Bang Bang Review

In terms of sheer scale and budget, Bang Bang is the biggest release of 2014. The Hrithik Roshan – Katrina Kaif starrer has been in news right from the day it went on floors and the craze for the film peaked with the release of its theatrical teaser. Directed by Siddarth Anand, Bang Bang promises to entertain the audience with action sequences that have never been witnessed in a Bollywood film before. Does the film deliver on its promises? Let’s find out.

Story: Bang Bang begins with the killing of Viren Nanda (Jimmy Shergill). Cut to the next scene, we have the beautiful and single Harleen Sahni (Katrina Kaif) bathing, while her grandmother talks about the stolen Kohinoor diamond. Meanwhile, desperate to find a date, Harleen logs on to Truluvv.com and registers for a date with an unknown person. She bumps into Rajveer Nanda (Hrithik Roshan), who she mistakes to be her date. Bowled over by her beauty, Rajveer charms Harleen and the two fall in love. Or do they? What is their true identity? Watch the movie to find out.

Review: Director Siddharth Anand had everything at his disposal to make a good entertaining film - two of the most popular actors in the country, a humongous budget, a Hollywood action director who has worked on films like ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2’ and also a scriptwriter who last scripted ‘Kahaani’ in Sujoy Ghosh. Unfortunately, the film lacks in two major departments – story and direction. By the end of its 156 minute runtime, the only saving grace for Bang Bang are the action sequences and the charisma, style and dancing skills of Hrithik Roshan.

The first half, which is meant to build the suspense around the character of Rajveer is stretched too long and the director seems to be as clueless as the audience at intermission time. The background score is loud, the action sequences – although brilliantly designed and performed - are way too long and the leading lady of the film only makes things worse.

Things improve in the second half, a few dialogues and action scenes do keep the interest level going and the film does end well. Music is good, but even though the film has just 4 songs, it feels like one too many. The second song in the first half, Uff, seemed out of place and unnecessary. Meherbaan and the title song (closing credits, don’t miss it) are the best songs in the film.

Hrithik Roshan is the heart and soul of Bang Bang, he looks terrific is every scene, acts brilliantly and has the charisma and style to pull off a difficult role. He keeps up his energy level up throughout and gives the film his all. Full marks on commitment and dedication. Sadly, he is let down by his director. Katrina Kaif can’t act. She tries too hard, both to look cute and act. She gets the former right, which explains why she has been successful all these years. This might sound a little too harsh, but the moment she opens her mouth to deliver a dialogue, it makes you cringe. Sorry Kat, you are the hottest leading lady in the industry today, but acting is something that doesn’t come naturally to you. Danny Denzongpa and Javed Jaffrey are wasted. Bang Bang is Hrithik’s show all the way, the rest have very little to do.

Overall, weak direction and screenplay let the film down. The first half is poor, the second half is better. Having said that, Hrithik alone is worth the price of your ticket. He is that good. Two and a half stars for Bang Bang, with the amount of money spent, it should have been so much better than it was!

Reasons to watch the film

  • HRITHIK ROSHAN – he’s outstanding.
  • Action sequences
  • Climax and title song during the close credits

Reasons to give the film a miss

  • Weak directing – huge letdown
  • Poor first half
  • Film put together to showcase action, completely lacking in the story department

Rating: ★★½☆☆

At the box office, the opening is earth-shattering all over. The film will have a good extended weekend at the box office, but the big question is, will it cross the 200 crore mark which it was expected to?

  • @js: yes, i posted my 2 stars review of kick in 4 articles and 2.5 stars review of d3 in 1 article. I will use the same parameter for bang bang also. .

  • I guess watching Haider & Bang Bang on same day is the reason fir this biasedness of many sites…
Watching a movie like Haider will definitely make Critics go crazy over it… And on that very day if you watch Bang Bang.. Then you may feel Negative abt it..
    Haider denting BBs reviews..
    BB denting Haiders BO..

