The last highest grosser of the year (HGOTY) that did not feature Salman Khan or Aamir Khan in the lead, was Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ back in 2007.
In other words, for the last 8 consecutive years, Aamir or Salman have topped four years each – Ghajini (2008), 3 Idiots (2009), Dabangg (2010), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Dhoom 3 (2013), PK (2014) and Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015)!
With Sultan all set to touch the 300 crore mark, 2016 is likely to be yet another year when the battle will be between the Top 2 superstars for the ‘Highest Grosser of the Year’.
The other big releases of the year have practically no chance – because of clashes or unfavourable release periods – to get anywhere close to the total of ‘Sultan’.
While there is very little to differentiate between Salman and Aamir, there is one interesting point that shows Aamir has held the upper hand in the last few years.
Since 2008, each time Aamir had a release ready for Christmas, he has achieved the following:
- All his films have become the highest grosser of the year
- All his films have gone on to become the highest grosser of all time (a record that has eluded Salman for the last many years, inspite of his super stardom)
- All Aamir films have also crossed a major milestone - Ghajini was the first film to 100 crore, 3 Idiots first to 200, Dhoom 3 was the first to 250 and PK in 2014 became the first to go past 300.
With plenty of open weeks and the best release period of the year – the odds will be in Aamir’s favour once again. However, he doesn’t have a top director like Rajkumar Hirani or a major franchise like Dhoom this time around – much like Ghajini in 2008.
If Dangal tops, the gap between Aamir (6 career HGOTY) and Salman (9 career HGOTY) will reduce to 2. Otherwise, Salman will earn the 10th highest grosser of his career and the gap between him and the rest will be 4 films or more.

We are proud of Salman who was the first Highest Grosser of All Time among his generation actors, a record that took 7 years to be broken.
He holds the record of the Highest All Time Grosser of 21st Century.
Nonetheless, Aamir’s current records deserve huge applauds especially because he holds these records with minimum BO Figures manipulations.

– This doesn’t have enough commercial appeals like Ghajini, 3 Idiots and Dhoom 3, Franchise Factor and Raju Hirani.
– Based on the wrestling theme similar to Sultan
– Aamir Intolerance Controversy
Factors in favor:
– Aamir himself, this man is unpredictable and has perfect sense of script and marketing
– Nitesh Tiwari, whose previous film, – – Chillar Party was a masterpiece that won national award.
– Women Empowerment theme
– XMas with Plenty of Holidays
All in all, I predict 250 Crores plus from it and if it crosses 300 Crores and beats Sultan, that should be phenomenal and awesome.

Odds are not really that much in favour of Aamir Khan..the biggest disadvantage is that the Christmas and new year holiday is falling on Sunday..Sultan had a very favourable release period. the advantage of those two big national holidays will be clearly missing and it will be felt in the long run too but there are two things which can overcome many such disadvantages and they are Aamir Khan’s superstardom and the trust that the movie going audience has in him…more importantly Dangal is his home production ..add to that he is also playing the lead in it..I simply cannot imagine Aamir Khan going wrong with this film…a lot has been discussed about the advantage of a dhoom brand and Raju hirani and I think it’s baseless to keep on reducing these external factors to measure a superstars box office clout..Dhoom brand needed a bigger star than the previous one..and even hirani needed a big superstar to take his own box office achievements a notch higher..let’s not get into a debate, let’s just wait for Christmas and it will be crystal clear to everyone what Aamir Khan can do when he is all alone…
Regarding highest grosser of this year,my bet was, my bet is and my bet will always be an Aamir khan Christmas release simply because he is wise to enough to release a right film at the right time..he won’t release a dhobi ghat or a Talaash during Christmas..Expecting another 300 crore grosser from Mr. Perfectionist in the form of Dangal – My most awaited film of the year..All the best
