Box Office Predictions of 2014 Bollywood films: Part 1

Note: Predictions are just ‘expected numbers’ based on star cast, director and production house.

Jai Ho (Jan 24): Salman Khan has taken up the Republic Day weekend by getting his film Jai Ho to release on 24th January. It is the remake of a well accepted South Indian film called Stalin and should continue Salman’s winning streak even though the trailers have not differentiated it much from his last few films. While the film is unlikely to break the records set by Dhoom 3, it should cross the collections of Salman’s last film Dabangg 2. Box Office Prediction: 180 crore.

Gunday (Feb 14): Ranveer Singh got into the big league with the huge success of Ram Leela. This time around, he is back with his mentors Yash Raj Films in this 1970s based action drama which is set in the coalfields of West Bengal. The trailers of the film have highlighted the friendship and the confrontation which happens between them towards the end of the film. Priyanka Chopra adds to the glamour quotient of this film. We expect the film to do above average business. Box Office Prediction: 75 crore.

Jagga Jasoos (Oct 2): Barfi which arrived in 2012 surprised everyone with its box office performance. The team of Ranbir Kapoor, UTV and Anurag Basu reunite in this detective coming-of-age comic thriller. The film is expected to hit all the right notes with audiences universally and the music has been receiving a lot of pre-release buzz from industry insiders. Barfi’s success surprised us but the performance of Jagga Jasoos would be anything but surprising for us. Prediction: 175 crore.

PK (December): Rajkumar Hirani is the most well respected director in India today and the last time he teamed up with Aamir Khan, that film broke all records of that time. Although not much is known about the content of this film, it can be safely said that it will follow the feel good template of Hirani’s previous films. The release date and the screen size of the film will see it challenge the records set by Dhoom 3. Another blockbuster in store for Aamir Khan. The film is scheduled to release during the Post-IPL period, but could be postponed to Christmas 2014 if Aamir is not completely satisfied with the rough cut. Box Office Prediction: 275 – 300 crore.

Holiday (June 5): AR Murugadoss returns to direct a Hindi film after 6 years since Ghajini with this Akshay Kumar starrer that is a remake of his own film Thupakki. The original film proved to be a big hit commercially and Holiday should at the very least cross the collections of Akshay’s last few films. However it clashes with Ajay Devgn’s Action Jackson at the box office and if the clash does take place it will curtail the collections of Holiday. The film also releases during the IPL. Prediction with clash: 85 crore. Prediction without clash: 125 crore.

Ungli (Uncertain): Not much is currently known about Ungli except for the cast and the production house. Emraan Hashmi who has been concentrating on his Hollywood film for quite some time will be back in Hindi film territory with Ungli which also stars Sanjay Dutt, Randeep Hooda and Kangna Ranaut. Predicting the box office collection of a film without any knowledge about the film’s content is a very difficult proposition but we will take it up anyway. Prediction: 55 crore.

Haider (2nd half 2014): Shahid Kapoor got the biggest grosser of his career towards the end of 2013 with R… Rajkumar and 2014 will see him starring in Vishal Bharadwaj’s Haider. The actor-director duo previously made Kaminey which did above average business at the box office back in 2009. Haider is based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet and stars Shraddha Kapoor opposite Shahid. As it is not a very commercial film which will appeal to audiences universally, the box office returns should be limited.
Prediction: 60 crore.

Kill Dil (Sep 5): Shaad Ali returns to direct a film after his debacle of a film called Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Like that film, this also has been produced by Yash Raj Films and stars Parineeti Chopra, Ranveer Singh, and Ali Zafar in the lead roles. It promises to be an unusual comedy thriler going by the snippets we have received about the film. We expect Shaad to get back into the green zone with Kill Dil.
Prediction: 70 crore.

2 States (Apr 18): We’ve been hearing great things about this Karan Johar – Sajid Nadiadwala collaboration. The film is based on Chetan Bhagat’s 2009 novel 2 States: The Story of my marriage, which was a smash-hit with the youth. Directed by Abhishek Varman, the film is a story of a couple from different states in India. Even if the book is half as spicy and entertaining as the book was, 2 States should go on to be hugely successful commercial blockbuster. Prediction: 75 crore

  • I think Holiday will collect in excess of 150crs and clash will not happen bcoz akki and ajay are friends…

  • My box office predictions for some films in 2014:-

    1. Salman Khan
    a. Jai Ho : 135 crores
    b. Kick : 165 crores
The above 2 films cannot be directly predicted based on the performance of the south originals. The taste of south audience is different from the north audience. The masala genre is strong in south but in north it is losing appeal now because of overdose of such films. But both films are holiday releases so should get some initial benefit. And if there is good emotional and family content then collections can be much more. Right now only entertainment for the masses can be expected.