Mind it – Bang Bang totally lives upto its hypes… It delivers what it promised…. Or more than what it promised…

  • bollywoodhungama gave 2 stars to haider – understable as they show affection only to big budget movies with top actors and wanted bang bang to excel so that haider do not pose a challenge
but they gave bang bang 3.5 stars unilke their tradition of giving away 4-5 stars. there is something seriously wrong with bang bang i think. have made an advance booking for tomorrow morning. hope the movie turns out to be good and entertaining.

  • BANG BANG IS GETTING NEGETIVE REVIEWS AND WOM IS MIXED FROM CRICTIC AND AUDIANCE RESPECTIVELY.IS IT BECAUSE OF HYPE OR FILM IS BAD:)

  • Komal nahta reviews BB

Fox Star Studios’ Bang Bang! (UA) is an action-packed love story. Rajveer Nanda (Hrithik Roshan) steals the Kohinoor diamond from London and returns to India. He makes it amply known to underworld don Omar Zafar (Danny Denzongpa), through his (Zafar’s) men, that he has the expensive Kohinoor diamond, the intention being to meet Omar Zafar. Although Rajveer pretends that he wants to sell the diamond, he doesn’t actually sell it, making Omar Zafar’s men follow him for it. Hot on Rajveer’s trail are Omar Zafar’s men on the one hand and the police on the other.

In trying to meet Omar Zafar, Rajveer has to escape, both, the police and Zafar’s men while securing the Kohinoor diamond. Quite early on, he meets Harleen Sahni (Katrina Kaif) in a chance encounter. Harleen, who works as a receptionist in a bank, is on a blind date and mistakes Rajveer for her date. The two hit it off well and start enjoying each other’s company. Harleen, of course, can’t fathom why so many people are after Rajveer and why he keeps gunning down people. Anyway, she learns part of Rajveer’s reality even as their romance blossoms.

And then, Rajveer gets a chance to meet Omar Zafar. What happens thereafter? Why was it so necessary for Rajveer to meet Omar Zafar? Is there some back story? If so, what is it? What is the whole truth about Rajveer? Is he a thief or a noble soul? Does Rajveer and Harleen’s love culminate in marriage?

The film is an official remake of the Hollywood film, Knight And Day. The screenplay for the adapted story is written by Sujoy Ghosh and Suresh Nair. At the outset, it must be said that the story and screenplay offer hardly anything by way of novelty. But frankly, the other things that the film offers are so, repeat, so overpowering that the audience doesn’t even think about the lack of novelty in the subject. Among these ‘other things’ are the presentation, the action and stunts and the dances but more about them later. The screenplay is very fast-paced and keeps the audience engrossed and involved throughout. Yes, the more discerning viewer may question how Rajveer can do just about anything and that too, so easily, but the masses will not even get time to think on those lines. And when the reality of Rajveer is revealed in the end, the questions do get answered to a large extent.

The romance between Rajveer and Harleen is very cute and heartwarming. Actually, the actors playing these two characters are so good-looking that half the job is done with the casting itself – the audience roots for the two, right from the word ‘go’. There are a number of light moments in the first half and they are truly enjoyable. Action takes over in the post-interval portion and that will more than satisfy the masses. Emotions, of course, could have been far more pronounced. Abbas Tyrewala’s dialogues are very nice.

Hrithik Roshan looks like a Greek God. He has taken off his shirt in a number of scenes and his bare torso is to die for. He acts wonderfully, dances excellently and is unbelievably agile in the action sequences. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that he has surpassed himself in the two song-dances. Katrina Kaif looks very pretty and also delivers an excellent performance. Her sense of timing in comic scenes is lovely. Danny Denzongpa stands out in a role which isn’t too lengthy. Pavan Raj Malhotra is very effective in the role of the secret service agent. Javed Jaffery makes his presence felt in a brief role, in a special appearance. Jimmy Shergill has his moments, also in a brief role, in a special appearance. Kanwaljit Singh, Deepti Naval, Vikram Gokhale and Ankur Vikal provide adequate support in guest appearances. Kamlesh Gill is cute as Harleen’s grandmother. Partha Akerkar (as Robert) and Pradeep Kabra (as Big Man) are effective. Pratik Dixit shines in the role of Karan. Others lend the desired support.

