Mohenjo Daro Trailer: Trade, Audience Response and IndicineFBO

One of the most anticipated trailers of the year was launched yesterday. There was no launch event or media interaction, but the makers decided to launch the trailer on the Star TV Network, followed by the internet (both at 8:57 PM yesterday).

The response, like every other ’much-awaited biggie’, was mixed. When the expectations are high, the chances of disappointing the audience is higher – and that seems to be the case with Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Mohenjo Daro too.

We asked 20 people in the trade (including theatre owners, distributors, trade veterans etc) for their feedback on the trailer. The response was mixed to negative – 5 of them said the trailer was ‘good’, 13 said it was average (under-whelming, disappointing, something missing were the words used) and the remaining 2 said poor. It needs to be pointed out that none of these people were in any which way associated with UTV, Hrithik Roshan or Ashutosh Gowariker. Opinions were from known and unbiased sources.

The audience response falls in mixed to good category. In our poll on Twitter, 36% people voted for ‘outstanding’, 20% voted for ‘good’, 25% voted for ‘average’ and 19% voted for ‘poor’. On Youtube, the percentage of people who have ‘liked’ the trailer is around 85% which is average. Usually, films that score 95% or more likes against dislikes is considered to be excellent, 90% or more is good, while anything less than 85% is average. (Read article: Trailer rating of 2016 films)

These are not the only two ways that we categorise the ‘audience response’. It’s a combination of many things which includes Twitter polls, Youtube likes vs dislikes ratio, feedback from real audience and even our own comments section (feedback from the known ‘neutral’ people is obviously given more importance).

For our own rating, we’d go with 7 on 10 for the trailer.

IndicineFBO: We start with 15.4 crore as the first day prediction for Mohenjo Daro. The film needed a strong trailer – which would’ve probably also made the makers of ‘Rustom’ think of averting a clash, but the response so far hasn’t really been overwhelmingly positive. Certainly not in the ‘Bajirao Mastani’ league, the trailer of which shifted the pre-release balance from a one-sided clash to an interesting one with Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale.

NOTE: The final IndicineFBO prediction is only made on the day before the release of the film (August 11th in Mohenjo Daro’s case). The FBO will change depending on the response to the music, song promos and other promotional activities. The music and the promos that follow will now be the key for Mohenjo Daro.

  • #Indicine

    Are u Craxy
You Given Hrithik Movie Trailer To 15.4 Crore Opening

Lets See You in 12 Aug It Must Be 25 Crore +

  • Excellent analysis indicine.

I found the trailer to be quite good though but read many mixed responses.

FBO seems fine too..though it can do 15-17crs with clash on day 1 I feel and Rustom should be around 10-11crs mark.

  • Mohenjodaro is kind of film which comes once in a decade.. please do not ruin it by spreading negativity. It will b a good story teller.

  • Im really disappointed by this prediction.I think first day collection Of MohenjoDaro will be around 24cr-26cr. Its for sure. Hrithik is coming after 2 years.

  • I have always Maintained that After Sultan,Mohanjo daro and Shivaay were my Most Awaited Movies.. I really Liked the 1st Teaser,Hrithink’s 1st look was Okayish and Actress’s 1st look was Bad.
I was Really waiting for am Movie,I did not want a Bahuballi like war Movie because i knew its not a war movie but the depiction of long last History made on a Budget of 100 Crs.. It will be Epic,Grand.VFX will be Top Notch and Story will be Intruging showing us the Start and End of that Civilisation.
What we got ? A Cliched Love Story.. A F***** Love Story.. Oh God where to Start only.
The Very 1st Shot in Trailer Puts you off. The overview of City is so Cartoonish that even Shaktimaan Looks Better.. They shud have built a Miniature set to give it an Authentic feel or used Good VFX.. VFX in whole Movie Looks very Bad.. City Looks Lifeless.. Costumes are so wrong.. Hrithik looks like he straight came out of Agneepath.. and his voice and Dialogue Deleivery is So trrible.. dont even ask about Pooja Hegde.. Kabir Bedi is Hugely Miscast..
And dont Even ask about Historical Inaccuracies .. no one Called it Mohanjo Daro.. That name was given by SIndhi in Last Century.. No one knows what it was Calles but Hrithik used Mohanjo daro like 50 times in Trailer..
Hugely Dissapointe.. Cudnt even watch Trailer More than 2 times..If that Exactly is the Movie then its Destined to be a Collossal Dissapointment.. Sad..