    2. Shah Rukh Khan
    a. Happy New Year : 250 crores
Musical thriller heist film. This genre-combo will work best on good thrills and chartbuster music. This kind of film appeals to both classes and masses. The multi-starcast is added bonus. Not sure about content but music of Farah Khan’s films have been chartbusters (so similar expectations).
    b. Fan — 130 crores
Maneesh Sharma directed romantic film (Band Baaja Baarat, Shuddh Desi Romance) and YRF production. SRK and YRF can take it to 100 crores but nothing except content will take it much further.

    3. Aamir Khan
    a. PK : 250 crores
Aamir-Hirani combo gave 3 Idiots. But can they repeat it again? Raju Hirani films are always super-strong in content and Aamir is also a perfectionist when it comes to scripts. So as far as content is concerned, we can rest assured that it will be good. Only problem is this film is a satire on religion and godmen so it may get involved in political and legal controversies. And it is doubtful how much it will appeal to the masses (class audience will like such satirical films). Good supporting cast with Anushka Sharma, Boman Irani and Sushant Singh Rajput. And I read somewhere Aamir plays an alien. Interesting.

    4. Hrithik Roshan
    a. Bang Bang : 150 crores
Spy film with top list actors Hrithik and Katrina. Just hope it is not another Agent Vinod since the orignal Tom Cruise starrer (Knight and Day) got poor reception. But if there are good action sequences and the film is made to Indian audiences liking it will be a run away hit.

    5. Akshay Kumar
    a. Holiday : 150 crores
If this film is anywhere as good as the Tamil Thuppakki , nothing can stop it from making 200 crores. Should be Akshay’s highest grosser. But its collections will be affected by Action Jackson and The Amazing-Spider-Man 2.
    b. It’s Entertainment : 70 crores
Seems like one of the usual Akshay Kumar’s comedies like Housefull. Sandwiched between biggies Kick and Singham 2. Nothing but good content can save this film.
    c. Gabbar : 100 crores
Remake of Murugadoss tamil film Ramanna. Huge critically-acclaimed blockbuster in south. So good word of mouth like Special 26 and Oh My God can be expected if the content is good as original. But Akshay should stop releasing more than 2 films a year as it leads to viewer fatigue.

    6. Ajay Devgn
    a. Action Jackson : 70 crores
Prabhu Dheva film so masses will love it. But clashing with highly-awaited Holiday and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Not much going for it. Content can be the only saviour.
    b. Singham 2 : 150 crores
Ajay-Rohit combo. Among the top 5 most awaited films of the year. Holiday release. Biggest commercial director today — Rohit Shetty. Box Office dhamaka. Only terrible (not even bad) content can stop this film.

    7. Ranbir Kapoor
    a. Roy : 60 crores
Thriller film. Not much is known about it. Stars Arjun Rampal and Jacqueline alongside Ranbir.
    b. Jagga Jasoos : 130 crores
Ranbir — Katrina starrer. Entertaining content will be the key to success.
    c. Bombay Velvet : 90 crores
Anurag Kashyap film set in 1950. Off-beat film with Ranbir and Anushka; Karan Johar in special cameo. Might clash with SRK’s ‘Fan’ during Christmas.

    8. Saif Ali Khan
    a. Happy Ending : 40 crores
Romantic comedy multi-starrer film with Saif, Govinda, Preity Zinta, Ranvir Shorey, Ileana D’Cruz, Kalki Koechlin and Kareena (cameo).
    b. Humshakals : 60 crores
Sajid Khan film. Means content = ZERO. Stars Saif, Ram Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh.
    c. Phantom : 100 crores
26/11 based anti-terrorism film directed by Kabir Khan. Stars Saif and Katrina. Kabir Khan films have good action and content so this film might be Saif’s much needed hit.

  • If Jai ho collects 180cr as predicted, salman fans should be very happy..coz jai ho doesn’t have good actress, music, promos..

