The disastrous trend of films failing to recover costs, continued in the month of January 2015. The last two films that have performed well enough to earn ‘HIT’ or better status are PK (Dec 19) and Happy New Year (Oct 24). All other films released in November, December as well as January have failed to interest the audience. Baby is probably the only exception as the film is holding steady in Week 2.
Clearly, the industry is going through its toughest period. Due to increase in ticket prices, the audience is only coming to theatres if a film is worth the price they pay for tickets.
Major releases in January 2015 with box office collections:
Tevar (January 9 2015): After Gunday and 2 States, Arjun Kapoor’s Tevar was expected to take a good start at the box office. The opening was on the lower side for a film that was sold for a premium to Eros International. The film did show decent growth on Sunday, but the drop on Monday sealed its fate. Total collections: 41 crore. Verdict: Flop.
Alone (January 16 2015): Yet another Bipasha Basu horror film released in the 3rd week of January, along with Tamil film ‘I’ and smaller films like Crazy Cukkad Family and Shrafat Gayi Tel Lene. Alone collected Rs 21 crore, the Hindi version of ‘I’ collected 11.25 crore. The other two films didn’t even recover their marketing costs.
Baby (January 23 2015): The pre-release trade expectations from Akshay Kumar’s Baby were humongous. Since the film didn’t find any takers for the price that T-Series quoted, Anil Thadani of A.A Films distributed ‘Baby’ on commission basis. The film took a slow start at the box office, but showed good growth over the weekend. The holiday on Monday for Republic Day did boost business, but the film needed to collect much more than it did. T-Series is likely to lose a few crores on the film, as the satellite rights won’t fetch much (due to genre) and the overseas business will be less than $2.5 million (Rs 15 crore). Overall, Baby is the biggest disappointment of January because the film deserved to gross much more than 100 crore. Expected Total collections – 85 to 90 crore. Verdict – Average.
Dolly Ki Doli (January 23 2015): A well-made film that failed to set the cash registers ringing. We wrote an open letter to Arbaaz Khan on why the trailer and marketing didn’t do justice to a well-made product. Dolly Ki Doli was also affected by the clash with Akshay’s Baby. Total collections – 20 crore. Verdict – Below Average.
Khamoshiyan and Hawaizaada (January 30 2015): The worst was saved for the last. Khamoshiyan did reasonably well with its target audience, but Hawaizaada is the biggest disaster of 2015.

Akshay Kumar : Baby will take time. See it is a two hour 35 minute long film with no songs. It is not a typical commercial film. So it will take time.
Baby is the highest grossing original and non-masala film in January ever. Agneepath was masala and remake with Chikni chameli advantage, which helped it cross 100 crore. Proud of Akshay sir.

pre eid period is not considered too good to release films but last year in the same period v gave a hit like humoty sharma,a film which should hv collected 85cr-90cr if it hadn’t lost screens in 3rd from a huge film like kick
ramleela was made on a huge budget for a film starring a young hero like ranveer but its huge business of 114cr+ mase it still a highly profitable film
so v r used to make best out of worst situations and giving industry hits in off seasons

I agree with you @ Indicine January has been a dull period for Box Office . Baby i think will get the verdict of Above Average or Semi Hit . Tevar proved that people are fed up of masala movies . Alone was never expected to be huge but the budget was low so it could have been Average or Above Average . Khamoshiyan did not had a favourable starcast but the music raised some expectations . Hawaizaada was never expected to be successful . My Father has seen Hawaizaada and he told me the movie is average and it is dragged because of unnecessary love story and songs . But he appreciated the performance of both Ayushmann and Mithun . The last time he also praised Ayushmann for Vicky Donor . February looks like a better month than January because of Shamitabh, Roy, Badlapur and Dum Laga Ke Haisha . Out of these 4 movies i think Shamitabh and Badlapur will be successful . It looks tough for DLKH but if the concept is novel then anything can happen . As for Roy i really can’t say whether it work or not but i don’t think Roy will be successful . and I forgot to mention kai po che in list of youngistaan films overcoming big obstacles to become a memorable success
kai po che was a film starring debutants,didn’t hv any heroine and niche story telling treatment yet the film went on to become a bigger hit than special 26 and baby which also had to suffer from similar obstacles but failed to get anything beyond semi hit and abv avg status respectively
Feb wont be much better but Varuns next is on my list to watch in theatre… Hope for better luck next Jant though…
Last quarter of 2014 barring PK was a total disappointment… Even our King failed to come up with the 300cr storm as prophecised by many trade pundits, paid media and fans inc smartboys like romu kaka, sahir sareewale and our complan boy suresh sukhinath subhramaniac…!

i went to see baby in a multiplex at sunday night show , tikcet price was 180 – its okkk for a critically acclaimed one like baby nd for any big star i dont mind to spend that money but suppose for film like tevar or alone and even khamoshiya they had same price at night show.

We all know certain factors that affected its collections….promotions…no songs..mass oriented etc. Even Neeraj wldnt have expected a massive numbers ..he made d film to show how good and innovative his movies can b…..most important thing is it won d hearts of many..even non Akki fans…d ratings critics and users were high!…so for me its not a dissapointment per say QUALITATIVE WISE but may b u guys mean dissapointment QUANTITATIVE WISE….its an above average-hit movie! Akshay praised never before…Neeraj was given lots of kudos..d new Pakistani actors did well…above all…d collections have been stable..and exceeded its budget.