Siddharth Anand’s narrative style caters to all classes of audience. His direction is very good and he has succeeded in keeping the viewers involved, right from the start till the end. He doesn’t let the audience’s thoughts wander anywhere. Vishal-Shekhar’s music is already hit. ‘Tu meri’ and the ‘Bang Bang’ song are very fast-paced numbers. ‘Meherbaan’ has lilt and melody. Lyrics, by Vishal Dadlani, Anvita Dutt and Kumaar, are perfectly in synch with the film’s mood. Choreography of the ‘Tu meri’ and ‘Bang Bang’ songs (both by Bosco-Caesar) is truly mesmerising. Special mention must be made of Hrithik Roshan’s outstanding dance movements in both these songs. Ahmed Khan’s choreography in the ‘Meherbaan’ song is eye-filling. Salim-Sulaiman’s background music is wonderful. Sunil Patel’s cinematography, with additional cinematography by Vikas Sivaraman and Benjamin Jasper, is extraordinary. The film looks like a Hollywood film, thanks to the camerawork, canvas and action/stunts. The foreign locations are heavenly. Parvez Shaikh’s action and stunts (with action consultant Andrew Armstrong) takes one’s breath away. Action of this kind has not been seen on the Hindi screen. The water action sequence is out of this world. The chase sequences are just too lovely. Dipankar Dasgupta’s production designing is veritably superb. Editing, by Akiv Ali, is sharp.

On the whole, Bang Bang! is a super-hit because it offers entertainment galore and has something for everyone. It will break a lot of box-office records and could end up joining the Rs. 200-crore club.

  • watched bb also after haider. frankly speaking after watching haider if u watch bb, then bb looks crap movie.
haider is masterpiece. actually want to c bang bang first but didn’t got tickets of morning show so watched haider. Thank god I watched haider.
bb has only action as best part. but it’s very little in first half. 2nd half is just ok.
bb director must have known it’s crap that’s why release movie on extended weekend. It will collect on extended weekend but from Mon haider will dominate.

  • Finally watched Bang Bang FDFS at Forum Mall, Mangalore..it all started with the trailers of Ungli and Exodus..then starts the movie at London where an army officer is killed by a terrorist.cut to that Kat appears on the screen and looks cute and then comes Duggu who was welcomed with whistles and claps by the audience..and then starts Bang Bang..
Bang Bang according to me is a fusion of Bollywood masala and Hollywood class with a typical story, good music and stylish action scenes thrown in..HR as Rajveer Nanda is fabulous..Kat is good in her role but doesn’t look like a small town girl due to her accent..Danny as the baddie was good in whatever part was offered..so did Javed Jaffery..i felt both were underused..one popular actor was great in his cameo role at the start(no spoilers)
Sid Anand’s direction was decent enough..cinematography was good..
My rating 3.5/5 for HR, Kat and the action scenes..

  • Lead Heroine only makes the things worse…?

I was Never a fan of her… I agree she isnt very great at acting… But atleast give her the credit she deserves… It doesn’t suit s Critic to say so..
Such sentences are suitable for haters..

She is a foreigner so its quite difficult for her to get intl the characters of desi roles but she is just so natural in role like this one, Namastey london, welcome, ZNMD…

That is the type of roles that she can pull of easily…
    A Barbie Doll role…
Not award winning but definitely better than her prev perfomances…

  • Final word ! Watch it for ENTERTAINMENT. i Throughly Enjoyed d Movie..nt as a Harcore fan of H.Rm bt as a fan of bollywood movie.

1st Half is fun loving & 2nd Half is Gd. Overall -4/5 by me.

  • The reviewer is bang on. Bang bang is the worst movie i have seen in a long time and that too because my friends forced me to. I wish i could take back my money spent on this boring movie somehow.

  • Movie is way better than kick… But kick got 4 stars??? and bb just 2.5?? Rofl……. I’ve watched d movie ….. Its a good movie with hrithik at his best…. Katrina is not tat bad… Indicine toooo harsh on kat…. Btw I’m going with 6.5/10…. Go watch it n enjoy!!

