Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Airlift make for a very interesting box office comparison. Tanu Weds Manu Returns had the franchise factor in its favour, while Airlift had Akshay Kumar’s star power which eventually helped the film take a bigger opening on Day 1. The clash factor didn’t make much difference because the target audience of Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 was completely different.
TWMR showed phenomenal growth, jumping by 50% on Day 2 at the box office. Airlift had lesser growth, but has the big holiday for Republic Day on its 5th day.
With the trade expecting Airlift to be Akshay Kumar’s biggest grosser, it’ll be interesting to track the day-wise progress of the film and see how it matches upto Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns vs Airlift Total Box Office Collections
At the end of Day 4, Airlift has collected Rs 54.7 crore, while Tanu Weds Manu Returns had collected Rs 47.05 crore. The difference is Rs 7.65 crore in favour of Airlift and the lead is expected to widen to around Rs 14 crore by the end of today. That’s a big lead to have and with no major ‘multiplex’ film releasing in the next couple of weeks, Airlift has every chance to beat Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
However, TWMR held up very strongly in Week 2. So it remains to be seen how Airlift performs after the big holiday on Tuesday.
Update 27 January 2016: Yesterday, the difference between the two films was Rs 7.65 crore. But after a huge Republic Day holiday, Airlift has now taken the difference between the two films to Rs 17.25 crore. The difference is pretty big now, which means, Airlift doesn’t even have to collect as much as Tanu Weds Manu Returns did in Week 2, to beat the film. A total of 150 crore plus looking more likely with each passing day for Airlift.
Update 29 January 2016: Things can change pretty quickly at the box office. The difference in collections has now narrowed down to Rs 13.48 crore, with Airlift continuing to lead. As you can see from the table below, Tanu Weds Manu Returns was rock solid on Wednesday and Thursday. The drop from Wednesday to Thursday for TWMR was 10%, while Airlift has fallen by nearly 17%. The second weekend will now decide if Airlift has any chance of crossing the 150 crore mark. TWMR collected 28.3 crore in its second weekend. Airlift would have to collect somewhere around the 25 crore mark to have a chance.
Update 31 January 2016: Airlift is still leading TWMR at the end of Day 9 at the box office, but the difference between the two films is now down to Rs 8.43 crore. At its peak, Airlift was ahead of TWMR by 17.25 crore. The difference on 2nd Saturday is a huge Rs 3 crore, which could be huge to the wider appeal of TWMR – a film that also performed well at single-screens. The trend suggests Airlift has little or no chance of beating the Kangana Ranaut starrer. The costs of the two films are similar, with Airlift being the slightly more expensive film.

Clash factor has shown little difference too because airlift was running with housefull capacity on Sunday nd If there would hve more screens nd shows then Sunday would hve touch 20 crs nd Tuesday would also . Fair point.

Most overrated movie of all time of overrated star of all time akshya kumar. Airlift is strictly average movie but i don’t mean it is bad movie but far better than many craps movies of akshya kumar like singh is bling, rawady rathod, housefull series etc……..
Why not compare DILWALE with TANU AND MANU RETURNS? Superstar and yet couldn’t beat by a big margin.
If all goes well then Airlift will do more than Agneepath and RR and will also do more than 150 CR . In terms of content Airlift deserves to do more than TWMR . TWMR is one of the Highest Grossing Movies of Bollywood and 4th Highest Grosser on Non Holiday {without EDX} . Today i expect huge numbers as today is a National Holiday so people will watch Airlift . Airlift Rocks !!!!!

My dear @indicine stop comparing TWM and Airlift the comparison are different. TWM is a universai appeal is also a complete Entertaiment film + sequel factor and Rom-Com while Airlift is a niche film with limited appeal. I believe one word of you for saying Akki is a big superstar. Why not to compare it with dilwale since they have same to same genre. Happy Republic Day

