Bajirao Mastani has performed very well on its 2nd day at the box office, accumulating a good total of Rs 15.52 crore net. Ideally, this is where the starting point of the film should have been, but growth of 22% from Friday is a positive trend.
The Sanjay Leela Bhansali film was excellent in Maharashtra, but even in the North – where it was not expected to do well – the film has shown excellent gains. Saturday was better than Friday in NCR and surrounding multiplex dominated areas, and Sunday is set to be higher than Saturday.
In just two days, there is a big lesson to be learnt from a clash between two big films. Fans of actors will watch their hero on the big screen, but the normal audience who want value for the money that they spend, are more than willing to give the smaller of the two films a chance.
Multiplex tickets are insanely expensive now, especially in metro cities where it can cost a family of 4 upwards of 2000 rupees per movie outing. So the film that carries better word-of-mouth (or in other words the film that gets recommended by friends) – irrespective of the star cast – will be given preference.
Bajirao Mastani is looking at first weekend business of around 46 crore and possibly 75 crore first week. Anything more than a 75 crore first week would set the film up for a long and successful run at the box office.

I guess the reason why BM is performing so well is because it is doing excellent business in Maharashtra region (because it is a story of a Maratha warrior) , which includes Mumbai. As we all know that Mumbai is the region which is where a huge chunk of business comes from, so it’s performing so glaringly well.
I’m not discouraging it, it’s a well made film, no doubt.
I’m just trying so say the reason why Dilwale is underperforming a tad bit. It is because people in these places are preferring BM over Dilwale. And as indicine pointed out, the ticket prices are exceptionally high, not everyone can afford to see both the films, so people in Maharashtra region (which adds a huge chunk of pan-India collections) are preffering to see a movie on a Maratha warrior.
Frm a scenario of a win win sitauation for dilwale, it luks like both will win althgh bajirao collctns r set 2 b lower than dilwale coz of its genre n lesser screens n competition against a legend!! How much less than dilwale weekdays will tell!! If it is not more than 40 cr less in lifetime collctns it wld be a big win 4 bajirao!! Dilwale on the other hand in any case wld earn more than bajrao courtesy brand srk n also the full family genre shd help!

I watched BM again in PVR, Bhopal and this time i liked it even more. It was an afternoon show and hall was 75% full.
I enquired with staff and other concerned people and their view point is as follows:
1. Friday- There was no competition it was Dilwale all the way. Ticket sales was 70:30 in favour of Dilwale.
2. Saturday- Even they were surprised, when there is no jump in ticket demand for Dilwale but more people wanted to watch BM. Ticket sales was 60:40 still in favour of Dilwale.
3. Sunday- By now WOM has started to come in full force and its neck and neck now.
Monday onwards, Family audience will stay away from Both the movies. SRK loyals will keep on watching Dilwale. Neutral Fans will watch BM.
So My take, Both movies will make moolahs but its not a one way race.

I wrote one comment previously that this is 2015 not 2007 when only SRK movies were blockbuster unlike others………People are not dumb…..Why they will prefer to see same kind of movies of SRK released every year(CE,HNY,now Dilwale)?????……Remember Salman also accepted that same masala movies don’t work everytime e.g. Jai Ho…..
I saw both movies …….General audience will tell you clearly that Bajirao Mastani is far more superior than Dilwale in each and every aspect except mindless humour and music……It is SLB’s dream project….Yes the pace of movie is somehow slow but remember it’s a cult movie….. these type of movies don’t come daily…..terrific performance by all the actors (extraordinary performance by Ranveer…he blew my mind….Oh God)……
