Ek Villain First Day Collections: Almost beats Salman Khan’s Jai Ho!

The magic of Mohit Suri, chartbuster music, the presence of Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor and Ritiesh Deshmukh almost did the impossible on its opening day at the box office.

Released on 35-40% lower number of screens as compared to Salman Khan’s Jai Ho, Ek Villain has collected Rs 16-17 crore on its first day at the domestic box office, falling about 5-8% lower than Jai Ho which collected Rs 17.38 crore on its opening day.

Ek Villain was better than Jai Ho at multiplexes and several circuits including Mysore and West Bengal.

Considering the star-cast of the film, the opening is earth-shattering – probably the best ever start for a film starring unestablished stars. Sidharth Malhotra has only appeared in 2 films so far, but is quickly emerging as one of the most promising stars in the industry. Shraddha Kapoor too was only two films old before Ek Villain.

The largest share of credit will, quite obviously, go to the director of Ek Villain.. Mohit Suri, who has delivered several box office hits in the past, but so far wasn’t recognised as one of the top directors in the industry. Ek Villain will put him in the A-list category of directors.

On Saturday, the film has started equally well at most centres, but there could be a slight drop in business as the film was running to 80 / 90 / 100 percent occupancy noon onwards.

Ek Villain should easily beat the first weekend business of Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty, Gunday and 2 States. It would be a massive achievement if it manages to collect more than 20 crore on Sunday – something that no film without the presence of the Top 5 stars (Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor) has managed to do.
