Flop that deserved to be a box-office Hit?

Why many non-deserving films do well and why some genuinely great films fail, continues to be a mystery.

There have been so many films over the years, that deserved better returns at the box-office and a much better response by the audience of the era. Some were classics that continue to sell on DVDs and VCDs..

Here’s our list of just 3 such films, do submit your very own list in the comments section along with your thoughts on why the movie deserved better.

1) Andaaz Apna Apna – I guess, I have seen this film over a 100 times now and continue to enjoy every single second of this Rajkumar Santoshi classic from the 90s. The chemistry between Aamir and Salman, the twist in the tale when Raveen Tandon reveals the secret, Paresh Rawal’s double role, those dialogues.. Brillliant. If you haven’t seen this film, your missing out on one of the best comic films ever!

2) Socha Na Tha – Jab We Met directed by Imtiaz Ali raked in the moolah at the box-office, but the director’s previous film was equally good, if not better! Brilliant direction, great songs and natural performances by both Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia.

3) Silsila – Arguably Yash Chopra’s best film ever. He makes you feel for the couple in an extra marital relationship, making you believe that the adultery was due to unfortunate circumstances. That in itself is a huge achievement. Add to it the great music with the evergreen Rang Barse being one of my all time favorite songs. Fantastic film, that was rejected outright.

Post your list below.

dude you are living in uk and commenting on Swades…what do u knw about the movie dude…first know about the grassroot conditions on the country then u will understand the speciality of SWADES…It was critically acclaimed..many cricitcs awards were given to it including best actor to SRK..U are living in UK with all the comforts..come to the cillages and see in what conditions they live… SWADES had a very authentic feel to it..not a typical Bollywood Masala Film….It was a superbly ececuted piece of Cinema..One of the Best works of Ashutosh Gowariker till date

  • lakshya :) very good film deservse to be hit and not just average
or maybe asoka :) beoutiful story :)
and i think that andaz apna apna is just great i mean its really a cult hit :) i watch it 8 times it is brilliant
but socha na tha is 2 very good :) silsila i am going to watch it know after reading this :D

  • Some movies like ‘Darr’ (1993) were deserved to be utter flops, but became mega hits. Others include ‘Rang De Basanti’ (2006), ‘Gadar : Ek Prem Katha’ (2001), ‘Biwi No. 1’ (1999), ‘3 Idiots’ (2009), ‘Dabang’ (2010) and ‘Rowdy Rathore’ (2012).

  • ‘Darr’ was a movie which glorified adultery. Look at the climax! Yash Chopra (1932 – 2011) was a great director, but he became impure by committing a sin, that is making a movie which glorifies adultery.

  • Shahrukh Khan’s acting in ‘Darr’ was very bad and his last words in that movie were the proofs of the glorifying of adultery. Adultery is an unforgivable sin. So, glorifying it is also an unforgivable sin.

  • Why such a non-deserving movie like ‘Darr’ became a blockbuster while a really deserving movie like ‘Silsila’ flopped? Both were directed by Yash Chopra, a great director, but by directing ‘Darr’, he became very bad. I think he is dead.

  • I am saying it with a proof. Look at the dialogue by Shahrukh Khan at the last. It’s English translation is shown below:

“Kiran, my life began with your love, and ended with your love. I know that I am your lover, but don’t help me, I love you!!!!”…………

  • I don’t think that ‘Dil Se’ (1998) was a great movie. I hated the theme of the movie and the climax was one of the worst I have ever seen. The death scene of Shahrukh Khan at the climax was one of the most avoidable death scenes I have ever seen. Other death scenes which were avoidable include the deaths of Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Sholay’ (1975), Sunil Shetty in ‘Mohra’ (1994) and Rani Mukherjee in ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998) and ‘Hey Ram’ (2000).

  • 1.) Andaz Apna Apna – this movie doesn’t require accolades from critics, coz it is probably the best comedy movie ever made. The complete cast of the movie did a marvelous job.

2.) Silsila – Intense movie, sheer materialization of the spoiled married life of Amitabh-Jaya at that particular time, proven too hard to digest for Indian audience.

3.) Socha na tha – Watched it on recommendation of my girlfriend ( now wife) in 2007, loved it from bottom of my heart, beautiful movie with pure emotions and subtle acting performance by lead actors.

And apart from it SWADES is Shahrukh khan’s best ever performance(s) where he has not over acted, haven’t tried to show the fake machoism, sincere acting by all the lead actors especially SRK & Gayatri Joshi( gorgeous) and heart-warming dialogues, complemented by the music Maestro A R Rehman.

  • andaaz apna apna ws agreat movie i hv evr seen…n tokng abt gadar dn its based on true inccidnt abt india n pakisthn f8t..its a grt movie..n luv stry 2050 is a horrible choice…felling pity

  • Man! Andaz Apna Apna totally rocked!!! I must have watched it a 100 times too growing up….me & my sis always copied dialogues from it (i.e. you are very jokey!), ek chai scene, and so many others were soooo hilarious!!! It’s always been a hit in my mind!

Just watched Socha Na Tha after awhile on TV just now….& enjoyed it once again, brought an entertaining smile to my face….Abhay Deol is such a unique actor playing unique roles….loved his ek chalis ki last local with Neha! And a few others :)

Silsila, vaguely recall seeing it long long time ago…..but really can’t remember it right now….

But the first two, I am totally with you on that :D Aamir and Salman were brilliant and shared the screen and had great individual stories….actually all the characters were amazing! I always luv with Salman/Karishma were a pair in several movies :) They mention that a sequel may occur….but likely a dream, but if it did….would only want Aamir and Salman to reprise their roles…..Karishma too! he!he!