  • The top 10 grossers of 2014 will be
    1. Happy New Year
    2. PK
    3. Holiday
    4. Kick
    5. Fan
    6. Singham 2
    7. Phantom
    8. Jagga Jasoos
    9. Jai Ho
    10. Bombay Velvet
The sad news is Bang Bang has been postponed to 2015. But if it does release on 2nd Oct 2014, replace Phantom with Bang Bang.

  • Acc. to IMDB
    P.k summary:
A man has a chance to encounter a prostitute which changes his opinion on his religion and beliefs.

    Looks interesting..

  • I am waiting for 2 movies mainly viz bang bang and pk.
But will go for HNY and bombey velvet if review comes good.

  • @babaji ka thullu – Where did you read that? The film storyline revolves around a dance competition and a heist. How can there be no songs then? Also Prabhu Deva has done a dance for the film and dance pics from the sets are out on the net. Infact a song named Indiawaale has been confirmed by the makers. Farah Khan is a choreographer and her own film won’t have songs? Not possible.

  • @indicine:175 crores for jagga jasoos? ?how come? ?
Bang bang release date is 2nd october.it will be affected by the clash.
Though there is no confirmation yet.
But bang bang will release on 2nd oct.

  • 200cr+ grossing movies (expected)
    PK
    Happy New Year
    Bang Bang

    150cr+ grossing movies (expected)
    Holiday
    Kick
    Jai Ho
    Singham 2
    Jagga jasoos

    100cr grossing movies (expected)
    Action jackson
    Fan
    Gunday
    Humshakals
    Bombay Velvet

  • When will KICK release,if Its entertainment releases on EID weekend and Singham 2 releases on independence day …?

Some movies are sure to be postponed to 2015

  • @Sakhi can’t u read above that the predictions r only for part 1 while your sequel of cash comes in part 2.

  • P.K. all the way, if movie is half good as 3I then sky is the limit.. but its collection will be slightly affected due to non-holiday period, i think it will collect more than 275cr+ for sure, might open the 300cr club.

The curiosity for P.k. is superb, Indicine and BH voting polls suggest that it is the most awaited movie of the year, Talaash won the poll in 2012 for most awaited flick as first it was slated to release on 01st Jun but it was later postponed and released on 30th nov,2012. The two movies are different but postponement will definitely affect the buzz of any movie so I hope PK isn’t.

From last 3 years BH site Aamir tops the polls with Talaash – 2012, Dhoom 3 – 2013 & P.K.-2014

apart of P.K. i am interested in movies Kick,Jai Ho & Singham 2 the most, while movies like Gunday, Highway are looking solid and will surprise for sure.

Bang Bang,Jagga Jassos & Bombay velvet buzz and excitement will depend when on their respective trailers and music.

At last HNY – if the reports for the movie is as good as CE then I will watch it for sure.

  • P.K. All the way !!!
I know only Aamir can make a film like Taare. But let us assume he did not make it (dream on!). What would the film have been like?

    If Karan Johar made Taare
    Obvious starcast:
Shah Rukh Khan as the arts teacher (duh duh duh!!).
Aryan Khan as the dyslexic child (even if he could not act for nuts).
Rani Mukerjee as the kid’s mom (assuming Kajol is unavailable).
Abhishek Bachchan as the kid’s dad.
Amitabh Bachchan as the school principal (who cares if the role is ultra minute, he can afford it).
It would be shot in New York to appeal to the NRI audience.
The story line would obviously be different. SRK would fall for the dyslexic kid’s mom. The last scene would have the mom running to the teacher rather than the kid. And again, like in so many other movies, SRK would get someone else’s girl.
It would have one dance number.
The film would be titled ‘Kuch Taare Zameen Par.’

If Sanjay Leela Bhansali made Taare
    Obvious starcast:
    Salman as the teacher.
    Rani as the mother.
Of course the whole film would be shot on elaborate sets. The school would be nothing short of Harvard university.
An orchestra would play every time anyone cried.
Slow motion, different camera angles for every scene.
The school uniforms would match the classroom walls even though that does not make a f***ing difference.
The film would cost 60 crores.

