Kaabil and Raees: Inflated Box Office Collections and our estimates!

There comes a time when a strong stand has to be taken against the inflation of box office collections – which has crossed all possible limits with the release of Raees and Kaabil. The theatres are empty but the collections, both films combined, are at record levels for weekdays.

Before we begin, credit should go to Red Chillies and Excel for keeping the collections at reasonable levels throughout the weekend. They probably had no choice but to inflate Monday onwards because the other film would’ve otherwise overtaken them and that would mean negative reports in the mainstream media – which follows official figures. But that’s no excuse for inflation to levels of insanity when the film isn’t even collecting half of what they have quoted.

There’s been plenty of action behind-the-scenes too. A leaked audio clip had a PR instructing her people that the film has to cross a particular number on Monday. The producer of one of the two films had a spat with a leading trade analyst because he did not quote the official figures on his television show. Success has been celebrated multiple times through parties, numerous media interactions claiming victory – even though the final box office numbers of both films wouldn’t do justice to the stardom of both stars.

What’s been most embarrassing for the industry and the trade is the sheer desperation from both sides to spread the word through the media that the two films are bigger successes than they actually are.

From our site’s point of view, exposing the lies and revealing the truth has quite a few negative effects too. We could lose out on visitors, our traffic could drop, because the craze for box office numbers has reached such a stage where people only want to believe the source that quotes the higher number.

But with the producer numbers crossing all limits of sanity, our credibility, which we’ve built over a period of more than 10 years, is at stake. It’s disappointing because we haven’t been able to do what we love to do. We love analysing the trends, predicting the lifetime collections, giving our readers comparisons between different films – unfortunately, inflation of collections has killed our own interest and has also stopped us from posting our daily box office reports.

Some other random thoughts:

  • The Indian box office is immensely difficult to track, especially the single screens / fixed rentals. On a daily basis, almost impossible. Most figures that are put out are estimates based on collections from multiplexes, links to live theatre samples, circuit figures etc.
  • But inflation even happens at the exhibitor (theatre) level and more so at circuit level – depending on which star or film they are siding with. Very few are neutral and even fewer are honest when it comes to these big films. For example, we receive Rajasthan circuit figures from two different people, and both are quoting different figures for each day.
  • The ‘trade source’ which most people quote, has been at it too over the first few days. Not including collections from the dubbed versions is wrong and completely writing off one film on the first day of release itself is unethical, especially in a clash when the reports aren’t as bad a Mohenjo Daro. Also, 5% inflation of one film and 5% deflation (reduction) of the other, can make a massive difference to the final outcome. Which is why we think, if Rakesh Roshan had kept the figures to actual levels, his film would’ve still been at a fairly good total going in to the second weekend.
  • Also, who takes into account the ticket sold in the first weekend through brand promoters? Without taking any name, a huge amount of tickets were sold in bulk at discounted prices to corporates and brand promoters in the first weekend, which helped boost the collections. As per information from industry insiders, this itself is about 10% of the first extended weekend collections.

And finally, we are putting our own estimates for the two films. Believing it or not is your choice, but we’ve put in immense amount of work in the last few days gathering data from multiple sources – verifying and reverifying – before putting it out. We are going to stick to these numbers from now onwards and the lifetime total won’t be the official figures released by the producers.

A lot of questions are now going to come up with regards to the data already existing on our website. Like collections of a Krrish 3 or a Happy New Year, but be rest assured that the next couple of months will be spent in changing the data on the website. Both the collections and verdicts will be changed. Stay tuned for more.

Our estimate, day-wise, for both films below. Do note, we haven’t yet verified collections for 2nd Friday, which has been marked with * symbol.

