Jodha Akbar Box Office Collections

Jodha Akbar opened slowly at the Indian Box-office, largely due to the fact that the epic love story had a restricted release at multiplexes across the country, due to disputes between the producers of the movie and multiplex owners.

Saturday, the disputes were settled and the Hrithik Roshan – Aishwarya Rai starrer released all over. The audience response to the movie was very positive and so were the critic reviews which resulted in excellent business for the movie. According to Box Office India, the collections on Saturday were almost double compared to Friday.

The movie is expected to do business worth 16 – 17 crores during the weekend, which is great for a movie of this genre. Remember a historical has never worked in a long time. Even Aamir Khan with Mangal Pandey failed and so did Shahrukh Khan with Asoka.

Can Hrithik do what SRK and Aamir couldn’t? Lets wait and watch!

  • outstanding performance by Hrithik….. he should get chance in hollywood…..he is no doubt the best actor in the world…….this man is the next big thing in bollywood….after Big B….

  • Its a masterpiece no doubt. Must watch for ppl who love historic settings and true romantics. The performances by the lead pair, their hair-rasiing chemistry, direction, attention to detail, its simply splendid and spectacular. Any word in english dictionary falls short to describe the movie. Have watched it thrice and wont mind watching again. It transforms u into a different world, into the historic era. History is amazingly matched with fiction. Kudos to Ashutosh Gawarikar, he rocks. Was never a Hritik fan, but u cant help but fall in love watching him in this movie.. His dialogue delivery, body language, expressions is worth applauding. Ash never looked better than this except for Hum dil de chuke sanam. Her best performance till date. Every scene thrilled me, mesmerized me immensely and gave me goosebumps. Its simply majestic and spectacular. If u havent watched it u r missing something. If ppl who cannot appreciate this movie, they dont really have a taste in movies..!!

  • It was too superb n no one can bring the dignity, poise n gallor to that role of Akbar the way Hrithik did. Its a shame that statues of substancial artists like him n Aamir Khan are not yet in Madam Tussauds! Ashutosh now needs 2 remake Anarkali n Taj Mahal using same cast. The song Maanmohana should have been sung by Lata. That would have made an even better impact. Overally the movie was such a delight I want to watch it again n again!

  • Jodha Akbar, maybe historically wrong. But the acting is ten out of ten. He is a King and yes he has to envade other parts of India to reunite them according to one common goal. and that is for India to be the number one country in the world. According to historians India was the world’s best and richest place under Akbar’s rule. So bush learn to love with no religious boundaries, and see what your nation can do.

The way Ash and Hrithik act together work is better then any other bollywood couple at the moment.
Music is brilliant, and gives a universal message of how love has no boundaries, no matter creed colour or caste. Also how wives are to be given true respect.

And the dual between Hrithik and Ash is way cool.

So go see it only you can see whether you love it or hate, and Rajupts if you really are so upset you should not take other peoples freedom of speach. Now do all us Upites have to go to delhi to watch this film.

    Idiotic polictical people

  • Jodha Akbar is a well directed and well acted movie which lets us to know many points to which there was a misbelief among many people. It is one of the most stupendous film I had seen in recent times. Heads off to Mr Rehman for giving mind blowing music in the film. The direction by Ashutosh Gowarikar was brilliant. The acting performances was good by everyone in the movie but I think the couple who steal the show were Hrithik and Aish, they were awesome in the movie. Aish was looking damn beautiful and Hrithik was just wow. A must watch movie. Full points to Jodha Akbar.

  • SRK, recently made a remark in the filmfare awards that JA was anice film but a bit too long. The guy who played king asoka should know how long these films can be.

Just cos his Asoka flopped even though a good film there is no need for Mr.Ugly Khan’s floppy remarks. Just cos hes on his way out, he has to secumb to such remarks. SRK will never get a role so jealousy sets in and good news then bans of the films have been taken off. Horrah. And all the people who found this film boring must think Welcome is an oscar winner. Uff ho!

  • I was reading the Filmfare Awards review 2007-2008 and came across this very interesting, very insightful comment and I commend Dr Patel for his intellectual manner of putting the truth out there. I am posting it here because I feel it deserves the right kind of exposure. And because he did mention something about Jodha Akbar! The 53rd Filmfare awards was definitely a shame to watch.
Ps: Jodha Akbar was a gem, and a much awaited one. It was like a fresh breath, a break from all the nonsensical so-called “comedies” that have infiltrated the Bollywood scene with a vengence. Hrithik’s acting was A*-class!! He’s just too good an actor. The whole movie gave new meaning to “a wholesome cinematic experience”