  • @Indicine, your review sucks!

Yeah take that, it really sucks.

This comes from a non Hro fan.

    Why?

Bang Bang is an out an out action film, so you should focus on that.

The action sequences, the stunts, the chase etc., etc.,

Instead you were more interested in romance, songs and acting of Katrina. lol.

It looks like more of a frusted Deepika’s fan badmouthing Katrina’s lack of acting skill than anything else, after the mega debacle of Finding Fanny. lol. Too cheap.

I hope the movie does well, just to shut Indicine’s mouth.

Also @ INdicine, do not come out and support your ridiculous and biased review by giving some lame excuses.

@ nipun, you should now realise when you give a biased review what happens. You were doing the same thing with Kick. Now its your turn eat it.

    Waiting for Anand’s review

  • Saw the film.Kick and Dhoom 3 were 10 times more enjoyable than Bang Bang. Even in Dhoom 3 Uday chopra brought smile on your face sometimes but there is barely anything enjoyable here, only tiresome action scenes, most of them illogical and nothing special.
    My rating:1/5

  • @jc:where were u when I gave 2.5 for jai ho. . I am equally honest for all movies. .may be sometimes I look biased towards hr. .still, i cann’t give kick more than 2.5 at best.. Yeah, indicine review sucks.

  • I agree with the review..but this is the problem with most of the.big films..the expectations become sky high due to extraordinary promotional tactics and that’s why we end up asking for more.. still I would refer to it as a decent watch just like kick

  • Indicine is right from where they stand, but I believe expectations should not be evident in the review. That leads on to an unjust analysis. With a film of Bang Bangs’ magnitude, comparsion is unavoidable, and it is quite unfair for the movie then to be rated below another that was not as good, only because expectations are inversely proportional. I respect your opinion, this is just mine.

  • @JC, Indicine has been all good words for Bang Bang ever since its been in news, so assuming that they’re being bias is inexact. They’re giving their take on the movie, which everyone does here, don’t they? I agree that it is well worthy of being rated over kick, at least..If you have a look at different sources, the reviews are approximately the same. I haven’t seen a rating over 3 for the movie, yet. But as I said, this film will be driven by entertainment value.

  • Ohh! I was highly depressed! Anupama chopra’s review gave me some happiness. 2.5/5 by her.same as kick and SR.

  • if hrithik fans believe in hrithik and his stardom then
don’t care about critics, don’t care about hr haters
    and review.
just believe in hrithik stardom and his power.
I’m not believe in review. despite of this negativity.
tomorrow or day after tomorrow I’m going to watch
bang bang movie. just for hrithik hardwork
    enjoy bang bang my friends.

  • Bang Bang Review: Hrithik Roshan in Wholesome Entertainment Package

It is Hrithik all over. It is Hrithik in wholesome entertainment package. It is too awesome that you will lose your control and yourself while watching the movie!!! You will wonder what you are doing in the theater! Eventually, it seems that he has learnt to eat with his own spoon without help of papa.
He performs never-seen-before daredevil stunts with the help of Andy whose Arm is Strong. He romances like no one else on this earth. He has done actions excellently and shivered not once but four times.

It starts off with a scene of colonel Nanda (played by Jimmy Shergill) going to meet the international criminal Omar Zafar (played by Danny) in the interpol’s highly secured custody in London. There, in the lock-up itself, Omar Zafar and his goons (that broke into the custody out of nowhere) killed Colonel Nanda. Then, Omar Zafar plans to rob Kohinooor Diamond using an Indian thief to deteriorate the G-G Ties between UK Govt and Indian Govt. So, the robbery of the Kohinoor Diamond surfaced. The thief happens none other than Krishh Mehra (now name changed to Rajveer) is escaping the jadoo land after being accused of BO Manipulation.