I seriously love these comparisons. Lets see who will win this one.Twmr had a positive wom but so does airlift. I personally feel it is unfair to compare them as one is a light hearted and fun film while the other is a realistic and patriotic film
@ISSA IBRAHIM – My top 5 rankings after 2016 :
1. Salman – He will win the clash if it happens. If it does not will give 1 more bb/atbb
2. Hrithik – I am sure there won’t be clash with Rustom. Even if there is a clash, will do 230+ safely with a clash in India and 100-150 in overseas. Without clash easily 400+ ww. His future pipeline looks exciting and so he will easily maintain his position
3. Akshay – Airlift : Critically acclaimed box office success (130+, Highest Jan grosser), HF3- 140-150, Rustom – with clash 80-85 crores (hit), without clash – 130+ (superhit). The good part is this will be Akki’s biggest year and he will get back where he deserves
4. Srk – After Dilwale, Fan will salvage his falling career to some extent in India but even with a good wom, will do 150 max, Raees – with clash (120), without clash (180-200). Still considerably less as Salman does 250+ with ease during Eid. Srk should bow out – He is not fit for Eid release. If he is thinking, he will repeat don vs jaaneman, not happening…this is a new salman
5. Aamir – Dangal will definetly have a clash as year progresses…Hera pheri 2 might be moved to that date, baahubali 2 is looking at xmas…it will not get a solo release…Plus his anti-India statements have not gone well with people…Pk was different..most people are liberal when it comes to religion but national sentiments is a diff thing…with clash – 150 crores (like dilwale), without – 180-200

To be honest, Airlift is not as great as everyone expected. After watching I found Baby was far superior than Airlift in terms of content. Airlift is neither a full fledged patriotic (there are some shades) movie but it is all about human relations !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! However I expect it to do 120+ crs Life time. Beating TWMR will be very tough but not impossible !!!!!!!!!!!!
Was waiting for this..checking boi every 15 mins but finally as they say sabra ka fal…so here is a big news boi expected today a growth of 30-60% and if it was at the above level i.e. 60% then movie will be huge nd will surpas jai ho week 1 but nw the growth has come and that too above the expected levels i.e above the upper limit of expectation i.e.70% somewhat like chappar phaad k…sheer unthinkable stuff..so this is what boi has to say…
Airlift looks set to go back to its Sunday levels on the holiday for Republic Day on Tuesday. The collections will be around 17 crore nett. The collections in mass circuits are at the same level and even a little higher at some centres and if this is repeated in the big city multiplexes then the total will be similar to Sunday. If the 17 crore nett materializes than it will be a huge 70% growth on the holiday,
This will take the business of the film close to 70 crore nett ensuring the highest first week collections for an Akshay Kumar starrer which at the moment is the 75 crore of Rowdy Rathore. The ticket rates will come down on Wednesday so it is actually more like a Monday for the film.
But with nearly 70 crore nett on the board already the film has chances to beat the first week total of Jai Ho (83.50 crore nett) which is the highest total recorded in Republic day week. Basically Airlift on course to beat last years Republic holiday release Baby (82 crore) in one week.
Airlift has come into its own expect alot of screens to be retained in week 2 no w expect a total close to 8-9cr tomorrow and week 1 shall be 85+ humongous indeed..2nd weekend will mean alot as it will decide how big the movie will be as it is going to be a big one as it is but howbig it can turn out to be..why are these nonsensical movies like kkhh3 and mastizaade releasing they are definitely eating/going to some chunk of business..but airlift shall come high with flying colors…expecting a 40cr week 2 min..as long as something drastic doesn happens..after week 2 the movie can be anywhere between 125-135 and then settle for a lyftym of around 160-165…giving it an atbb status or bb to the least..#Airlift

Watched the movie yesterday have to accept it is one of the finest movies to have released in recent times.Couldn’t control my emotions during the climax scene.Never for a moment did I feel bored or uninterested.Many critics have criticised the placing of songs but none of the songs seems forced(except dil de di maybe). Akshay has redeemed himself and has given the best performance of his career.It is commendable on his part to be part of a movie which lacks commercial value.It would be a shame if we consider akshay only to be an entertainer anymore.He has grown immensely in the past few years and his choices has been even more incredible
Airlift is making amends for Baby and Special 26.Both deserved a blockbuster status but because of the genre couldn’t collect much.
I am sure it will be remembered as a cult classic in the coming years and another 8+ Imdb rated movie for Akki