Posted comment by Dr R C Patel

“The Filmfare Awards 2008 ceremony was well set up, the stars were well dressed for a change and the stage was not as gaudy as it has been over the past few years. Nevertheless, I feel, via this ceremony Bollywood has hit an all-time low. An industry that boasts of geniuses such as Javed Aktar, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle etc, an industry which was so respected and of which I was in so much awe, has now become a stage for cheap theatrics and open cattiness and downright nastiness. Consider the following:
    1. Put yourself in Ram Gopal Varma’s shoes when Ramesh Sippy was openly presented with a bravery award for being brave enough to watch Ram Gopal Varma’s Aag. So Aag was a disaster, but does that mean that previous wonderful works such as Sarkar, should be forgotten and a senior peer such as Ram Gopal Varma should be made fun of in this manner?
    2. Put yourself in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s shoes for being given the “Come-back” Award since Eklavya came back from the Oscars unrecognised. Therefore beautiful films such as 1942 A Love Story, the Munna Bhai series were worthless? At the Oscars even films like Mother India and Lagaan did not win so were Mehboob Khan and Amir Khan figures of ridicule?
    3. Put yourself in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s shoes. The fun poked at Sawaariya by SRK & SAK was vulgar and downright insulting to such a great filmmaker whose works such as Khamoshi and Black have created film history. You could see that even seniors such as Jeetendra and others sitting in the audience were looking less than amused at this insensitive commentary.
Sure, SRK & SAK covered this up as being part of the humour of the evening but surely such jokes which are at the expense of seniors who have produced wonderful works for our industry, are in VERY POOR TASTE!! Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Has SRK forgotten the awful skeleton in his closet whose name is Paheli?
Whenever the talent of Bollywood stars is considered one always wants to know how many filmfare awards they have won. This means these awards have evolved as a prestigious body by which a performer’s worthiness is measured, so how could such a prestigious body throw aways its cloaks of dignity and responsibility and allow SRK and SAK to carry on with their histtronics and cattiness over most of the function? Truly, I felt ashamed to be an Indian on this particular evening.
    Moreover,
    4. Can we put our hands on our hearts, keep God as our witness and say that SRK’s performance in Chak De India was better than Abhishek’s performance in Guru and Darsheel’s in Taare Zameen Par? Yet SRK carried away the award.
    5. In 2007, the finale award was for Best Film (as it should be) but this year and in all the years in the past that SRK has won, the finale award has been for Best Actor. Why? Why this discrepancy?
    6. Tabu was not even nominated for Best Actress for her wonderful work in Cheeni Kum. However, the critics declared her to be their Best Actress choice. Can we put our hands on our hearts, keep God as our witness and say that Rani Mukherjee was more deserving of a nomination for Lagaa Chunri Mein Daag, than Tabu?
    7. No nominations for Amitabh Bachchan? Eklavya, Cheeni Kum were not as good or even better than Akshay Kumar’s Namaste London? And yet the latter was nominated. No nominations for Jaya Bachchan for Lagaa Chunri Mein Daag?
Nominations and awards MUST be based on MERIT if they are to remain worthwhile. If Amitabh Bachchan did not invite Bollywood industry people to his son’s wedding, that is a PERSONAL issue so how could filmfare deliberately overlook his nomination as well as commission SRK and SAK to come up with a whole skit on stage just so that this issue of not being invited could be driven home?
8.Consistency was missing. Awards for performances in negative and comic roles were just left out with no explanation.

As you all can see I am very passionate about this issue. Truly, this year’s Filmfare Award Ceremony was appalling to say the least. Why doesnt filmfare just invite SRK and his family next year and give him all the awards? After all, we certainly dont want to hear catty comments about the wonderful Jodha Akbar, the excellent Hrithik Roshan and the very dedicated and hardworking Ashutosh Gowarikar, next year.
When one has had the good fortune to become a superstar, one should show gratitude to God by being humble, respecting senior members of the industry, and acknowledging the fact that one is far from perfect and has a lot to learn from one’s peers.
Also Filmfare should be careful about nominations and ensure awards are judged on merit. The masters of ceremony should be dignified and respectful as should the dance performances be. A minute look at how the Oscars are conducted would greatly help.”

I absolutely concur, Dr. Patel. Absolutely.

  • yap … jodhaa akbar sucks … hey you filmy bollywood guys, dont distort historical facts: you show Bhagat Singh engaged to a girl, and we know he was a Bachelor; you show Subhash flirting with a German lady and there’s no mention elsewhere, you show Mangal Pandey with a prostitute ..how sick can you get?? When Americans make a movie about Kennedy or Lincoln or any of their war hero, do they show them in bad light?? Now you show a gift wrapped pair of Azeem-O- Crap-Shahenshaah Akbar with Jodhaa (and that too you guys are not sure ..)..and that too a fairy tale?? Hina Kunwari was forcefully abducted by villian emperor Akbar, as one of his 400 legal wives …. and you call it romance?? I bet Akbar was the inventer of Mujraas and Tawaaif kaa kothhaa … the Din-E-Laahi movement by him was to dilute the religious spirit of Hindus Muslims and Christians ..i think he asa pagan by heart … accepting everything and doing his own crap…
But crazy public all over ..will watch Jodhaa-Akbar …. a spoiled fantasy ..shrouded with the bloods and skulls of thousands of countrymen who fought to remove invaders so that their temples could be secure, their wives and children could be secure, and yes, their Dharma could be secure …
Jallaludin ‘Jallaad’ Akbar still exists in the minds of an average Muslim in India, and stupid Hindus are falling prey…

    Jaaney kyaa hogaa ab???