  • Good article @Indicine
Rakesh Roshan has been inflating collections from day 1 itself, which resulted in Kaabil having 67cr in 1st weekend while actually it was 57cr. And Raees having 93cr, with 26cr lead, which actually was 36cr. The inflation of 10cr within 1st weekend very effective specially when it comes from the smaller film. It can even turn the outcome of the clash, which did happen in this case.
Raees just thrashed Kaabil in the 1st weekend. But thanks to Rakesh Roshan’s calculator the clash looked like more even one.
I think RCE should also have done this from the 2nd day onwards. But better late than never, I am very happy that RCE has finally started doing manipulation in collection after the 1st weekend.
Now if any hater says that Raees has beaten Kaabil with inflated figures, we can proudly show them this figures and say, manipulation k waja se tum log abhi muh dikhane k layek ho. Trade figures me to antim sanskar ho gaya tumlogo ka. Rakesh calculator k jaisa agar 1st day se manipulation karte to socho kya haalat hota.
    Thanks again @Indicine

Bola tha na boxoffice figures inflate mat kiya kar, dhanda damage hota hai.. Ab pata chala kaun hai mai ka laal? kaun hai mai ka laal???

  • @Indicine, in one of your article, you mentioned ” Excellent word of mouth ” for Kaabil. Then where is that level collection? Why so poor collection of Kaabil? You also played biasly in favour of Kaabil.

  • Rakesh Roshan cant manipulate in overseas
Kabils overseas collections now 27Cr it means this movie is not liked by everyone
Same was happened with Krissh3 it had very less overseas collections it proves the truth.

  • I hope in future BOI shows a 200 crores earning movie as 50 crores and Producers show it as 350 crores so that everyone will never give a damn about Box office collections like they used to do!

BTW , I am not convinced with @indicine’s Kaabil figures! 8.5 crores is low.

  • @allSrkians just chill guys we did it again we won another clash King Khan King of Clashes we wanted Raees to hit it has become hit

Just one thing we trust Redchellies figures Srk doesn’t manipulate unlike Rakesh Roshan otherwise Fan would have hit.

  • You have stated that BOI cannot be trusted & it can manipulate as well, like in case of K3 and Kaabil, but when you say Raees makers started to manipulate only after 1st weekend because Kaabil makers forced them to, you are basically defending BOI figures.
There are rumors of SRK striking a deal with a leading box office site to quote producer’s figure for first 5 days. Otherwise, why BOI & RCE figures were same for 5 days, the same BOI who have shown much lesser collections than RCE from JTHJ (2012) days, so there could be some truth into it. There is something fishy about Raees’ first 5 days, but nobody will talk about it due to his power & pull in the media, just like nobody talked about suspicious collections of JTHJ, CE, HNY & Dilwale. He’s the king after all, right?
Also, if you are forced to commit a crime after someone has already committed such crime, then who’s the bigger culprit here? The one who does it first or the one who copies it despite knowing it’s a crime? Or maybe it’s not such a big crime as we are making it out to be? Why are we so obsessed with BO figures at first place?

  • Finally! my wish has come true
I was very angry when hny and krissh3 collection are taken as producers figure
Neither hny did 45 cr on first day nor krishn 3 collected 244 crore

  • what is the effects of raees on srk career
if srk did dangal or bb or pk what would they take at the box office
i haired that the puplic respones for raees is not better than dilwale is this true and what is the reason of this disappointing in the box office collection for raees is raees abad movie and w hat does srk need to make ablockbuster
what is the verdict of raees

can srk beat salman and amir in the rest of his career
what is the effects of the clash between anand-srkmovie and avetar sequal on the movie collection

  • the thing is, nothing can be said & given with a 100% certainty, but i think boi hindi collections +(telugu/tamil) collections is close to the actual real number for any film. therefore almost every sensible srk fan(including myself) knows 44 cr of hny was inflated and actual was 36+regional so close to 39 cr. everyone knows salman is currently ahead of srk in stardom but the reason salmir fans hate srk is that, srk is still ahead of salmir when is comes to all time stardom. srk almost dominated(by domination i mean opening day/weekend collections) salmir from the start till 08/09 & salmir would hav to dominate srk(which they are doing currently) some more years to surpass him in all time rankings. thats why srk is still #1 in boi all time rankings. with that said, srk is still in #3 spot currently even though he is getting dominated by salmir but salman was not in the 3rd spot during 00’s decade as akshay/hritik were ahead of him perhaps that is holding him back in all time rankings. and all this is domestic stardom only overseas & worldwide is a whole different thing.

