FAN was the major release this weekend and the biggest release of year so far. Trade expectations weren’t too high this time around for the Shah Rukh Khan starrer, because FAN was a niche songless thriller. The film was expected to do business in the range of Rs 140 – 150 crore.
FAN opened well at the box office on Friday and critics too gave the film a thumbs up, calling it one of SRK’s best films in a long time. But exhibitors (theatre owners) had a different story to tell. At single-screens, the film took a start but couldn’t sustain. At multiplexes, it was expected to show phenomenal growth on Saturday, that did not happen either. Sunday too, the big jump hasn’t come.
The end result is, the film has found appreciation only with die-hard fans of the superstar. The neutral audience has instead opted to watch ‘The Jungle Book’, which is now matching the collections of FAN at quite a few multiplexes on Sunday.
Coming to the main point of the article, we expect FAN to collect somewhere around Rs 95 crore at the box office. Like Dilwale last year, FAN is a difficult prediction to make too, because the film could still sustain well on Monday and go on to be a decent grosser. But the trend over the weekend doesn’t seem to suggest the film will cross the 100 crore mark. If we don’t get it right, it’ll only be our second incorrect prediction of the year after Fitoor.

@ hrithik at 10:24 pm : There will always be some emotional fans who will go overboard with their predictions. But movies flop only because most audience dont like them and not because of those overboard predictions. Majority of SRK fans including Challa, xZone, etc had reasonable expectations from this movie. Even in PRDPs case some Salman fans had chanted 350 and 300 cr so u think it didnt work coz of those expectations. I dont think so it underperformed mainly because of its content. I do not support fans with exaggerated predictions and dislike it myself and have discouraged it myself but that cant be a reason for movies flopping.
Yes SRKs choice wasnt good in recent times like HNY and Dilwale which is a reason for his underperformance as a superstar. As far as Fan is concerned I am sure SRK did it coz he wanted to do something creative and different. He himself called the movie niche in an interview and said not to expect it to be a big hit. There are some movies which an actor does for the artist in himself knowing that it will be risky at box office like SRK did with Paheli, Swadesh and now in Fan. Unfortunately all underperformed but I wouldnt want him to stop taking those risks and continue playing safe and when he will do something different it can fail too.

Many of Akshay’s super hits are non-holiday releases and some have even passed out very well even during ipl seasons(Housefull and Housefull 2, Gabbar) or world cup season(Namastey London). No big star has released his films during a cricket season till now.
Wowow…that means SRK’s non-holiday FAN (3600 Screens) will just about pass Hrithik’s non-holiday 2011 movie ZNMD (90cr India nett, 1800 screens, half screens of FAN) by around 5 cr if Indicine LBO is right…
Now coming back to FAN, die hard SRK fans can keep on making noise about the acting of SRK and the quality of the movie and blah blah….but the truth of the matter is general public has discarded the movie and it is a fact. if the movie was so special as the SRK fans are claiming it is…then the general public would have made FAN a big hit IRRESPECTIVE OF IPL, JUNGLEBOOK & NORMAL WEEKEND RELEASE. Airlift and Neerja are there as case studies.
Now everyone is blaming IPL, Junglebook and normal weekend release as the reason for the debacle…!! Really SRK fans…?? You guys think these factors can affect a movie that has an actor like SRK in the lead and released in 3600 screens?
So why Jungle Book is not affected by IPL and FAN? Coz it found universal appreciation across the country whereas FAN only found appreciation among die hard SRK fans and paid critics.
In 2000 screens and with 30 cr budjet airlift collected 129 cr if fan collects 95 in 3500 screens with 105 cr budjet thet it is disaster.

Listen, JOKER WAS NEVER PROMOTED by Akshay Kumar or did sonakshi coz Akki was cheated by sirish kunder, the film had shaped out in a complete different way as Sirish promised him to be. Joker was Akki-Sona’s first film, not rowdy Rathore. Joker shud have released in 2011 only but due to non-promotions, it was held for a very long. After Rowdy Rathore mega success, the makers just released it away but it was never promoted, so no one cared about it when it came.
Still opening was 4 Cr and lifetime 21 Cr
Way better than Ajay devgn’s TEZZ which had also released in the same year. Tezz with a multi-starcast and good promotions had opening of just 3 Cr and lifetime of 15 Cr.
No one cares about ajay’s worst film whereas everyone remembers Akshay’s worst film even today.

Veer Zaara vs Aitraaz
Aitraaz didn’t flop. It was a film for a set of restricted audience and at that time Akki was just a star not any bigstar. So the collections of Aitraaz of are totally fair. Even a solo release wud have not made any big difference.

Being Akki fan I wish the film ‘ll cross 100 cr & get hit status. I really enjoyed acting of Srk as Gaurav & as well as Aryan. but as everyone points out about the 2nd half so I don’t want to repeat once again..we don’t want films like HNY CE Dilwale etc etc… but films like Fan ‘ll be remembered for years just for srk’s acting

SRK’s goodwill has over the last few years have taken a huge knocking … give a stupid movie and claim so, there will be people lapping it up but illogical and incongruous screenplays in supposedly intelligent movies from so called ntelligent directors wont ever go down well with public …. u call yourself intelligent and claim to be giving a class and elite movie for the intelligentsia than do so … dont commit the harakiri like u did in Fan’s 2nd half …. u rub the people the wrong way and they will give u a resounding slap on your face like they have given to SRK and FAN
