Aamir’s 3idiots

(Rs 227 crore). CE remains the all-time highest grosser and also the highest opening day grosser in India.”
