Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was one of the most anticipated movies of the year. The expectations were high because Karan was returning 4 years after ‘Student Of The Year’ and he had a solid star cast in Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan too.
But the odds throughout the campaign were stacked against the film. There were threats of boycott because it featured Fawad Khan, there was a bigger film ‘Shivaay’ which was also scheduled to release on the same day and many though ADHM might only appeal to the urban audience.
6 days after release, the tide has turned and ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ is already a profitable film for its investors.
The breakup of economics:
- Cost of Production – 68 crore
- Print and Advertising – 20 crore (14 crore in India, 6 crore overseas)
- Margin for Fox Star Studios – 15 crore
- Total – 103 crore
Note: The cost of production does not include Karan Johar’s direction fee, but it doesn’t need to (he is the producer).
Non-theatrical Recovery:
- Satellite Rights – 45 crore
- Music – 19 crore
- Digital – 10 crore
- Total non-theatrical – 74 crore
In short, even after including the distribution margin of Fox Star Studios, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil has to recover only around Rs 29 crore from theatrical business – a figure that would be covered just from the overseas business of the film.
However, a big film like ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ cannot be declared a hit if the domestic net box office collections aren’t equal to or higher than the costs.
Here is the break-down of how much Ae Dil Hai Mushkil needs to attain various box office verdicts:
- Below 85 crore – Flop
- Below 100 crore – Average grosser
- 100 crore or more – Hit
- 130 crore or more – Super hit
- 170 crore or more – Blockbuster
This is a paid site..cost of.production for ADHM is very high…foreign locations…big expensive stars..cost for recovery is 100+ crores..same for Shivaay.. Foreign locations + vfx…but remember no big star fees..ajay himself is producer.. So 100 + cr required for Shivaay as well..which it will safely collect for being an economically safe venture.. 70 cr week one is done n am sure for 25-30 cr week 2…week 3-4 collections will be bonus and will collectively collect 8-10 crore for sure

For Ajay Devgn’s fans and Retard Sallu fans, critics are paid, indicine is paid, BOI is paid, KRK is paid, Aamir is paid, even they said that MNS is paid by Karan to create that hullabulla to increase hype. Joy Aamirian : Why are you getting your hands dirty in this ? Either you are Srk or Kjo or Ranbir fan or a hater of Salman or Ajay but definitely not fan of Aamir. Shivaay was an one man show whereas ADHM had so many big names, hit music plus controversy & sympathy still difference in final collections (India) will not be 15-20 crs.
I guess all these Srk fans will sit with their parents and watch ADHM premiere on TV. I wish Srk does a Maya Memsaab 2 they will enjoy that movie as well (with families).
For some friend who is asking how above 100 Crore for ADHM will be a hit, its very simple man, for producers its already been in the profit zone with Satellite rights and Overseas collection, the 100 cr earning is only for Distributors profit.

Acting was good as usual from RK and AS. But what a stupid story… Absolutely BS! How many times have we seen this same formula?
Also the bold heads at the end was hilarious, so fake. If shes got cancer (if that was a spoiler for you, you must be a retard) and lost all her hair, why has she still got her eye brows and why does her skin look so vibrant? Typical Bollywood Bulshit.
Usaully RK and AS movies are quite entertaining. But this is just a load of Tuti. Theres no point in watching it. Even if you download it illegally, delete it, as it will just be a waste of disk space. What a shit story line, absolute shit.
