Ghajini Movie Review
Ahh.. The biggest movie of the year is finally here. Aamir Khan’s Ghajini brings with it the huge amount of expectations that people usually carry with them to the theatre while watching an Aamir Khan film. The full house go crazy while Aamir first appears on screen, the craze is mind boggling something that I haven’t witnessed since I started watching movies a decade and a half ago.
Sanjay Singhania is a business tycoon, who has very recently come down to India. Due to certain weird circumstances, he falls in love with Kalpana (Asin), a sweet lovable girl with a heart of gold. While Sanjay is on a business trip, Kalpana in an attempt to save girls from some dreaded criminals puts her life at risk. On the day of Sanjay’s return, Kalpana is killed by Ghajini while Sanjay is injured on his head. This leads to a mental disorder called anterograde amnesia. Sanjay suffers from short term memory loss; he forgets everything in 15 mins! His only goal though is to kill Ghajini, how he battles against all odds is what forms the rest of the tale.
Ghajini Hindi Review
Your first reaction after watching Ghajini is WOW What a movie!! You look at your watch to realize 3 hours have breezed through. You catch hold of your breathe and come to terms with a movie that has just managed to blow you away. It aint a movie that you would remember and want to watch 5 years from now, in fact it lacks repeat value as the thrill would be missing the second time. But what Aamir Khan and the Ghajini team have served is a fulto masala entertainer. It has comedy, romance, action, a typical 90s villian, great music, emotions.. Ghajini has got it all.
There are so many memorable moments and scenes in Ghajini. To describe a few..
1) When Aamir is chasing the cop and Jiah, he suddenly loses his memory. Yet tries to recognise Jiah by her rapid breathe rate.
2) The Aamir – Asin love story. He’s a business tycoon; she’s a pretty ordinary girl. The way their love story begins is sweet and extremely funny!
3) The villian! Neck and fingers filled with gold jewellery, a silver tooth, menacing look et al. Ghajini is a typical 90s villian. Almost perfect for a revenge movie. The most surprising thing was, the movie has been named after the villian, which usually isnt the case with Bollywood movies. Has a movie ever been titled, inspired by the character of a non-star villian?
4) The climax! Scintillating stuff. It seems quite easy to predict, what could happen next. But the short term memory loss makes the movie quite unpredictable.
A.R. Murugadoss directing his first Bollywood film deserves credit for his brilliant execution of the script. The climax of the Hindi version is different, if compared to the original in Tamil. The brilliant camera work and fantastic background score is one of the many other positives.
So is it too violent? The answer is No, it isn’t a very violent movie. Apart from certain scenes like the tattoos being scratched off from Aamir’s chest – abdomen and a few physical fights resulting in twisting of necks, the violence is limited to about 15 mins. Far less brutal than the CCTV captures of the Mumbai terrorist attacks that was aired on almost all news channels.
Any flaws? Yes, the songs. About 2 songs too many in the first half; Behka Main and Aye Bachchu were unnecessary.
The performances were top notch. Asin proves to be a very good actress, quite unexpected as I wasn’t expecting much from her, after those promos. Good screen presence, bubbly and charismatic.
Aamir Khan is brilliant! An actor who can never disappoint, neither with his performances nor the overall quality of his movies. He is by far the best star-actor of the decade. What with a different variety of movies like Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par and now Ghajini! All very different, but brilliant nonetheless!
Overall, Ghajini is a must watch, a complete paisa vasool entertainer. A movie that should be experienced only on the big screen. Lastly, watch it for Aamir Khan and his sheer brilliance on screen. He is to Bollywood, what Sachin Tendulkar is to cricket. A legend!
Rating:

Other Notes – The atmosphere in the movie hall was electrifying, something that I have never witnessed. Going by the audience reaction, the movie seems to have lived upto the expectations. People were glued to their seats till the very end.
Hope you all enjoy Ghajini. Post your Ghajini reviews below. Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year from the Indicine Team!
Update – What Aamir Khan expected actually happened. In an interview, he mentioned that if people walk out with his physique and 8 pack abs in mind, then the movie has failed to connect. So yeah, the movie did connect and Aamir’s looked great in Ghajini. In all the excitement, I missed Jiah Khan too, it was a forgettable performance. Her most important scene was when Aamir gets down from the scooter to fight the goons, Jiah’s expressions while trying to stop Aamir was hard to digest!

