Ever since Dedh Ishqiya released in theatres, we have received a lot of requests from readers for a comparison between Madhuri Dixit’s latest release and Sridevi’s English Vinglish which released in 2012 – both films received critical acclaim, but the latter was way more successful at the box office.
English Vinglish was more commercial and clashed with a small film like Vivek Oberoi’s Kismet Love Paisa Dilli. Dedh Ishqiya on the other hand was a sequel to a fairly successful Ishqiya, but released with a youth-centric multiplex film like Yaariyan – which was promoted very well.

However, the fact that English Vinglish held up much better on Monday with a drop of less than 10% from Friday, helped the film go on to be a ‘HIT’ at the box office. Dedh Ishqiya took a slow start, but couldn’t sustain well enough on Monday (drop was 35% from Friday). Also, English Vinglish almost doubled its collections after its first week.
In the overseas markets, Dedh Ishqiya has collected around 5-6 crore, while English Vinglish was a huge blockbuster with business of $4.7 million (Rs 24.5 crore).

My fav is Madhuri.but i like sridevi too.
But my all time fav is AISHWARYA RAI.
Also let’s not forget English Vinglish released at a time when OMG had released a week ago and was going very very strong at parallel screens. Also EV had only one clear week coz the very next week, some 8 films were released together including films like Aiyyaa etc. EV withstood competition from all these films and OMG to sustain itself, remain consistent, complete 50 days and earn 40cr and HIT tag. DI on the other hand had two clear weeks and a national holiday and yet could not measure up.
Its good to see even small budget films dont manipulate collections.

@Indicine.. I have different view point while I agree English Vinglish was a superb movie but Dedh ishqiya was just okayish, except for chemistry of Babban and Khalu, I find this film a little flat. While Vidya delivered a stellar performace Madhuri was Irritating. Ishqiya was a master piece Dedh Ishqiya is just okayish.

Sridevi is whole and sole heart of English vinglish. And very nice topic after long time. Sridevi is d most talented and powerful actress of all time. She always worked on trailer made role. Just look at her career since 1989. She worked only in female centric role. English is vinglish is a masterpiece and clean entertain with good message don’t compare dedh ishqiya with English vinglish. And English vinglish had competition from omg. Which was running successfully from earlier week which did 21 cr in its second week and 3rd week 17 cr. it means ev had stiff competition than dedh ishqiya.

EV was a solo whilst DI was a mulstarrer film and a sequel to fairly successful Ishqiya
sridevi’s comeback was tough since she kept a low profile and camback after 15 long years, with a new director, no known supporting cast or franchise, selling point was only sridevi and the script ofcourse, sridevi has had large fan following in overseas, her film nagina was a cult in turkey and russia.
agree EV had stiff competition from akshay kumar’s production OMG, it ate half of EV collection, and had 8 releases in the following week, at 700 screens and 25cr budget was quite high, and it managed to do all its business with those hurdles, the actual all india 1st week collection of EV was 22cr if you add the dubbed version.
EV is winner no doubt, no big names expect sri in ev where Dh is a sequel plus nasir sahab , huma n arsad playing key roles

EV is a diff take new experimental and women centric movie, hence had the biggest risk than Dedh which had India’s top actor Naseer and was a sequel to a successful earlier movie, hence had all the backups with very low risk.

Ev is all time blockbuster in Mysore territory with 5.75 cr which was more big star grossers despite less no of screen. It was one of the biggest opener in USA and UAE in 2012 behind jthj, Talaash and ett. Sridevi has a huge fan following overseas, this was true since her Himmatwala days but after Nagina she became what no any other actress was or still is. People around the world do not consider Sridevi as a heroine. She is a hero to them. When she is in a movie no body cares to ask who is the hero. Sridevi’s presence in a movie is a guarantee for people that the least they will see is a performance that goes near perfection if not totally perfect. And yes here when we say performance we mean ACTING for the whole time of the film not the silly songs and dances that Madhuri & her fans consider!! Those are not called performances by international standards of cinema & art.
I think English Vinglish should have been compared to Aaja Nachle as it was the first comeback of Madhuri that bombed heavily at BO.
Disregarding the quality of the films, people will just not go to see Madhuri for the following reasons:
1- nobody is taking her seriously as an actress. They know all she wants to do is dance on silly songs. She is not a versatile actress. People expect the same meaningless item songs from her.
2- people are extremely bored from watching her and seeing her everywhere, be it on TV shows or ads all the time. This is not working

DT is an off beat film. And off beat film always do less collection if there is no hype.it clashed with yariiyan which had songs like “baarish” , “allah wariyan”, “abcd”,”sunny sunny” .while EV was commercial western and unique film what attracks indian audience .

EV is as an offbeat with message, consider that it was a big risk when you keep a low profile for 15 years and she had to comeback to totally new generation, secondly sri had not hero, all the supporting cast were unheard of, new director and a totally women centric film. she had to fight all those hurdles to succeed. Madhuri on the other hand was doing a sequel to a successful movie, with a list actors, what risk did it involved? regarding fan following i disagree madhuri fans saying she has larger fan following, when you consider she has 0 market down south india, she herself hasn’t delivered a big successful film in overseas without the khans, anyone would laugh her madhuri fans claim that people went to watch Devdas or DTPH for madhuri. whilst there are big fan following of sridevi amongst the turks, who even made a dubbed version of nagina in turkey and russia, lamhe was the first movie to be hit in UK market and she had big name in gulf and she now holds record figures in every market in overseas for female centric film. Madhuri’s fan following outside northern india was mere marketing gimick and hype to compare her with india’s first female superstar.
