Dil Dhadakne Do Review

Zoya Akhtar burst onto the scene with her fierce and beautifully crafted ‘Luck By Chance’ (2009). Then she followed it up with a solid sophomore effort in the form of ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ (2011), which is still one of the highest grossing Multiplex films of all time. Now, she’s back 4 years after ‘Zindagi..’ with Dil Dhadakne Do and this time she has another star-studded cast, including her brother Farhan Akhtar who has appeared in all her films. Does Dil Dhadakne Do! continue her streak?

Story: The Mehras are on a cruise trip across Europe. Kamal Mehra (Anil Kapoor) is a self made, pompous businessman whose company is on the verge of bankruptcy, Neelam Mehra (Shefali Shah) is his wife and she is used to putting up a happy face in front of everyone to maintain the sanctity of her family. Ayesha (Priyanka), their daughter, is going through a troubled marriage and wants to break out and be independent. Kabir (Ranveer), their laadla son, has been entrusted with the task of taking over their company soon. Things get awry and conventions get challenged when Kabir falls in love with a cruise dancer (Anushka) and Ayesha’s ex boyfriend Sunny Gill (Farhan) returns. The story then moves forwards with the family dynamics of the Mehras reaching a dull climax.

Dil Dhadakne Do Review: Zoya’s distinct flavour for silences and muted characters are again at the forefront here in Dil Dhadakne Do. Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar have basically written an upmarket version of a Barjatya or a Aditya Chopra film where the locations are not Punjab’s fields but the Mediterranean landscapes. It is mildly an entertaining film but the plot is lost when it tries to be something more profound and serious than it really should have been. Also, the moments in the first half linger on for a little too long and the second half isn’t drastically better, either. It drags reaching an unsatisfactory and hurried climatic setup.

Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh - Dil Dhadakne Do

Farhan Akhtar, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Ranveer Singh – Dil Dhadakne Do Movie Review

The technical aspects of Dil Dhadakne Do can’t be faulted. Most of it is sublime. The cinematography is fantastic showcasing the sunny terrain of South Europe and the cruise itself has been setup with elan, making the audience feel like they are a part of it. The production and costume design is top class and the elites in the metro cities will lap it up. The editing should have been nippier but Zoya prefers to make longish films even if they border on the boring category.

The music of Dil Dhadakne Do is average, with most of the songs being pleasant on the ears, but none standing out. Our favourites were the title track, and Pehli Baar. The song which was showcased by Anushka and Priyanka, Girls Like To Swing, didn’t work.

Acting: Dil Dhadakne Do redeems itself a bit because of the acting chops of the cast who are on fine form here. The heart and soul of Dil Dhadakne Do are Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra, who play siblings. Their relationship is what the viewer will take home from the movie. Ranveer is charming, looks good and his comic timing is perfect. Priyanka charts her performance very well transforming Ayesha from a nervous dominated wife to a nervous-yet-independent woman. Anil Kapoor looks stylish and has an evil tinge in his character and plays it to the tee. Shefali Shah plays the upmarket Delhi wife flawlessly. Anushka Sharma should stop doing these sort of roles after being a part of a major Blockbuster like PK and Farhan Akhtar isn’t the most likable guy in the film even though he’s supposed to be the moral compass of Dil Dhadakne Do! The other supporting actors like Vikrant Massey, Parmeet Sethi, Zarina Wahab, Riddhima are alright in their roles. Aamir Khan is the surprise package, he is the voice of Pluto the dog!

Dil Dhadakne Do could have turned out to be a great film had it not chosen to tread the filmsy path of woman empowerment in such a loud manner when it could have done so subtly. The tone should have been hilarious throughout because we would loved to have seen Ranveer’s antics more. Finally, Dil Dhadakne Do is a boring film which doesn’t have a lot of entertainment value for the normal film going audience. But it could be enjoyed by the ones who prefer their movies to be retrospective and slow.

Positives:

  • Performances by Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra and Anil Kapoor
  • Will be liked by those who prefer slow-paced movies
  • Visual treat. Cinematography is top notch

Negatives

  • Limited appeal towards audience outside metro cities
  • Lacks entertainment value
  • If you walk in expecting a film as good as Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, you’ll be disappointed
  • At 2 hours 50 minutes, DDD is way too long!

  • I just read Deepanjana Pal’s review on Firstpost.. Found no similarity at all.. Except comparison with Barjatya movies and appreciation of performances by Priyanka and Ranveer. No big deal really.

