Happy New Year beats Jai Ho and Holiday in 4 days

Happy New YearShahrukh Khan’s Diwali release ‘Happy New Year’ has gone past Salman Khan’s ‘Jai Ho’ and Akshay Kumar’s ‘Holiday – A Solider Is Never Off Duty’ in less than 4 days since its theatrical release on October 24. The film has also gone past Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Ra.One and Don 2 to become SRK’s 2nd biggest grosser (behind Chennai Express – 227 cr)

Released on 5000 screens across the country, ‘Happy New Year’ took advantage of the big festive period and collected Rs 44.97 crore on its opening day – which is higher than the lifetime business of several medium budget films released this year – Finding Fanny, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, Hasee Toh Phasee were swept away in under a day.

In two days, the film went past decent grossers like Haider, Main Tera Hero, Heropanti, Humshakals, Entertainment and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.

In its first weekend (3 days), even bigger films like Gunday, 2 States and Ek Villain were surpassed. And now on the 4th day of its release, Salman Khan’s Jai Ho (113 crore) and Akshay Kumar’s Holiday (114 cr) have been beaten.

Talking about the 4th day business of the film, there has been a lot of negativity over the drop on Monday – both in the comments section of our website and on social media websites like Twitter and Facebook. While the trend isn’t great, the Monday collections of Happy New Year is better than Chennai Express (12.72 cr) and Kick (14.41 cr during pre-Eid period) and the second best Monday of 2014 – only behind Bang Bang which collected 15.36 crore on a holiday!

One more stat – the first Monday collections of Happy New Year is higher than the opening day business of Humshakals, 2 States, Holiday and Entertainment, and a little lower than huge openers like Gunday, Ek Villain and Jai Ho!

Clearly, the collections are still good and the film has every chance of crossing the 200 crore mark. A lot would depend on how well it holds in the next two days and what sort of growth it can show in the coming weekend.

  • Waiting for ur next Post.Kick beats HNy …… Less number of screens.less holidays. No big heroine no over the top promotion. tyaar rakhna

  • @JS : Well said bro !!!!!! Jai Ho got zero holidays with B grade production value. It worked solely on Salman’s name. Aamir & Salman have released their movies on Holiday n did 93 crs 113 crs respectively. Let Srk release one movie with zero holidays & see whether he brakes Jai Ho or not. srk last non holiday release was MNIK & it collected 74 crs !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Indicine : If we go by your calculations D3 croosed MNIK in 2.5 days, JTHJ, Ra.One & Don2 in 4 days. Kick crossed MNIK in 3 days & JTHJ, Ra.One & Don2 in 5-6 days with pre Eid release !!!!!!!!!!!

  • Srk crossing 1 Salman movie in 4 days with Diwali release & 44 crs opening whereas Salman crossed 4 Srk movies (MNIK, RA.ONE, JTHJ & DON2) in 5-6 days with Kick with a pre Eid release with 28-29 cr opening !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Mohit : spot on. Perfectly said !!!!!!!! Now I wonder what excuses Srk fans give they called Salman BB streak due to masala movies whereas Srk two back to back masala movies wont be Blockbusters max Super Hit with 190-210 range of collections !!!!!!!!!

  • Happy New Year grossed around 12.25 crore nett on
Monday which is a big drop from its first day which was
a huge national holiday but around 55% from Saturday
nd Sunday which were normal days. The film saw a big
drop in the metros and circuits like East Punjab.
The total after four days is around 109 crore nett and the
film should gross around 135 crore nett for the week
going by its Monday figure but it could be a bit lower as
Gujarat could come down on Wednesday when the
    holidays stop in the circuit.
The Monday figure is pretty good as a number but if we take into
account that Gujarat is holiday and without that it would have been
11 crore nett or less then the trend is not strong. The film will not
become a major blockbuster like a Kick or Chennai Express but
won’t be a Bang bang or Jai Ho as well because the huge weekend
has ensured the film will be on the plus side..
