Rajkumar Hirani, director of films like Munnabhai series, 3 Idiots and PK, is currently working on the 5th film of his career which will be biopic on actor and friend Sanjay Dutt.
The director has said that he was uncomfortable when it came to dealing with the ‘underworld’ side of Dutt’s life.
“I was a little skeptical initially. I didn’t want to touch upon the topic of the underworld as that’s not my favourite word. However, when Abhijat (Joshi) and I heard the story, we met Sanjay Dutt almost every evening for the next 25 days and later found that this is a story we wanted to say because it’s a human story. This will be the most entertaining film we ever did” Hirani said at 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
The director was quick to add that he would not make a film to elevate somebody as a person or to clear Sanjay Dutt’s image in the eyes of the public.
“I will make a film which is honest. I take five years to make a movie. Spending so much time on a movie because I want a great story” he added.
Hirani also said that he never makes films to please anyone.
“Never make films to please others. You’re the best judge of what will work and if you think what you’ve written will click, then do it”
Speaking along with his writing partner Abhijat Joshi on ‘How to make a blockbuster’, Hirani shared the secret behind the blockbuster formula.
“It’s simple. If you’re a filmmaker, remember that you can never attempt to make a blockbuster. Abhijat and I always like to work on a unique idea for our films. Even if these ideas have been attempted before, you just have to choose a different path to tell them” Hirani said.

Hirani’s ability to strike cord with the audience is terrific. Also he is an excellent judge of his own films. When PK was on a record-breaking spree Hirani honestly confessed that PK was not his best film.

I am happy to see such a statement from Raju Hirani as he rarely talks about himself . But i am still not sure will Ranbir Kapoor do justice to the character of Sanjay Dutt . Ranbir has not yet done a Action movie and in Besharam he tried to do a masala movie he fell flat on his face . I have huge respect for Hirani and Abhijat Joshi because they are brilliant and their writing is amazing . Apart from PK i have liked all his movies . Apart from content all his movies are entertaining so this will be a huge challenge for Hirani, Joshi and Ranbir . I want him to make a movie which is actually based on Sanjay Dutt . There are many aspects in his life which can be shown such as – Son of Sunil Dutt a great Actor and a Politician . Son of Nargis a brilliant actress . Bodybuilder, smoker, drugs, detention cente, alleged relations with underworld especially Dawood Ibrahim, 3 Wives and a successful career as an Actor . Best of Luck Hirani Sir and i hope with Dutt you can make something brilliant like Munnabhai and 3 Idiots . Till now the Best Biopic according to me is BMB to excel and outdo will require something extraordinary but you can’t underestimate Rajkumar Hirani !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually good to see Hirani coming out of his comfort zone and trying an altogether different genre movie.
Expectations will be once again very high but I think this movie will lack universal appeal unlike his previous movies.
If this biopic starring ranbir kapoor then he will surely spoil the sanju baba character due to his khusur phusur type poor dialogue delivery.
If this movie fails to be ATBB than it will give a tight kick in the ass of all aamir haters. This will be the real test of so called raju hirani of what he can do without megastar aamir khan. I am sure Dangal will be much bigger grosser than this crap biopic.

I really don’t think a movie on Sanjay Dutt is required that too from a class director like Hirani. Hirani should work on some more good concepts. He was pretty average with PK. With Sanjay Dutt biopic, I dont think he will be doing justice to himself and the audience who believe in his work.