  • hi amar,
you are absolutely correct. there is no doubt about that if you see this three hour long “master piece” as a purely documentary or projection of real history in celluloid then alas it is fake. but hey, it is not a thing to teach people the history, which is I think is a job of universities or documentaries. it is purely an artwork based on some novel whose characters’ names are “unfortunately”(?) “akbar” and “jodha”. cinema some times tell us the the real story but also sometimes it raise our bar of imagination. ……..and again if you want to portray a real historical personality then you must not be shy to portray the person as human being.if you forget it then you are worshiping ,which is a completely different art…….I don’t think The stature of Subhash Bose decay if somebody imagines on the basis of some debatable information, that once he married. if you do that then you are not showing respect to many more of those married legends.
    Thanks for this topic.

  • hello himadri,

you mistake me … i don’t consider any hero or any character by ideal … but i consider by the role he portrays. i know characters also have flaws – thats normal. i also know cinema will not go by history alone: gowariker himself says his film is 70% imagination – i understand.

but what i’m against is misrepresentation even in the name of Cinema. Can cinema portray Ravan as a Hero and Ram as a villian??: i bet after watching jodha-akbar, my 10 yr old nephew’s gonna google on Jodhaa and this chap Akbar. And he did … and he asked me, well, this Akbar’s not a good person, how comes the movie shows him as a good emperor??

cinema has an influence … u cant watch just for the fun of it ..Akbar was REAL and yes he married and prostituted many Rajput princesses … he had over 4,000 wives …. thats like 1 everyday for continuous 11 yrs!!!! Is such a person capable of portraying Romance?

Entertainment dosent mean showing anything for the sake of it. Gowariker should have gone for a title like Jodhaa- Afzal or Champa-Akbar … and would have told pple that the movie is 100% fiction …

Prijviraj-Samyogita, I would understand. Even Laila-Majnu and Heer-Ranjha, I’d not deny their love … even Salim and Anarkali ..thats OK. But the marriage btw Akbar and Jodhaa (aka Hina Kunwari) was due to a forced alliance btw statesman, abd there is no proof the love truimphed …

The Hindu King Hemchandra Vikramdhitya (after who the New year is named) is portrayed in bad taste like an invader to the Delhi throne, as if Hindu King is invader and the Moghul the rightful owner …

Gowarikers movie is not 100% fiction … of course there is a conclusion to this movie … that Jallaludin ‘JALLAD’ Akbar was one of the best rulers of India, which is utter bullshit!

    I rest the case.

  • Nice picture. Breath taking action. Brilliant perfomance by everybody. It a must watch film for everybody!

  • the movie is awesome nd i think Indian film industry got an actor as Hrithik after amir khan ,hats off to him. kudos to ashutosh what a masterpiece and i think SRK should seriously think what he is doing by acting in om shanti om (i would not say acting), this type of film is ruining the charm of king of bollywood…………….

  • awsome ,blockbuster movie.
    should be entry for oscars-2009
those who don’t watch it they miss it

  • I Think Some Of the people who commented above me dunno the value of Cultre and luv ……
Understand the movie is long … all old film is slow and long …….
This was an awsome movie …
I think u people like all bakwaas movie which dun even have a meaning

  • the chemistry between ash and hrithik is awesome..!they would have had perfect children…!iits truely sad that they have married the wrong people..!

  • Sadly this movie failed to live up to the hype surrounding it. The love between akbar and jodha was not felt on screen simply because you had two actors whose acting ability needs to play catch-up with their looks. When trying to portray a love such as theirs you need strong actors and actresses who will convey this love through their acting eg. kajol, rani, amir khan, akshay khana, etc – i am positive that had these actors portrayed the roles of akbar and jodha the three hours and 20 minutes would have been well spent. Unfortunately ash and hritik failed to capture the essence of the movie – LOVE DOES CONQUER ALL.
Ash and Hritik were chosen for their popularity amongst bollywood moviegoers rather than their talent and this showed clearly in the overall result. Ashtosh clearly needs a lesson in editing because there were many surplass scenes that could have been eliminated and still retain the storyline. As far as scriptwriting goes – a talent that is clearly lacking in many bollywood movies. A weak script = a weak movie and this was JA. Despite the opulence and splendour of the set designs and costumes, it did nothing to create the magic and ambience of the moghul period. Although it would be unfair to compare JA to Mughal-E-Azam, we need to ask why do we still remember MA ; what made this movie so special, so unique. In short the brilliant acting of Madhubala and Dilip Kumar, who strangely enough were not on speaking terms when the movie was made, but not once was this apparent on the screen. If bollywood directors, actresses can try and capture the magic of yesteryear bollywood then i am positive indian cinema will lose the image of “poor copyright” and “unimaginative cinema”

  • Hrithik is far better an obsever than an actor…Thats why he had done such a legacy act in the movie…
i came to see this yesterday finally…because i was suffering from eye problem…and now i can say this is hrithikbest performance other than ‘koi mil gaya’ and ‘dhoom2’…..Those who still were not able to see this movie…Mail at my id i will suggest you the audies..
go and enjoy an epic romance