Medical students are serious people! What a joke! They never dance? Gosh, bring this to my hospital madam, they’ll laugh on your face. Please check on what you say. That was one of the biggest jokes I’ve heard all year! We don’t dance and we’re bloody serious it seems! Wow. Please don’t cast us medical fraternity as boring duds! We do everything everyone else does to!

Indicine Team: I think I am so important on this website! do u know why?! Because some people never observe any negative comments about Ghaajini or SIK or JTYJN or Golmaal posted by others except mine.. me as a commentator!! Wow.. so that’s a credit for me.. peope like Raj, Yamini and some others, all these guys never feel bad about other peoples’ comments.. so why?! And what does this mean?! Means that I think right and my comments are convincing for people, would let people “think” therefore these people want to kick me out from this website but unfortunately, they’re unable to do it! I wonder why can’t they kick me out?! For just one reason I assume.. it’s my right to express my opinions about movies and actors, and I’m not using bad language, I respect all the celebrities.. I don’t say bad stuff.. but they do.. yes they do and did it many times.. abused celebrities many times.. so they are the people who must be (banned) from posting their comments, whether these people are indians, western, arabs, persian, whoever.. which country you belong to isn’t the problem.. which religion u beleive in isn’t a problem either.. but the problem is the “bad intentions” the “bad lanugage” which some people use and hurt others!
So Indicine Team: Do u think these people have (all the rights) to ask u from time to time to stop me posting my comments?!
And Indicine Team: Why don’t u have some terms and conditions for posting comments on this website?! Means people who disrespect others.. direspect celebrities.. say very bad words must be banned.

@FAthiya
Jiya Khan was a medical student.. how a medical student would dance on a stage in one scene in the movie?! That’s not convincing too coz medical students always serious people, they never dance in parties or on stages, as far as I know!

i want some comments by the indicine team about the very apparent south indian movie touches as noted by some other viewers on the website.. i too feel that in a hindi movie it is not required … the action scenes and the fights shown in south indian are very long and elaborate .ditto heree ..the main heroine is always either too dumb or too sweet compare nagma of kadalan and asin here.. the background score yes just like in mani ratnams bombay uses flute here very audible in the first 15 mts..
what im trying to say is that when hindi movies take up south indian touches like a lungi wearing vinodkhanna in dayavaan they do not gel with the hindi speaking people .. this is my observation .aand not a remark on our south indian makers ability and their talent but i feel hindi movies can do without these instances .. i also felt the same south indian effect while watching guru
in fact if you were to watch 80s film now you would see the wig wearing jeetendra ala NTR WHICH appears funny to us
i wonder why mr perfectionist missed all this and didnt bother to tone down the sweetness of the heroine and her facial expressions which were too typical ofa southie ..ok it is a south remake but its ahindi film now !!! all these and many more instances reminded you that you were watching a tamil movie dubbed in hindi…oh .its only so much that i ca n digest!!!
sourish: (December 31, 2008 at 9:35 am)
saw ghajini yesterde… gud movie…
bt i guess the south indian touch shud hv been removed… the fight scenes r total copy of tollywood… specially the villain flying in mid air when hit by amir… the movie is above average 4 me…
Fathiya: y can’t medical students dance in parties n functions… aftr all de r human beings… where do u live… medical students at yor place don’t hv legs i guess… don’t ask such foolish questions…
Fathiya: (December 31, 2008 at 12:32 pm)
Sourish: No.. dear.. I’m not crazy ( and mind your language please) I know lots of people who are doctors whether they are male or female.. they never dance in parties or stages as they “respect” themselves and their positions as doctors. So if they “allow” themselves to dance on stages to entertain people, so they downgrade themselves as doctors.. that’s a common thing which everyone knows in this world.. if u don’t know dear Sourish! and whether doctors were born in Est or West, they are with the same manner.
So medical students are also the same, have u ever watched doctors in any hollywood or bollywood movies are dancing on stages?! Never.. and if u don’t know the difference between a drum composer, a singer or a dancer and between people who are in some higer positions e.g. doctors, authers, ambassadors, ministers. so that’s not my problem.. it’s yours ( as if u don’t know the difference between a prostitute and a decent woman.. both have legs and hands but each of them belong to a different society and a different profession)!