    • @Abhishek, Yes. Assumed screen count is 2800-3000 screens and we also factor in the number of shows. If a 3-screen multiplex runs 15 shows a day, then Mohenjo Daro might get 8-9 shows as compared to 6-7 for Rustom.

Quite easy to say ‘ghanta’, but we are not here to please fans with our predictions. We don’t claim that we’ll always be right either. Box office is unpredictable, we try our best to be as accurate as possible.

  • Agree with the assessment. The trailer indeed had something missing. It seems like an ordinary love story set in old times. Graphics looked good. Heroine is not that good. Hritik needs to pull this one on his shoulders.

  • totally agree with u at indicine.. love u for ur pure work…and unbiased reviews.. I salute you…

  • One thing is sure now.
Movie will be successful only if it will be good.
The neutral moviegoer will water for the reviews, then will decide to watch it or not.
If the movie turns out to be good, then it will do 200+ , if not up to the mark then, 125 crs will be difficult.
If the trailer had been good, then the opening would have been close to 20 crs.
For me first day will be 16 crs.

  • Indicine I Always Respect You But Triler Is just Mind Blowing

I Have Like Everything Of Trailer

You Want To See 10000 Bc Type Movie Kya

  • Don’t know what’s wrong with some HR fans, here and even on twitter they predict some unrealistic figures for his films which leads to haters trolling them.
May be they think coz Bang Bang opened to 25+ so Mjd should definitely do 25+.

But hey,Bang bang did that much on a national holiday,so did agneepath on its opening day. And both those films were much more commercially appealing than MJD and had popular music too.

Dilwale which had huge buzz did 21crs on clash with BM and it was a masala film which open huge at single screens.

So I don’t see anything wrong with indicine’s FBO keeping in mind all these things .

  • but this prediction is too low afterall hritik is coming back after 22 months his fans r dying to watch him in big screen

  • A mixed reaction may make the Rustom makers feel more confident now. All eyes now on the Rustom trailer. If it is appreciated more then things will get very interesting.

15.4 cr does not look a good enough start to me for such a big budget movie. Dilwale had done around 22 cr on day 1. I think MD should be targeting at least 20 cr as it has to recover its huge budget.

  • I used to like this site a lot before, but after reading this biased article, I must say that Indicine only writes good things about the three Khans. You people are no different from “koimoi” – who are also extremely biased and are true Khans’ slaves.

Now, compare the trailer of MD with Sultan and tell me how is it inferior? Is Sultan oscar material for you people? I think so!

    Shame on you people!

  • Disappointed with the article and prediction.. but will respect your analysis @indicine

It makes sense too.. no point dreaming of big numbers. Even during Christmas last year.. Diwale did 21 cr on Day 1 with clash. It was much more commercial. This looks like a realistic prediction.

@Babaji.. can’t believe Akki fans are talking about unrealistic figures. Hahaha. Go and check prediction of Akki fans for any movies in the last 4 years.. everything has been more than 20 and 25-30 for Housefull 3. I remember even reading 25 crore for Boss opening.. Hahaha..

Atleast Hrithik has given several 20 plus opening.

  • Indicine I hope you will post my comment…I think I can express in hindi better
I don’t know why people are comparing this with Bahubali….Bahubali was good but there were numerous mistakes in the movie…kaafj mistakes tou logo ko pta hi chal gya hoga pr shayad ispe kisi ne dhyaan na diya ho…
Shiva k paas itni power thi ki wo bhallaldev ki statue ka weight akele le sakta tha…shivling ukhad sakta tha…but jo raasta uske maata pita ne band kr diya tha rock se use hta k upr nai ja sakta tha…kalabazi dikha k upr jaana zaruri tha….and people call it a masterpiece..lol

  • The only logical negative point I found is the vfx(I didn’t find any). But as the movie is still in post production ans there’s still 50 more days to the release, I think it’ll be enough for the makers to rectify the vfx errors(if there’s any). Right indicine?