  • Indicine I have to say I admire the fact you tell it as it is- a movie that entertains n makes you forget your troubles for afew hrs should rightly be rewarded with a higher rating than a boring film even if technically speaking the boring film is almost perfect but if it lacks entertainment then nobody is gonna watch it let alone remember it…

  • Pity that a british resident doesnt understand meaning of chameleon. The right word is ‘trolling’. Though trolling is not good, its still better than making homophobic personal attacks on ppl and bashing others needlessly, even going ahead calling ppl “predators”

  • Chameleon is talking about trolling but doing it under a fake ID is a cowards way of speaking his mind when real men say what they want to without fear of reprisals….!

  • @gj007.. what is your definition of plagiarism? When two critics are watching the same movie and they both find it similar to a Barjatya movie, is it called plagiarism or an opinion? If entire sentences and paragraphs were copied, I would agree, but here there is nothing similar.

And I guess you are the one who is generalising here. I was talking about a review.. not a movie!

A film like Partner and Barfi is plagiarism. Stealing without credit. But Sarkar isn’t, because it’s an inspired version. A tribute to Godfather. So there is a very thin line when it comes to movies.

Every creative person takes inspiration from somewhere.

  • Plagiarism is acceptable in my book if it improves on the original…. But where it isnt acceptable is if it ruins the legacy of the original like Jadoo Mil Gaya was crap infront of ET or Nipun Lootera was a crappy imitation of Lootera Nipun etc etc

  • As expected … Disaster. The biggest drawback of the movie is ranveer singh, who is in leading role.

  • bt I think ZNMD Was Also A Slow paced Movie ??
& Gallan goodiyan Song Iz Also Very Nysh…!
u hve confused us by your review .

  • kill dill – flop
dill dhadakne do – flop /below average or average at max
bajirao mastani – if it clashes with dilwale then it will be disaster
if it gets a solo release then average at max (considering its budget)

ranveer will go throw low phase like ranbir but ranbir has big movies like rajkumar hirani movie, karan johar movie and a superhero movie opposite alia
So one can safely say ranveer is over untill ADITYA CHOPRA comes to his rescue

  • @gj007
Couldn’t agree with you more. Indicine’s review is out and out based on the negativity that its readers have been spreading for the past many days . They couldn’t give a higher rating bcoz of the flak they would receive from most of them. Also, if you go in and start comparing the movie with the past works of the director, your judgement will be severely affected. This happened with PK.
Most of the indicine reviews are based on what its readers want to see, like giving Happy New Year 4/5 when it didn’t deserve a 1. More SRK fans would like it and their views would increase.

@indicine, grow up or shut this website down. Learn to judge a movie with what it is!

I know this won’t be posted, but at least I sent out a message!

  • @gj007, Woh dekh Raju Hirani satak!!!! My all time favorite of Zoya’s is ZNMD. DDD dvd copy i will buy on Sunday despite 2.5 star reviews of yours because after all Zoya’s movie.

  • Well arrived a bit late to this party, seems like users have had a lot fun and much more than the audience watching DDD in theatre..Thanks for entertaining indicine and its users,I think I laughed much more reading the comments than I would have watching the film..lol

  • Last week, one intellectual said I will never watch Amir movie because Amir favours Salman.
@Navin bro, now on indicine we have 4 chameleons, earlier 3 but now increase chameleons number.
Anyway, @indicine, Any news about Salman’s next movie shooting?

  • @nipun’s future on indicine relies on DDD’s boxoffice performance..Prayers going on in nipun’s home to save DDD from being a disaster ;)

  • @Neeraj:
I DON’T follow those critics BLINDLY. They had disliked films like Highway, but enjoyed them. Similarly, I don’t consider The Lunchbox as the best film of the decade.

I follow them because they are balanced critics unlike indicine who gives many films 3.5-4 stars after pointing out 10 mistakes in a film. Sometimes they become too strict and sometimes too generous.

  • Not only should not so smart critics reviews be skipped but also the views of wannabe critics too should be dismissed without prejudice….

  • The only thing more annoying about a critics review is when it claims his/ her views are STRICT…. I mean what exactly does that mean….? Should we the users now start coming on here n leave a disclaimer stating our views are FUN, Truthful, insane in Complan boys case, treacherous as in kShitij’s case, idiotic in the case of some buddhawale or Not So Smart in nipun kumars case…

  • Best dressed chameleon is Taylor Swift…

    Worst dressed chameleon is Jilu…

Most childish chameleon is Nipun Junior…

Congrats to nipun as he picks up all 3 awards

  • Silly fights is going on.well ,I will watch with in this weekend.because this my last film till august 15,after that I will watch brothers.so I’ll watch it for sure and I will present my ratings soon.

Some peoples made debate on HNY ratings and did blame to indicine.so among those peoples someone are hr fan, some of them amir/salman,some one some akki/ajay etc etc fans.so when indicine gave ratings like 3/3+ ratings to some similar mindless movies like krrish3,dhoom3,pk,gobar is back, kick they appreciated that in a huge and some of them even demanded even higher ratings!!!!!lol.