He bangs his entry showcasing his double thumbs and the diamond he had robbed earlier. The goons of the Omar Zafar and ISS Agents were after him for the diamond. During the Luka Chupi Game among them, he happens to meet Harleen Sahani through mistaken identity. Actually, she is out on date at a restaurant to meet the person called Vickie whom she had met via a dating website called Trueluv.com. Now, I am sure Rajveer’s many kid fans wannabe teens like nipun kumar, L’ll Ricky Bahl and 60+ Bachelor Babaji will visit the site to find their soul mate.

The story goes on and at the end, we come to know that Rajveer is a ISS agent and the robbery of the diamond was nothing but a hoax and media propaganda set up to trap the international criminal Omar Zafar. So, the Diamond was never robbed and is safe in its place.

Now the question is the whole set up was created to trap international Wanted Criminal Omar Zafar. But how and why Omar Zafar has become an international criminal wanted by interpol? Why? Maybe because of his name! So, Omar Zafar should have instead said “my name is zafar and I am not a terrorist.” Kidding!!! No criminal background story of Omar Zafar was given. So, I should call the plot of the film is very shallow. It leaves you in a bad taste.

Since it is a remake of the Knight and Day, its comparison with Knight and Day is unavoidable. They have re-written the screenplay and replaced the battery (innovated by a student in original knight and day) with the story of Kohinoor. But Hrithik taught the Hollywood actors how to make those scenes look better when once shivers.

There are a few epic shivering scenes:
    1) when Hrithik jumps over a car with a motorbike when Harleen was being abducted by ISS agent for the first time from her office (i.e. Bank of Shimla) [during this chase scene, our very nipun kumar was spotted on a bus. He was surprised to see his icon and called out his mommy to show her his hero. But by then, the hero had disappeared. Poor soul Nipun, maa ko dikaa nahin paya par he saved his icon by warning him from the danger of the electric shocks occurring in the lamp posts.]
    2) when he points his gun at harleen at a Pizza Hut,
    3) when he lets Omar Zafar know that the killed Colonel Nanda was his brother and
    4) in the climax scene before killing Omar Zafar.

No matter what, Hrithik has taught Tom Cruise how to act, perform actions and romance. Tom Cruise will die of shame once he watches Bang Bang. Especially, the action scenes in the sea are amazing. Hence because they (Rajveer and Harleen) were able to travel from an island of Mauritius to the Prague city of Czech Republic with Water-Ski tied to a Sea-Plane.

Hrithik has put Dolphin Species into shame by jumping out of water using water-ski in an extra ordinary manner. Now, it has been learnt that the leaders of the Dolphin Species have summoned all the Dolphins in the seas and oceans for a meeting to find out who the hell is this new and extraordinary invader to their region and pride. Rumors have been that the Dolphins will invite Rajveer to teach them how to jump and perform water stunts better using water-ski.

Coming to the dance movie in the movie, they were mindblowing. MJ, wherever the hell or heaven he is, will be regretting why he did so much hard work in innovating dance steps. Because when one can fool audiences and earn money from the so-called dances that have nothing to do but swaying from side to side, jumping like deers and behaving children with extreme hyperactivity disorder. Besides, MJ will also cry for the fact that some people are raping his iconic dance steps calling them they have done in their own styles. All in all, no matter what, Hrithik rocks big time when hes dance. Because he is the best!

Yes, our dear and gorgeous Katrina Kaifji excels. Cameron Diaz will quit acting if she happens to watch the Hindi version of Bang Bang. Cameron Diaz needs to learn how and where to give expressions. If necessary, over-expressions, over-acting. Billiji was looking extraordinary whenever she tries to give an expression like teenager!

Hollywood needs to learn from Bang Bang makers how to make a better movie with the lower budget. James Mangold needs to learn direction from Siddarth Anand, the knowledge house of direction. Expressionless Cameron Diaz needs to learn how to give expressions from our dear class actress Billi ji.

Having said, Bang Bang is set to earn Moolahs at Box Office. All the big blue dressed up jaadoo fans i.e. children that are still sleeping with jaadoo toy beside them will be flocking into the theatres. So, naturally, they can’t go alone since they are underage and their guardians must accompany. You are going to see amazing numbers of footfalls in theatres. Go and watch Bang Bang if you want to see Hrithik scoring all rounds. Else, skip it and watch Hindi Dubbed Version of Knight and Day.