Indicine Team:
That’s true.. what u have mentioned, that there are zillions of flaws in every movie we watch, and I think that u finally agreed that there are flaws even in the biggest bollywood movies which we saw e.g. KKKG but in the past, while we were discussing some movies which weren’t successful at the box office, and I found them good movies, u were pointing to some minor flaws as the main reason for the flop! and which I didn’t agree for, and I was trying to convince everyone that the flaws were minor which never affect any good movie and that there must’ve been some other reasons for the flop. e.g. Umrao Jaan, the remake.. the movie didn’t lack anything.. and the main reason for the flop was “the audience” didn’t accept the remake of the original and didn’t go to watch it as I heard everyone was saying, noone went to watch it!
Indicine Team:
You said that RBNDJ is strictly average movie.. I don’t agree with what u hv mentioned.. this movie is one of the movies which will stick in our mind for ever.. for me it’s a much better movie than DDLJ and it’s a movie which I want to watch it again and again as many people really do.. my niece saw it 3 times at the cinema and she still wants to watch it, she watched lots of indians movies but I never saw her loving a movie this way!
Ghaajini was a good movie, I loved it and I think I will watch it again after sometimes dispite some flaws which I mentioned in my earlier comment.
Aryan:
I agree with you as I was also surprised to see some kids came with their parents to watch Ghaajini, but what I really think that these families didn’t take their kids to watch this specific movie, but probably they’ve no maids or someone to look after them in their absenece.. can’t leave them home alone.
But believe it.. I was laughing at the action scenes in the last 15 minutes of the movies.. and these kids were laughing too! burst into laughter.. kids also know what’s a good action and what’s not!!

Ok, Miss Fathiya, I’m a medical student. And I can answer this one for you. Medical people you know must be the rare variety. In our hospital, we have dance and arts festivals. And yes, we dance sing and everything else. So do our staff. So do people from many many other medical colleges. We have inter-college meets to prove the point. It IS NOT BENEATH THE DIGNITY OF A DOCTOR TO DANCE ON STAGE OR OFF STAGE. There is nothing wrong with it by any standards. I don’t know from where you got this notion that we don’t dance. I can give you hours n hours n hours n hours n days n months of video footage from the hundreds of medical colleges across India proving my point. So don’t make silly conclusions. An advice for you miss Fathiya, you seem to be an ok person but perhaps stop being too argumentative. Learn the art of silence. Say what you think and stay in your place. Let anyone else tell their opinion. Don’t try to impose your opinion on other people. I say you are a little too childish too. Grow up. There’re a billion different opinions in this world. Accept it. Live with it. Grow up.

@Fathiya: First things first- in your country dancing n other forms of entertainment may be considered as low grade activities n compared wid prostitution n all… it’s not the case in india…
dancing doesn’t degrades anybodies position in the society… my sis is a medical student n yes she dances… wen at parties… sumtimes even better dan regular party animals… haven’t u ever been to any medical clg fest… if not den its yor problem… plz change yor degraded mind set b4 u c the next movie…