  • Please don’t tell me Dangal collection too fake. But wait… Aamir is a non hypocrite and genuine in his open remarks. That’s why he always says that he’s not too keen on box office numbers. If you guys don’t believe go and see his interviews. He’s just a cinema lover. It wouldn’t be fake coz we no the number of foot falls make justice to the collection. Salute you Aamir Sir!!!

  • @tiger The Real King

My brother honestly I appreciate your support n as always I just love each n every comment of yours…!

    Keep rocking my brother

  • @10:41pm Tiger

    Hahaha

You mentioned Baba Gurmeet alongside those other manipulators Pluto Boy n Papa Jadoo but in all seriousness The Wrong Number Giving Babaji Gurmeet is a SAINT compared to those notorious fraudsters…!

  • Way to go Indicine! This is always the first site i visit to check any box office news, and now that you’ll be correcting the previous inflated figures of some movies, i believe more in your authenticity, some sites would never risk to reveal the actual figures, we all know them, well done!

  • In the article it was noted that ‘theatres are nearly empty’ so the Q is despite the clash where are the billions of Paglapurians hiding…?

    Lol

In first wknd the media said demand was greater than supply but since weekdays the supply is clearly there but all of a sudden the demand from Pluto Boys fans is non-existent…! Lol

  • Sorry my bad, slight correction to my previous comment- article notes that ‘the theatres are empty’ not ‘nearly empty’ so again I must ask the Q where is the so called famous arguement from first wknd about “demand exceeding supply of shows” ie where are those billions of jobless homeless senseless fans hiding…?

  • @Indicine, plz make an article on the high number of recent bollywood songs that have crossed 100 mill views on youtube..I have found a common link between most of them and that is none other than Badshah!!!
Every song he touches turns to gold

  • I simply love how even though SRK fans have accepted that SRK manupilated the collections, they still think he hasn’t done anything wrong..LOL
2 wrongs does not make a right
Even Rakesh Roshan can say tomorrow that he only inflated collections so that he gets the screens he deserved..
This is not justifiable in both cases..
If hrithik has commited murder, SRK too has done the same..

  • According to my calculations, Raees manupilation is 13 Crores and Kabil manipulation is 20 Crore..Difference only is 7 Crore..SO no matter who started this dirty war of manipulation, Raees is catching up fast with Kabil..

  • SRK movies always come with inflated figures…..IFITS 50 CRORE,,THY SHOW IT 100 CRORE.he hs given most rubbsh movies in high budget….THEY RE ALL ACTATUALLY FLOP,,,,HW HIMSELF ACCEPTED AND GIVEN MONEY BACK TO DISTRIBUTORS.

  • Roshans have make that dirtiest and ugliest…even they gone ahead by ajay devgan…kaabil can easily averting clash as SRK during SULTAN but chip SALMIR wont understand that and think other way…Roshans show gross figures instead of nett collection…

    BOI VS INDICINE…FOR RAEES

  • Good Article by indicine.
    The fans have just exploded!
How jobless are you people! Its the producer who is earning or losing…how does it affect you, the fans!? Don’t respond by quoting “Star nahi hai vo, Duniya hai meri”
At the end of the day, they are just actors providing us entertainment by charging us a premium. Just watch the movie, read indicine articles and chill out!
PS: Trade figure is a figment of the imagination of those who can’t be part of the industry as a working entity and thus try to gain relevance by posing statistics to seem important. Stick to figures by producers as they are the only ones knowing the true collections. Or if you are that obsessed then check the IT returns form of production houses by filing a RTI. That will give you the exact collections. So chill out and remember, they are just actors.

FOR RAEES INDICINE FIGURES ARE LOWER THEN BOI BUT KAABIL HIGHER???

how much indicine try to degrade raees clearly shows by showing lower numbers then BOI…not expacted from indicine…i want Indicine to clear HNY first day collection controversy if u want to restore faith…why have you not taken stand against that as u did bcoz controversy rises due to BOI numbers as 40 turns 39 to 36 approx…and official hindi figures 42…hope u clear it…

  • @indicine we are loosing our faith in these collections!!! Is there any independent solution through which the box office collections would tracked with more parity and transparency!!!! which system is used in Hollywood!!!!! Plzzzz reply indicine