    My rating of Bang Bang:
    Stunts and Actions: 4/5*****
    Signature Shivering: 5/5*****
    Cinematography: 3.5/5*****
    Romance: 3/5*****
    Drama: 2/5*****
    Comedy: 1.5/5*****
    Dialogue Deliveries: 1/5*****

    Average Rating: 4/5*****
3 Extra Stars for Putting Dolphin Species and Tom Cruise into Shame and teaching Hollywood how to make better movies with lower budget.

So, my overall rating for Bang Bang: 7/5*****

  • OMG what a review- makes KICK look like Fast n Furious n Bang Bang sounds worse than Knight n Day and that took some doing…

I dont think Indicines resident Agony Aunt n only Honest critiK nipun kumar is going to like this review 1 single bit…

(For the record I have not read any comment in the 4 pages but will do sonow…)

  • @JC 5:56pm

Dont be too harsh on Indicine- come on dude 145 cr on a remake n they couldnt improve on the story or plot of the original flop knight n day. We all know remakes isnt as easy ppl make it out to be but for once we bhai fans can shout loudly ‘HAHAHAHA’ at the fact that other silly fans hero/s tried remaking a movie and didnt do a better job… Remakes are tougher than what ppl make them out to be- srk, aamir, salman, akki and Hrithik have all done remakes n honestly speaking not many can say they have done a better job than the original..

    Great review Indicine

  • My Review :

First n foremost I am not Hrithik hater, he is my 2nd fav after Salman. Coming to review of BANG BANG people had huge expectations from it since Fox studio product, sizzling chemistry n Hrithik in a stylish action role since Dhoom 2:

Story : Not upto to the expectations n buzz it genetated. Very predictable as soon as Kohinoor is stolen you knew its Hrithik who did it n before interval you can guess why he did it (no spoilers).

Screenplay : two paced. first half is dragging n 2nd half specially climax too hurried but looks outstanding !!!!!!

Cinematography : High class n top notch. Locations are captured very well be it Shimla, London or Desert (climax). However I felt so many times that it is ETT2 lot of scenes resembles from ETT : Hrithik giving chase to goons on roofs in Shimla, Kat n Hrithik initial meetings n coversations, HR playing spy (revealed before climax), bike chase n the water plane chase. Some may not agree but thats what I felt !!!!!!!

Acting : HR gives blood n soul for movie but sadly no other actor able to match even half of it. It is often proved Kat is not a good actress as Priyanka or Deepika forget about comparing her to Vidya or Kangana. Danny is ok n Javed Jaffrey is wasted. Rest of the cast just ordinary.

Music : 2 songs are outstanding due to HR movies : Tu Meri n Title. Meherbaan is also good but mainly due to breathtaking locations. Uff is unnecessarily forced into screenplay.

Action : It is top notch n stylish but not as same as Hollywood standards. Bang Bang action is more stylish than D3 & Kick but movie is not even half entertaining as these two.

I will not give any rating but overall a let down. Moon was promised using teaser n action sequences but it turned out as Amaavas !!!!!!!! If you like HR please dont miss this but still not his best work !!!!!!! Opening n weekend may be huge but 200 cr looks distance as it lacks repeat value n strictly not for family audience due to two paced & excess action scenes. Kick record will remain intact though I wanted Bang Bang to be among Top 3 grossers of the year.

All the best to Haider n HNY !!!!!

  • Forgets Rating – Forget Critics – Forget Everything

  • just watched bang bang..

    The good:
    1)It’s good in parts.
2)Good action scenes.Takes bollywood to another level

    The bad:
    1)script is weak
2)action+romance did not work well … Blame the director for this
    3)katrina needs to learn acting
4)Its still true that in bollywood movies ,laws of physics dont work.Further refinement is required
5)I found VFX to be poor
    6)F1 car scene was ridiculous

over all : Decent watch. Dont expect much. All the action scenes are the ones showed in the trailer!!!

Let me know what do u think
