#AskIndicine: Live Question and Answers at 3PM

Q. Why are the number of screens in India so less? When a movie like Baahubali has 5000 screen release in China, what is stopping us? With more number of screens these clashes will be almost redundant.. Please give ur opinion – Gaurav Sharma A. There is absolutely no scarcity of screens in India. The country has more than 10000 screens (which includes muliplexes and single-screen theatres). But ‘screens’ is a highly misunderstood term among visitors of our site, those who love discussing numbers and the mainstream media too doesn’t understand trade. Recently, a journalist was quoted as saying ‘Queen’, which released on 800 screens (first week) and collected 60 crore, would have collected 250 crore if it released on 3000 screens. Another question that is often asked is why Akshay Kumar films don’t get 4000 plus screens, which they say, would help him get record opening at the box office. Such comments are silly. When a distributor distributes a film, he has to first ascertain if the film in question has a market (audience) where he releases it. Giving ‘Queen’ a 3000 screen release would mean a wide single-screen release in circuits where the film won’t be watched by anyone, which also means the print / release cost is more than what the film will earn on that screen (or theatre). At the same time, when the film features Salman Khan in the lead, he has an audience in the interiors of India, even at a small village in UP or Bihar, where another actor’s film might not work. That’s exactly why the Khans get the highest number of screens, followed by Hrithik Roshan.

Komal Nahta talks about Bajirao Mastani vs Dilwale clash

Trade analyst Komal Nahta talks about the box office clash during Christmas, between Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani. The trade is still hoping that one of the two films – Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani – would be postponed so that the big clash on 18th December is averted. I have seen around 50 minutes of Shah Rukh Khan and Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale. I have also seen the trailer and the song of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Eros International’s Bajirao Mastani. Both the films hold promise of clicking at the box-office in a very big way. There is every reason to believe that Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s romance in Dilwale will appeal to the audience this time also as it has done so often in the past. Varun Dhawan brings in the youth factor in Rohit Shetty’s film and one doesn’t need to emphasise how popular he is among the youth today. Shah Rukh and Rohit have delivered a blockbuster in Chennai Express and so, what prevents one from assuming that Dilwale will surpass the business of Chennai Express?

Clash will affect both films, but ‘Dilwale’ has Shah Rukh Khan: Varun Dhawan

Varun Dhawan got his own spot at the 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, which is a sign that the ‘Student Of The Year’ star has come a long way since his debut film 3 years ago. The actor discussed films that changed his life, economics of his films and the much-debated clash between Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale and Ranveer Singh’s Bajirao Mastani later this year.

Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 decimates Shaandaar: Box Office Comparison

About a week ago, when Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 was performing well at the box office, the release of Dharma Productions’ Shaandaar was expected to end the glorious run of a film that didn’t have any face-value. The only factor in favour of the Luv Ranjan film was that it was a sequel to a film that gained popularity with the youth, even after its theatrical run – through DVD and television. In fact, for such films, even piracy can make a difference as people who watch pirated copies might end up watching the sequel in theatres!

And then there will be Dabangg (third film)” Earlier there were reports that
