Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Airlift make for a very interesting box office comparison. Tanu Weds Manu Returns had the franchise factor in its favour, while Airlift had Akshay Kumar’s star power which eventually helped the film take a bigger opening on Day 1. The clash factor didn’t make much difference because the target audience of Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 was completely different.
TWMR showed phenomenal growth, jumping by 50% on Day 2 at the box office. Airlift had lesser growth, but has the big holiday for Republic Day on its 5th day.
With the trade expecting Airlift to be Akshay Kumar’s biggest grosser, it’ll be interesting to track the day-wise progress of the film and see how it matches upto Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns vs Airlift Total Box Office Collections
At the end of Day 4, Airlift has collected Rs 54.7 crore, while Tanu Weds Manu Returns had collected Rs 47.05 crore. The difference is Rs 7.65 crore in favour of Airlift and the lead is expected to widen to around Rs 14 crore by the end of today. That’s a big lead to have and with no major ‘multiplex’ film releasing in the next couple of weeks, Airlift has every chance to beat Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
However, TWMR held up very strongly in Week 2. So it remains to be seen how Airlift performs after the big holiday on Tuesday.
Update 27 January 2016: Yesterday, the difference between the two films was Rs 7.65 crore. But after a huge Republic Day holiday, Airlift has now taken the difference between the two films to Rs 17.25 crore. The difference is pretty big now, which means, Airlift doesn’t even have to collect as much as Tanu Weds Manu Returns did in Week 2, to beat the film. A total of 150 crore plus looking more likely with each passing day for Airlift.
Update 29 January 2016: Things can change pretty quickly at the box office. The difference in collections has now narrowed down to Rs 13.48 crore, with Airlift continuing to lead. As you can see from the table below, Tanu Weds Manu Returns was rock solid on Wednesday and Thursday. The drop from Wednesday to Thursday for TWMR was 10%, while Airlift has fallen by nearly 17%. The second weekend will now decide if Airlift has any chance of crossing the 150 crore mark. TWMR collected 28.3 crore in its second weekend. Airlift would have to collect somewhere around the 25 crore mark to have a chance.
Update 31 January 2016: Airlift is still leading TWMR at the end of Day 9 at the box office, but the difference between the two films is now down to Rs 8.43 crore. At its peak, Airlift was ahead of TWMR by 17.25 crore. The difference on 2nd Saturday is a huge Rs 3 crore, which could be huge to the wider appeal of TWMR – a film that also performed well at single-screens. The trend suggests Airlift has little or no chance of beating the Kangana Ranaut starrer. The costs of the two films are similar, with Airlift being the slightly more expensive film.

Todays collection will give us a fair indication on where this film will end.
Anything above 8 cr will give it a great chance of crossing 150cr.
I think Airlift wont cross TWMR because It wont collect as much as TWMR collect maximum it will collect 35cr in best case also from third week Ghayal return will give tough fight and from this week it will face competetion from two small film so according to me in best case it will collect 145cr beyond that it is impossible….

Airlift got much better reviews than TWMR. So its lifetime collections should be much more than TWMR if Akki is really a bigger star than Kangna..

Their are some people who are considering this comparison fir determining status of akshay Kumar . they should know dilwale also failed to cross TWMR collection ;-)
People saying it only worked because of patriotic factor, I would like to say that I am a Pakistani and this is an awesome movie!!! It puts hollywood movie Argo to shame!!!! I would give it a 8/10..The only negatives are that they did not use real character’s name and the arabic translation(I am living in KSA so I know Arabic) was something that came out of google translation…Also, they should not have added a sleazy video of Dil Cheez Tujhe Dedi which would make parents not to come with their children…A couple more minor details here and there(I have never seen any school bus without the name of school written on it, yet they are travelling in a “School Bus” which does not belong to any school it seems) could have been improved if technical department did their research and this would have gotten a 9/10…This movie is achievement of humanity and not just indians..
And this movie is for both masses and classes, although it is promoted to only classes…
Indicine dont u think its a completelh niche movie..i mean baby hd more thrill n entertainment but still doing those collections r commendable..i mean even if does 125+its huge as jan is not that good month for release secondly each week 2-3 movies going to release with atleast some potential not just duds..plus the movie is plain simple i mean no masala whatsoever…pretty simple i mean no unnecessary suspense,twists etc..the movie doing well just on sheer star power,superb acting and due to the feel of indianness…hats off akki for making a movie lyk this and doing those gr8 collections…i mean would lyk to share a small story the day i was going to watch the movie a worker in my dads company asked me which movie i m going for..i said airlift..he replied is at an hollywood movie..i was literally lyk dafuq..but an english titlethus has an affect..giving no excuses as i dong need to as the movie has performed excedingly well…and tomorrow the movi will grow huge as its target audience flock to theatres during weekends so hopefor the best and a week 2 of 25-30 with all the competition n all..and a lyftym of around 130 my prediction

I don’t know where you found they used Google translation. . As I was shocked to see akshay speak pure arabic. its not google trabslation my brother .and Iraqi soldiers speaking In araqi accent.
The only problem was the Indian actor playing Iraqi soldiers tried his best to talk hindi in arabic accent but failed .
And about the school bus . This is government school bus my friend .ALL SAME UNIFIED for schools

@ indicine why are you comparing airlift with twmr, the genre of both is different, also twmr released in more sreens and was a solo release
I think the trade was expecting it to do 85-90…No one was expecting Airlift to do more including makers…Akki himself thought this won’t cross 100..If producers, trade, distributors, media everyone was expecting 85 or at max 90, how can anything above 100 be bad…In fact anything above 115-120 is like going 30 crores above expectations…that makes it superhit…if by chance it crosses 130 then it is blockbuster…movies verdict is dependent on the profits distributors make
It is also hit…Now this can go as far as block buster status
no doubt AIRLIFT was better than TWMR but TWMR was carrying extraordinary wom and AIRLIFT wom was not comparable with TWMR… TWMR 11th day was bigger than AIRLIFT’s 7th day that shows it All !!! another reason for the TWMR Mega success is the sequal factor !!! which we can not degradate !!!
But It was such a shame that Akshay is being compared with the likes of Kangana and young generation stars ?… but in reality he is way bigger star. Period ?? !!!
