Yuvraaj Movie Review

The showman is back after two back to back disasters (Yaadein, Kisna) and the average Black and White. Disputes between brother’s and families is something we have seen in many Bollywood movies from the 90s, but Subhash Ghai in an interview said “although Yuvraaj has a common theme, the difference lies in the treatment, the way characters react to certain situations. The movie is about how the new generation react to family situations.” Lets find out if the ‘different treatment’ is indeed worth a watch.

Yuvraaj is about 3 brothers – Deven Yuvraaj (Salman Khan), Gyanesh Yuvraaj (Anil Kapoor) and Dyanesh Yuvraaj a.k.a Danny (Zayed Khan). The three brothers do not get along well. After the death of their father, Danny hatches a plot of conquering the wealth all to himself. Deven on the other hand, greedy for a major chunk of the fortune, manipulates his brothers, so that he can marry Anushka (Katrina Kaif).

But Deven and Danny soon find out, to their utter dismay, that all the wealth would go to their brother Gyanesh, who as a kid was treated so badly that he now prefers to be in the company of children only! Yuvraaj is about how the greed for materialistic things can destroy, its also about morals and love for family.

Yuvraaj Review

Ghai proves with Yuvraaj that he has not completely lost his golden showman touch! Few scenes have the director’s stamp all over them. But unfortunately Ghai fails in holding the attention of the viewer throughout. Part blame for which should go to the loose script. Infact the movie would have been a lot better, had the director concentrated more on the screenplay rather than making each scene look picture-perfect. A few unnecessary scenes which depict nature’s beauty add to the runtime.

The first half of Yuvraj has a 90s feel to it, which might not appeal to the current generation. The second half, filled with drama and emotions, works and the credit for which should go to Anil Kapoor’s, who completely dominates the second half with an amazing performance which at times reminds you of Hrithik Roshan’s award winning act in Koi Mil Gaya.

Salman does well in the scenes with Anil Kapoor, a much-better-than-expected performance. His look though lacks consistency. Zayed Khan manages to act at times. Katrina Kaif looks beautiful, no scope to display her acting talent, which is good because if there is anything at all that Katrina lacks, its gotta be talent in the acting department. About the Katrina – Salman chemistry, its barely a teaser, where a topless Salman is handcuffed (with a scarf) by Katrina. Boman Irani does well. The music by AR Rehman is good, but not up to the standards we have come to expect from Subhash Ghai films.

Overall, Yuvraaj is worth a watch in theatre if a story on disputes within the family excites you, a subject that was common in the 90s but quite rare now. Yuvraj is also worth a watch for Anil Kapoor’s brilliance and a return to form of Subhash Ghai, who doesn’t really manage to score a brilliant century but manages to produce a fighting fifty!

So I go with 2 and a half on five for Subhash Ghai’s Yuvraaj. At the box-office, the initial should be good. A lot would depend on word of mouth, which would help the movie sustain Monday onwards.

Rating: ★★½☆☆ Average to Above Average

Other Notes – After Yuvraj the next big release is Shahrukh Khan and Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi which releases on 12th December. I am sure most would be looking forward to that, atleast we are. We have received a lot of mails asking for a Dasvidaniya Review (starring Vinay Pathak) we promise to put that up soon. Thanks for reading the Yuvraj Review. Leave your comments / reviews on Yuvraaj below.

  • TO INDICINE TEAM AND ALL THE COLLEAGES:

I AM REALLY SORRY FOR THE SHOCKING NEWS.. FOR WHAT’S HAPPENING IN MUMBAI.. I’VE BEEN FOLLOWING THE NEWS SINCE LAST NIGHT.. AND TODAY.. I DIDN’T HAVE A GOOD DAY.. THINKING OF ALL THE VICTIMS WHO ARE DEAD AND THEIR FAMILIES..

HOPE THAT EVERYTHING WILL GO BACK TO NORMAL SOON.. THE TERRORISTS WILL BE CAUGHT AND WOULD FREE THE HOSTAGES.

  • I don’t undersatnd why do salman choose these kinds of movies. He could be better if he choose a solo movie.
I hope that he learn from his mistakes and wrong desitions. Salman’s biggest mistake in his life was not signning for Baazigar.
I hope that his upcomming movies do well.
Finally, I want to say that ” East or West Salman Is The Best ^_^ ”

His upcomming movie is ” Main & Mrs Khanna “

  • we watched this movie 1st half of the movie was very boring 2nd half was so boring that we were nt able to watch it more…
anil was only fine in the movie…katrina was sometime good n rest was all bakwas…………

  • rocking film. I know Indian audience will not like the so called boring look and music of the film , thats their taste, but i know foreign audience will love the film. Its Salman and Anil who dare to do such movies I bet other actors cant even think about it

  • Yuck! What has happened to movies by end of 2008! The year started great with jodha akbar but man, yuvraj sucks! Salman s charm( not acting) is GONE! Anil was the only thing good in this weak film. Directors and salman should stop pushing katrina in movies( prietty but CANT ACT!)i am sick of seeing her. no talent what soever

  • Just awful! An epic mess! The direction, story, the performances were all a mess! In the cast, katrina was miscast yet again, her acting skills are very minimal. Even priyanka has proven that she is a better actress than her, anil was great! Salman is ageing acting wise. looks great though. All in all, subhash should see TAAL again to figure out WHAT WENT RIGHT THEN!