    If Farah Khan made Taare
    Obvious starcast:
    SRK as the teacher (yawn).
In the original Taare, Aamir makes an entry at the interval point. In Farah’s version, SRK would be on screen on for 2.30 hrs out of the 2.45 hrs and would be introduced in the first scene itself.
The story would be changed to make sure the above happened. The focus of the film would be a teacher who helps a kid fight dyslexia.
To make it a complete entertainer, there would be a romantic angle, comedy, and action thrown in. Oh idea!! Nikumbh’s character likes another teacher and the kiddo helps him.. throw in some comedy moments there and you have romance and comedy settled. For action.. hmm.. lemme see.. oh yah, the kid gets kidnapped and the teacher fights the baddies to save him. Wow!! I’m quite an imaginative writer. I can see how Farah can write a film from scratch in two weeks straight.
The film posters would have a big SRK with the tiny image of the kid in the background.

    If Rakesh Roshan made Taare
    Obvious starcast:
    Hrithik Roshan as the teacher.
Since Rakesh Roshan cannot think beyond science fiction these days, this film would have that too. Instead of dyslexia, the kid would have alienositis or something, a condition induced due to him witnessing an alien abduction.
Instead of Nikumbh being an arts teacher, he would be a physics teacher, and instead of asking kids to be creative, he would ask them to challenge the science we know.
In the scene where Nikumbh asks the kids to open their minds and make whatever they want outdoors, the kid Ishaan, instead of making a boat, would end up making a working spaceship prototype.
Nikumbh would cure the kids problem by making a full fledged version of the kid’s prototype, traveling to the alien planet, and asking them to give the kid his powers back.
The film would have music by Rajesh Roshan ripped off from some world music.
The film’s name would again start with a K.. probably ‘Kuch Aliens Taaron se Zameen Par’.
The director would make sure Hrithik gets to show all his abilities. This would mean a scene with Roshan jr flexing his muscles, and a dance competition in the end, instead of an arts competition.

    If Priyadarshan made Taare:
    Obvious starcast:
    Akshay Kumar as the teacher.
Paresh Rawal as the kid’s dad.
It would be a brainless comedy. The kid’s dyslexia would be made fun of. Half the times the parents will be running after the kid from one room to the other and that, in the director’s opinion, would be funny.
The film will be full of sex jokes. So for example, when Akshay would come to the parents telling them that their son has dyslexia, the ignorant father would say something inappropriate like ‘iss umar mein? par kaise, woh to hamesha boys school mein padha hai!’. And yes, the director would think it is funny.
In the climax of the film all the characters in the film would run around in the amphitheater for no reason, spilling colors on each other. That’s where the film will end, without any logical conclusion.
And of course, Paresh Rawal would emote like an epileptic himself making us question the boy’s mental abilities anyway.

P.S- i know its not related to topic but as i get this from my friend so want to update, don’t take as a insult of any actor/director.

  • @indicine
How come u gave 75cr to 2 states wen it stars newbies such as Arjun kapoor and Alia.. They don’t hav the following of their own yet!
    N u gav HAIDER 60cr??
Jz coz it’s based on a book which is very famous that’s y u thnk 2 states will be hugely successful, then haider should net atleast 100cr coz it’s a adaptation of one of the most popular plays in the world!
So I thnk HAIDER should atleast be 80cr coz shahid has a fan following of his own and also hugely popular hamlet!

    • @Shahid-SRK, no Vishal Bhardwaj movie has gone on to be a big hit. Shahid might have a fan-following, but apart from Prabhu Deva’s R Rajkumar none of his films have crossed 50 crore.

Coming to 2 States, the reports for that film is excellent and the book was hugely popular too. It has all commercial ingredients to be a huge hit like Aashiqui 2 last year.

  • wait and watch jai ho will break all records of dhoom3.never undersestimate the power of boxoffice badshah salman khan.jai ho getting huge buzz and also majoraty people don,t know that it is remake or and don,t want to know that.if salman is in the film all things or records are possible.even in the time of bodyguard buzz was very low but that movie break all records.jai ho.

  • @Indicine are you mad???….P.K 275cr???….3 IDIOTS was just a massive fluke…..i don’t think it will cross 200cr…….Ramesh Sippy made 1 sholay and collected….does that mean Ramesh sippy always delivers like tha????…..say it with some logic……

  • @indicine
    for highway just 40 crore???
It’s imtiaz ali movie..with a.r. Rehman music…also has good stars alia bhatt and randeep hooda

  • For Aamir Fans and his haters(who thinks Aamir is not populr or aprreciated outside India)

So shahid might disappoint this year..