@Fathiya
U r the stupidest SRK fan! There are no faults in ghajni so u r finding faults with name of the movie and saying the most foolish comment doctors wont dancE!!Have u ever seen a medical college ,They dance drink and do even more! And about the name The movie is all after the revenge of Sanja Sinhania towards Ghajini his only motive is to kill ghajini! And all the rest (Love and all) are past and presenlty the movie is the revenge against Ghajini and with out ghajini will this Revenge or the movie happen? Also we can see the marketing brilliance of Aamir Khan in putting the name Ghajini to attract the Tamil Audience(As it is a Tamil Remake). So stop ur foolish coments and get the hell outa here!
Fathiya: (January 1, 2009 at 12:42 am)
Indicine Team: I didn’t say that doctors (can’t) dance!! I said according to their positions as doctors can’t dance on stages.. I meant to say: Doctors can’t participate in some shows and dance on stages.. that’s what I meant because Jiya Khan wasn’t dancing with her friends at a party.. but on a stage.. she had a show!
If it’s normal for your doctors to dance on stages or at parties and they don’t mind it.. I don’t know.. I’m not living in India, but I never saw doctors dancing neither in our society in East nor in any hollywood or bollywood movies except in Ghajini! I too have doctors in our family, one is a man, and the other one is a woman.. they never do it.. they find it wrong, embarrassing.
If doctors dance with their family at home, with their friends, at their family weddings, nothing wrong with that, we too dance.. I dance with kids at home, play for them songs and dance with them.. I dance in my room while listening to some songs and as a workout.. but.. do I dance in public, infront of other people? No.. do I dance at weddings? No.. if I would dance at a wedding, it has to be for someone who’s very close, like my daughter’s wedding, my sister or a causin but not for everyone, and.. do we dance on stages?never..because dancing on stages means u want to entertain people, dancing for people only and not for yourself, not to entertain yourself.. so how can we believe that (doctors) who are in some respected positions would agree to do it?!
Fathiya: (January 1, 2009 at 1:16 am)
By the way.. a week ago, I read in Masala Website that Saif Ali Khan tried to stop Karina from dancing at some weddings ( not family weddings but other people’s wedding) and the reason was that her dancing at other people’s wedding was an embarrassment for her family as she’s a celebrity and they didn’t agree for it.
So.. is dancing considered as a crime?! No ofcourse.. Saif dances on stages at some functions, awards functions.. Karina does too.. but (dancing at some people’s wedding) is different, is wrong.
And I think doctors dance on stages.. is wrong too.
Stanley Johnson: (January 1, 2009 at 2:18 am)
Fathiya! Notice carefully. It was a college fest. College programme. And there is nothing wrong with doctors dancing. Lord. Didn’t know you were not from India. So you think movies reflect the entire reality? Doctors dance in the US and UK too. India, and other countries too. Are you from some Stone Age country? Fine. You think its wrong, good for you. I’ve been to many places stayed there long enough to learn bout people there. The best place I’ve been to is Dubai(its safer than India for Christians, personal experience!). I lived there for 18 years. The worst was Saudi Arabia(not even their locals are safe!). You from some place like that? That’d explain your mindset. Maybe Pakistan. But I thought there were not as conservative as those Saudis who are like from another dimension. Just past evolution.

Yamini –
You are right. Fathiya has a childish attitude. She is very argumentative each and every time she makes a comment. And her views are very subjective.
Indicine team – please ban this women from here, and spare us all the torture and her nonsense attitude and childish comments.
Ghajini – the film is very well made. Its a good film, not a great film, but a good film. It captivates you and is rivetting. It keeps you glued to the edge of your seat. Aamir khans performance as the shaven headed killer is awesome. But his performance as the normal character is strictly average. Asin does ok, and brings a certain charm to the character. Nothing special though.
Those who like romantic or family entertainers, this isn’t the film for you. It definately isn’t a film you can watch with your entire family and children. It is a man’s film just like ajay ny has said above.if you like action and revenge films, this is the best action/revenge film you will ever see. It is a far better made film than rab ne bana de jodi. So it is worth a watch. The film has ‘awesome’ written all over it.
I personally liked the film, and it was much better than some of the recent releases. I wouldn’t say it is the best film of 2008 though. But it is definately worth watching.for those of you who say the film is crap and will be a flop, should eat your own words. Because the film has taken the biggest opening and the biggest first week earnings ever in bollywood history. Beating every other film, such as singh is king, om shanti om, dhoom 2, rab ne bana de jodi etc. In fact the first week takings are so high and mind boggling that it will be very difficult for another film to beat the record set by ghajini in many years to come.
Ghajini is also on its way to becoming indias first ever film that crosses the 100 crore mark in terms of its net earnings. No other film has ever achieved that. If this happens, which is likely, then ghajini will become the biggest hit in indian cinema history, beating all shah rukh khan films and every other film including sholay.this will be a history making event, and i cannot see any other film being able to beat that record for many years to come. Surely then, aamir khan must be classed as the number 1 actor in bollywood and beat shah rukh to the no 1 slot ?
Whether you like ghajini or not, and i know audience opinions are divided, ghajini has become the biggest hit in indian cinema history. Such is the star power of aamir khan.
Quite frankly i dont think chandni chowk to china will even come anywhere near to the level of business ghajini has done so far.
I have a feeling cc2c will be a turkey and a huge dissapointment. We shal wait and see.
Just to let you know, the first 3 days i went to the cinema to see ghajini, the tickets where completely sold out. I saw it on the 4th day. Managed to get there early. But that show was also a sell out. I can’t remember in recent memory in london, a bollywood film being sold out 4 days in a row, not even a shah rukh khan film has done that. And if i hear from my friends, the film is still selling out even now on its 6th day. That is unbeleivable.
