The writing is on the wall for Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN, as the superstar, who has never delivered a outright flop after Paheli in 2005 – is facing his first rejection in more than a decade.
When a film featuring a top superstar like SRK releases, it comes with a minimum guarantee. In today’s times, the very least you can expect is a 100 crore grosser, but FAN will fall well short of that number and could finish with lifetime domestic business of around 85-90 crore.
The trend is quite similar to Akshay Kumar’s Brothers last year. That film had also collected Rs 52 crore in its first weekend, but held on a little more strongly on Monday with collections of Rs 6.23 crore. Brothers finished with lifetime business of Rs 82 crore.
The reason for the poor performance of the film is hard to comprehend right now, because FAN has been universally rejected. Even Shah Rukh’s West Bengal stronghold has loosened because the film has dropped even at his best circuit – where Dilwale was outstanding for nearly two weeks.
The box office rejection of the film is even more shocking when you consider the fact that FAN is one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year after Neerja and Airlift. Positive reviews from critics has not convinced the audience to go watch the film in theatre.
Like we reported yesterday, the 2nd week collections of ‘The Jungle Book’ are now on par with the first week collections of FAN and some exhibitors have increased the shows of the Hollywood film.
The silver lining for Shah Rukh Khan and FAN is the kind of opening the film took last Friday. The fan-base that he has earned over the years through his films, talent and hard work, will always be with him. But it’s the ‘trust factor’ with the neutral audience that has taken a beating in the last couple of years, and it’s that trust that he needs to earn back.
The actor now needs a good film that will find universal acceptance. A film that not only opens well, but has a long and successful word-of-mouth run. And he needs it as quickly as his next release – Raees.

Srk needs “good” films, while salman can churn out ready, bodyguard, kick, dabangg2 and prdp, and still not need “good” film?
Stopping fooling yourselves, mindless commercial nonsense in the same vain as dilwale and hny would have earned 200 cr for srk.
Indian audience cares more for stardom and the portrayals of stars in movies, rather than good movies. Unless you think dabangg 2 and ready are good movies.

srk was badly trolled by his own fans. He made a film for them and they rewarded him by not watching it and making it a disaster!
I know it is a tough time for Srk & his fans. The problem with Billu 2 was no Irrfan Khan- IMO they should have switched roles from Billu 1 perhaps
Another problem with Pankha was that in most die hard fans eyes/ minds they saw themselves as Kings biggest fans so when King rejected them ALL n instead cast himself as Billu then resentment/ rejection grew within his own base in Paglapur…!
Another arguement can be made that King knew noone within his lunatic asylum base was loyal enough to play his biggest fan hence the crappy collections…! Kings premonition was correct- he just has plastic fans fixated more upon winning useless online polls

@Aisha Don’t want to get into an argument but considering the reviews and accolades the movie received it was expected to do much better.Being a South Indian I know the makers had a superior product in their hands since almost every remake of the movie did well at the BO and were well received by the audience so the low opening the movie took was a disappointment.
Also it would be better if you watch Fan before commenting about the movie because it isn’t espionage thriller by any means.

His name is enough to shatter all records and he has compeltely destroyed srk’s career since 2008 with violent brutal movie called Ghajini. Since then, poor srk is like a tiny ant in front of MRGASTAR AAMIR KHAN. Srk was blabbering many crap things against his Daddy i.e. Megastar AAMIR KHAN, and his DADDY showed him his real place.
