Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Airlift make for a very interesting box office comparison. Tanu Weds Manu Returns had the franchise factor in its favour, while Airlift had Akshay Kumar’s star power which eventually helped the film take a bigger opening on Day 1. The clash factor didn’t make much difference because the target audience of Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 was completely different.
TWMR showed phenomenal growth, jumping by 50% on Day 2 at the box office. Airlift had lesser growth, but has the big holiday for Republic Day on its 5th day.
With the trade expecting Airlift to be Akshay Kumar’s biggest grosser, it’ll be interesting to track the day-wise progress of the film and see how it matches upto Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns vs Airlift Total Box Office Collections
At the end of Day 4, Airlift has collected Rs 54.7 crore, while Tanu Weds Manu Returns had collected Rs 47.05 crore. The difference is Rs 7.65 crore in favour of Airlift and the lead is expected to widen to around Rs 14 crore by the end of today. That’s a big lead to have and with no major ‘multiplex’ film releasing in the next couple of weeks, Airlift has every chance to beat Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
However, TWMR held up very strongly in Week 2. So it remains to be seen how Airlift performs after the big holiday on Tuesday.
Update 27 January 2016: Yesterday, the difference between the two films was Rs 7.65 crore. But after a huge Republic Day holiday, Airlift has now taken the difference between the two films to Rs 17.25 crore. The difference is pretty big now, which means, Airlift doesn’t even have to collect as much as Tanu Weds Manu Returns did in Week 2, to beat the film. A total of 150 crore plus looking more likely with each passing day for Airlift.
Update 29 January 2016: Things can change pretty quickly at the box office. The difference in collections has now narrowed down to Rs 13.48 crore, with Airlift continuing to lead. As you can see from the table below, Tanu Weds Manu Returns was rock solid on Wednesday and Thursday. The drop from Wednesday to Thursday for TWMR was 10%, while Airlift has fallen by nearly 17%. The second weekend will now decide if Airlift has any chance of crossing the 150 crore mark. TWMR collected 28.3 crore in its second weekend. Airlift would have to collect somewhere around the 25 crore mark to have a chance.
Update 31 January 2016: Airlift is still leading TWMR at the end of Day 9 at the box office, but the difference between the two films is now down to Rs 8.43 crore. At its peak, Airlift was ahead of TWMR by 17.25 crore. The difference on 2nd Saturday is a huge Rs 3 crore, which could be huge to the wider appeal of TWMR – a film that also performed well at single-screens. The trend suggests Airlift has little or no chance of beating the Kangana Ranaut starrer. The costs of the two films are similar, with Airlift being the slightly more expensive film.

Stop dreaming of 150-200 cr… it’s not going to happen.
i expect airlift to earn 15 crores today and a cumulative of 15 crores on the following two days. Rememer, in actual terms airlift’s monday is around 9 crores because the republic day eve helped evening shows. So 84 crores week 1 plus a 38-40 crores week 2, coz i don’t really see it holding at TWMR’s levels. Lifetime will be between 145-147 crores. Won’t touch 150 crores. BLOCKBUSTER.

TWMR collected that much bcoz of strong content and sequel factor not bcoz of kangaroo. Her next two releases were disaster katti batti and i love NY with collection of 20cr and 2cr respectively

Tana manu weds returns had universal appeal . It was out n out entertaining movie .
But airlift challenging it’s collections is commendable ,doing way more then it’s reach . I m surprised !! Khiladi will hve best time this year .

Hugely disappoint after average theatrical trailer. To beat TWMR is impossible. Bad movie ever.
It will never cross twmr lifetime. My prediction 109 cr . At best case it can touch 120 cr.
Finaly akshay movie doing collection Accroding to his stardom…khiladi will always give a competition to khans…hrithk ranbir can give temporary competition but akshay is permanent competition for khans .