  • this is the year of lousy films after drona fashion and dostana heres another cropper ..the mother of all disasters .right besides drona for horrible cinema ..while dostana is pedestrian this one is worse..mr ghai has lost all sense of balance and is getting close to 60..so he makes this..people avoid this just as you avoided fashion and dostana

  • Vivek: You’re right that Youvraj isn’t a good movie.. I didn’t like it too except 2 songs, but Dostana & Fashion.. both are very good movies.. if u didn’t like these 2 movies, whice one is a great fun comedy which I don’t think that bollywood can ever make any better in future, and the other one is a serious, drama, good story, good direction.. new script and everything was good about Fashion with nice songs.. so what else do u all want from watching any movie?!!!!! which type of movies do u really consider as good movies.. the latest released ones?

I was defending LS2050 which most of u didn’t like it.. but Dostana & Fashion r succesful movies.. if u visit http://www.masala.com u will read that Dostana did so far 500million rupees and Fashion was a super success movie.

  • both dostana and fashion are average flops ansd will soon land up on your tv but this one will land the quickest…what went wrong with dostana was its lack of comedy and with fashion was lack of tragedy .who can like such inane movies? surely not an educated soul!!! but yuvraaj is the pits>>>the same old ghai effects ..i just cant take it anymore ..throw these three movies in the dustbin along with drona churn and spill i tin the sewage

  • after reading everyones comments, i decided to go and watch the movie. In South Africa, the movie is still playing to packed houses. i managed to get the last ticket right in the front of the theatre. I really enjoyed the movie….especially the second half. All the actors performed very well.

  • it is a very good movie, its review should be atleast 4/5. Salman bhai rocks , Superb acting performance from anilkapoor, worth watching.

  • Horrible! Its packed with bad sappy scenes, bad actors( katrina, salman… Seriously think about them) bad story! To sum up, a terrible film! Have to give ANIL credit though, not bad.

  • Yuvvraaj is among the top ten SA movies at the moment including bollywood and hollywood movies. What does that tell you. Check on New24, its there.

  • this is a senseless movie….
its disgusting to find such star cast (salman and anil kapoor) performing for such absurd script… although salmaan does not mind a bad script at all!! acting is not his cup of tea …
SUBHASH GAI should change his proffession now.. how abt a barber!! but kindly away from my city!!!!
these peopl only want to make money.. plz tell them v vil pay double the amount but kindly stop this TORTURE!!!
STARLESS …. SORRY BUT THEY DESERVE IT…

  • I know it’s late, but I just saw the movie yesterday.

What I’ve noticed in most of these reviews, is that people are biased based on who their favorite actor is. I think this film fails completely to convey the emaotions and the intent of the story because of bad directing and screenplay. What happened to Subhash ghai – Karz (my fav movie), Hero, Meri Jung, Karma, Ram Lakhan, Pardes, Taal et all. I also think Kisna was not that bad, but this movie was such a disappointment.

It’s not Anil Kapoor (1942 A love story, Saaheb, Pukar, Virasat and the list goes on) or Salman Khan (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) did a bad job, they got the wrong direction. Although I agree Slaman should do more meaningful roles, like in Heroes etc., he annoys me when he starts acting like a girl (chichodapan), his brother Sohail Khan is following the same footsteps, and they call that acting, lol.

I have sisters and brothers, but simply said this movie was. A movie should touch your heart, take you attention away, but I was the movie was so boring. I think Subhash Ghai needs go through some movie therapy and find his old self back.

Recent movies on top of my head I thoroughly enjoyed:
    Dasvidaniya
    Heroes
Dostana – not that great but entertaining
    Aamir
    Welcome to Sajanpur
    U Me Aur Hum

Just tell me the child actor from Tare Zameen Par is a great actor. He did a great job, but it was the direction and screenplay which made it happen. No good actor can save a terrible movie.

When the audience will get more critical, we will not have bear such crap anymore, cause nowadays everyone thinks they can make a movie, act, sing and all. I missed old times when I see such movies, there was more emphasis on quality and not quantity. I’m 30 btw, not that old.
