When an offbeat film of yours ends up finding all-around appreciation, starts breaking records, gives a character artist a hero status, battles challenges that could have been reputation threatening and ends up gaining a cult status for itself, it can be pretty much said that things are indeed falling in place for you as a filmmaker.
Akshay Kumar may well be saying this to himself, what with ‘OMG – Oh My God’ cruising towards the 80 crore mark just in India and carrying a decent chance of registering 100 crore in worldwide collections. This, when two of his films (Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore) have already joined the 100 crore club this year and one more (Khiladi 786) is all set to repeat the feat in less than two months from now.
The man who was being questioned for his script selection not too long ago is now being hailed for getting it right across genres and scoring well too. The same guy who hadn’t lost his charm or the acting prowess, was the fittest in the business, had boasted of looks that had stayed steady despite a few downs in his career and had glowed without the need of any surgical helps, smiled through his not so good times and is now calling the shots in a big way, and how.
Suddenly, all choices made by him seem to be worth in gold. ‘Khiladi 786’ is coming across as a true blue action comedy franchise which just can’t go wrong. ‘Special Chabbis’ is touted as a slick heist thriller in the offering early next year. ‘Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2’ is a sequel that stands tall amidst Top-5 most awaited films of 2013. ‘Naam Hai Boss’ is an entertaining ‘masala’ flick that has the cushion of being a South remake. With another remake already in the pipeline with A.R. Murugadoss and close friend Sajid Nadiadwala planning a biggie with him, Akshay has earned his Bollywood standing in a big way.
This isn’t where he is stopping as his freshly floated production house ‘Grazing Goat’ has pretty much turned out to be a ‘Golden Goat’ for him. With many more productions in the pipeline, starting with ’72 Miles’ which is ready for release, Akshay is juggling his many roles and revelling in all the success coming his way. Clearly, he is enjoying the best phase of his career and just like the Khan trio along with Ajay Devgn has firmed up his place further in the Top-5.

Akshay Kumar has patchy record. Sometimes he gives too many flops in a row. Sometimes he gives consecutive hits. OMG’s success is great but one quality film can’t change his image. I think Hera Pheri & OMG are only quality films Akki has done in 20 years. You can’t compare him to Khans, Devgn or Hrithik. He’ll forever remain what SRK called him in 1994 – a junk food hero!

so every 1 of his hits credit goes to either dA director or his co_stars??? sajid khan ko akki nai banai hai, remember sajid’s 1st film was with akki. rowdy rathore no one in hindi belt saw that south film, people were excited to see akki back to his mass orientated role, and this was da directors 2nd film movie, with no well known support cast, item girls, heroine still a newcommer, producer who has been flop king. OMG was akshay kumar film because he produced it, and promoted as his own movie, he deserves credit and launched a debutant director, he was play7in title role of god which attracted his fan.
Paresh rawal only teamed up wid akki so he knows he can use akki to get his 1st hit in a leading role. OMG opened bigger than his priyansharhsan film khamal dhamal release the same day. don’t forget it was akki who promoted the product, appeared in the most popular songs and had a good important title. even aamir came after da interval of TZP, then should take credit away from aamir?
a great article..well written and 100% true.all akki haters know well thats its true..so they will try their best to rubbish anything that comes across. ofcourse i’m not forgetting joker flopped..but dont criticize akshay 4 that..its because of shirish kunders bad script..not because of actor. no movies with established actors flop because of them, it may be of script, poor direction, poor marketing or dragging movies like SOTY..Then you can even blame amitabh bachchan too of his flops…so that doesn’t make sense.9 movies are lined up for akki upto mid 2014 and all biggies with sure shot success predictions.and plese…plese dont include ajay devgn name in top 5 list..his career will be over soon. no offence.
Also guys, pls don’t underestimate ajay’s achievement. so what if he has given hit with rohit shetty? how many hits have rohit shetty given without ajay? Joker is a disaster and I thank akki for not promoting such a weak product, that does not even affect akki as the kind of success he has had this year, it affects shirish kunder.
true it is not like rohit was an established director when he came to industry, his pairing with ajay has become a golden collaboration, today if rohit gave a flop then he wudn’t survive in the industry, whilst ajay is an establish great actor, has a production banner, he will always be there till he retires.