In my personal opinion, whatever ratings given to HNY that’s not fare,I can accept this even as an SRKIAN.did they can accept the same as their movies mindless and doesn’t deserve those ratings given indicine?????the answer is strictly no.the biggest who comes in those category are salman fans.if you ask any salman fanatics, they will say all bhau movies are great blah blah.bhau did this, bhau did that etc etc…so all have to do it to avoid those mindless habitats.then comes to amir fans who are chanting amir is the class actors, only his movies are made in perfection and rest movies are fake.what perfection they were talking about?????be it’s an alien changed a RELIGION form in some country that also he did choose INDIA.or be it’s a ghost helped a police officer to find a criminal at climax.so I can ask to anybody in this earth,in which REALITY CLASSIC/PERFECTION film, you usually get aliens/ghosts and based on which criteria you can claim like a shameless it as A CLASSIC ????? and rest claimed krrish3 and gobar is back are good movies.at least SRKIANS can agree RA ONE,HNY are not good films but better than all salman films/amir’s craps.compared to all this big star’s films I found JTHJ,DON2 are best films along with best performances and velings to REALITY CLASS (bcause I don’t know any other CLASS films exist kn earth as someone are demanding pk as CLASS movie even though it doesn’t based on REALITY and has too much flaws) being not biased towards anyone.also CE is an average movies like krrish3,ap-2.rest another best performance is HAIDER,I can even include OMG,ZNMD in this category.and I didn’t found any superstar who still gave so called ‘CLASS’ movie till yet.and I can include sp26,baby as mediocre performances.I am saying this by remaining inside the boundary of Bollywood as Indians wants entertainment 1st ,then other thing, lol.

Rest another fans can alleged upon THE SRKIANS why to support HNY,RA ONE.the only answer behind this is everyone is supporting their stars blindly so as WE are doing.that shouldn’t be consider as an issue.at least WE’RE not insecure of anyone’s upcoming CLASS movie and teasing those movies like Pankha/DON3.if your star is not able to do a good movie then shut your mouth and remain silent.but don’t try to degrade anyone whose CLASS is much more higher than your star.

And this is not for those who usually doesn’t have any interest in my comments.and this comments is especially an unbiased comment towards any star.

Still as an actor I /anyone might have in this world wouldn’t have even think salman is a competitor to any ACTOR.this is my most honest message most illiterate / dumb fan base in the world ,that’s salman fans.and this is not an insulted message because it’s THE TRUTH.

@navin,so now I got which types of movies you like! you can want entertainment irrespective of CLASS that what you want to say,but why didn’t you accept you can go to any lower extent to get entertainment even can watch salman’s movies?????

For any critics depended film watchers/sensible critics themselves ,my advise to them if you know how OSCARS chooses a which film and based upon which criteria they are awarding it ,that will help you to polish yourself even more and after it’ll not much difficult to transform yourself as an intelligent critics.if anyone will ask me ,then I will say BEST PERFORMANCE (in main category) along with a BEST/GOOD STORY that must have based upon REALITY (shouldn’t have contain any imaginative scenes) alongside creative as well as incredible CINEMATOGRAPHY and rest factors screenplay, direction also taken into account.so don’t fight, judge a film of your own with out pointing your finger towards anyone’s reviews or blindly supporting any stars.

  • It’s ridiculous to wait for reviews by critics and analysis weather strict critics liked it or not or does their review reached up to the expectations…so…on…

One could decide weather he should watch it or not by seeing the trailer itself…
    Trailer,songs,One or two friend’s recommendations….that’s enough…

btw, it’s not a death and life game to analysis that much….spend 150 or 250 Rs and watch it…that’s all….

  • @sss Bhai tu engineer hai?
Agar tu hai toh teri textbooks kya hindi, urdu, marathi etc me thi kya? English me toh lagti nahi hongi. ??
Kahan se laate ho itna chutiyapa?
Seriously man, I haven’t seen somebody calling becoming an engineer having the crappiest English possible. ?
English TV series and Movies dekha kar, kuch toh improve hogi. ?

  • @Ishaan Gulati, Although I respect your opinion about Indicine, but I have to say that Indicine didn’t give PK a more favourable review than others. Instead it thrashed the second half of the film. They didn’t gave favourable review to 3 Idiots that it deserved. Do you think Indicine Readers wanted to get a less rating review for PK?
I didn’t knew whether Indicine was right at that time, simply because I didn’t watch PK. But after watching PK, I must say, Indicine Review is not up to the mark for me. I liked PK second half too much.

  • @Navin, it has been a fun ride on Indicine so far for you. Keep bashing people with your wit and humour. :D
