Ever since Dedh Ishqiya released in theatres, we have received a lot of requests from readers for a comparison between Madhuri Dixit’s latest release and Sridevi’s English Vinglish which released in 2012 – both films received critical acclaim, but the latter was way more successful at the box office.
English Vinglish was more commercial and clashed with a small film like Vivek Oberoi’s Kismet Love Paisa Dilli. Dedh Ishqiya on the other hand was a sequel to a fairly successful Ishqiya, but released with a youth-centric multiplex film like Yaariyan – which was promoted very well.

However, the fact that English Vinglish held up much better on Monday with a drop of less than 10% from Friday, helped the film go on to be a ‘HIT’ at the box office. Dedh Ishqiya took a slow start, but couldn’t sustain well enough on Monday (drop was 35% from Friday). Also, English Vinglish almost doubled its collections after its first week.
In the overseas markets, Dedh Ishqiya has collected around 5-6 crore, while English Vinglish was a huge blockbuster with business of $4.7 million (Rs 24.5 crore).

naseerudin shah has had successful films like a wednesday over the last few years and no sridevi wouldn’t do supporting role like madhuri who was missing in many portions of the film, she does films where she is the sole hero

The film is about a woman who is simple, loving and hard working but is not respected by her family because of her lack of English speaking skills. But she overcomes this and comes out as a winner. The subject is supposed to be a popular bollywood flick, and as it was sensibly made it turned out to be one. The story is not original, it is taken from a successful UK TV drama. The film had no risk involved and apart from sridevi’s horrible voice and at times overacting it had no negative thing. The film was loved by critic but did not get as many stars as Dedh Ishqiya.
Now, Dedh Ishqiya is about a woman who is widow, even when her husband was alive she did not quite get his attention. This was finely shown by the brilliant director. Anyway, as a result, the woman changed her sexual preference to homosexuality (though it was kept secret till the end), her maid is actually her partner. It is about female empowerment through sexual preference, a subject of much reservation in India. However, because of Mahduri’s presence and brilliant nuanced acting the film became above average at BO. The Urdu language was another obstacle for many viewers even critic Anupama Chopra has said that she did not understand the Urdu. The film has got outstanding praise from critics. It got many 4 stars and even some 5 stars from various critics, such praise has not been seen lately for an Indian cinema. You could have

Madhuri has 6 major awards and 26 nominations while sridevi has 2 major awards and only 8 nominations (of course only bollywood is considered as Madhuri has only worked there and it is the main industry)
