Box Office Predictions of 2014 Bollywood films: Part 1

Note: Predictions are just ‘expected numbers’ based on star cast, director and production house.

Jai Ho (Jan 24): Salman Khan has taken up the Republic Day weekend by getting his film Jai Ho to release on 24th January. It is the remake of a well accepted South Indian film called Stalin and should continue Salman’s winning streak even though the trailers have not differentiated it much from his last few films. While the film is unlikely to break the records set by Dhoom 3, it should cross the collections of Salman’s last film Dabangg 2. Box Office Prediction: 180 crore.

Gunday (Feb 14): Ranveer Singh got into the big league with the huge success of Ram Leela. This time around, he is back with his mentors Yash Raj Films in this 1970s based action drama which is set in the coalfields of West Bengal. The trailers of the film have highlighted the friendship and the confrontation which happens between them towards the end of the film. Priyanka Chopra adds to the glamour quotient of this film. We expect the film to do above average business. Box Office Prediction: 75 crore.

Jagga Jasoos (Oct 2): Barfi which arrived in 2012 surprised everyone with its box office performance. The team of Ranbir Kapoor, UTV and Anurag Basu reunite in this detective coming-of-age comic thriller. The film is expected to hit all the right notes with audiences universally and the music has been receiving a lot of pre-release buzz from industry insiders. Barfi’s success surprised us but the performance of Jagga Jasoos would be anything but surprising for us. Prediction: 175 crore.

PK (December): Rajkumar Hirani is the most well respected director in India today and the last time he teamed up with Aamir Khan, that film broke all records of that time. Although not much is known about the content of this film, it can be safely said that it will follow the feel good template of Hirani’s previous films. The release date and the screen size of the film will see it challenge the records set by Dhoom 3. Another blockbuster in store for Aamir Khan. The film is scheduled to release during the Post-IPL period, but could be postponed to Christmas 2014 if Aamir is not completely satisfied with the rough cut. Box Office Prediction: 275 – 300 crore.

Holiday (June 5): AR Murugadoss returns to direct a Hindi film after 6 years since Ghajini with this Akshay Kumar starrer that is a remake of his own film Thupakki. The original film proved to be a big hit commercially and Holiday should at the very least cross the collections of Akshay’s last few films. However it clashes with Ajay Devgn’s Action Jackson at the box office and if the clash does take place it will curtail the collections of Holiday. The film also releases during the IPL. Prediction with clash: 85 crore. Prediction without clash: 125 crore.

Ungli (Uncertain): Not much is currently known about Ungli except for the cast and the production house. Emraan Hashmi who has been concentrating on his Hollywood film for quite some time will be back in Hindi film territory with Ungli which also stars Sanjay Dutt, Randeep Hooda and Kangna Ranaut. Predicting the box office collection of a film without any knowledge about the film’s content is a very difficult proposition but we will take it up anyway. Prediction: 55 crore.

Haider (2nd half 2014): Shahid Kapoor got the biggest grosser of his career towards the end of 2013 with R… Rajkumar and 2014 will see him starring in Vishal Bharadwaj’s Haider. The actor-director duo previously made Kaminey which did above average business at the box office back in 2009. Haider is based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet and stars Shraddha Kapoor opposite Shahid. As it is not a very commercial film which will appeal to audiences universally, the box office returns should be limited.
Prediction: 60 crore.

Kill Dil (Sep 5): Shaad Ali returns to direct a film after his debacle of a film called Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Like that film, this also has been produced by Yash Raj Films and stars Parineeti Chopra, Ranveer Singh, and Ali Zafar in the lead roles. It promises to be an unusual comedy thriler going by the snippets we have received about the film. We expect Shaad to get back into the green zone with Kill Dil.
Prediction: 70 crore.

2 States (Apr 18): We’ve been hearing great things about this Karan Johar – Sajid Nadiadwala collaboration. The film is based on Chetan Bhagat’s 2009 novel 2 States: The Story of my marriage, which was a smash-hit with the youth. Directed by Abhishek Varman, the film is a story of a couple from different states in India. Even if the book is half as spicy and entertaining as the book was, 2 States should go on to be hugely successful commercial blockbuster. Prediction: 75 crore

  • come man the knowledge of cinema is very limited here…how come jai ho become masala film?its dabangg or oso….jai ho wil do wel at b.o i guarntee….jan 14 today kaho na pyaarhai released 14 yrs congrts hritik…

  • @vinay

    are you mad..!
It will collect 350 crs from overseas only.
Domestic will be atleast 500-600 crs.

Its a King Khan film who hitted top spot each year in last 7 years & its directed by legendary director Farah Khan who recently given a ATBB Tees Mar Khan.

  • Lollll @amol — Let me remind you past 7 years include 2006 & 2007 also. ….in 2006 D2 top grosser and in 2007 OSO…..And this year also if CE would have got at least two weeks of free run then sky would be its limit. ….for your kind info CE trended better than D3 in 2nd and 3rd week……and also for the past 5 years srk made experimental films but still he remained in top 3-5 per year…..he just made a masala film CE after the BB OSO….And it also went to be BB and Biggest Grosser Of All Time. …..so don’t underestimate the power of SRK aka WE THE COMMON MAN.

  • @Kingshuk.Bhattacharjee

    “CE trended better than
    D3 in 2nd and 3rd week……?”
    Point to be noted.

Yes it trended better than D3 ok then why it not broked 2nd week record of 3 idiots..?
It broked by D3 by huge margine & you think CE trended better than D3…lol.

Now i think you should reply with a typical Srk fan style with excuse of competition of OATIMD(Just like competition is like Gadar vs Lagaan).

But what about the holidays my friend..?

CE gets Eid release + Basi Eid +Sunday +Paid previews(All most half release) +Independence Day(OATIMD not got significant screens on that day).

Almost 4 holidays in first week itself.

Where as D3 had only one holiday in its first week.

And what kind of competition you guys talk every time..?

Lifetime of CE was crossed by D3 in 9 days only with just one holiday.

Whereas CE also got 9 open days on its release because OATIMD gets full screens on Saturday & if you add paid previews then its almost 9 open days with 4 holidays.

But we are not relying on such kind of silly excuses. We are not worried about clashes.

If you can tren tell any actor to clash with any Salman or Aamir starer.
That time also we will not give such kind of excuses.

Accept the truth my friend.Dont force me to talk about the solo releases & screen differences between Ready & Bodyguard with Ra.One & Don2.

  • Now i am posting some figures of Srk’s different genres.

A super hero film(Not much liked trend by Indians):-

    Ra.One(115 crs) vs K3(242 crs).

    Romantic genre:-

    JTHJ(101 crs) vs YJHD(176 crs).

    Action thriller:-

    Don2(106 crs) vs ETT(199 crs).

    Masala film:-

    CE(226 crs) vs Dhoom3(290 crs).

He almost tried each genre & gets beaten by other actor film with same genre.

For me Srk did only one good film in last 7 years & its MNIK.
This the film which really deserve to break 3 idiots record but sad that Indian audience is not ready for such films currently.

Otherwise his all other films are just crap.neither entertaining nor good contents.

Yes Salman also made bad films like BG & D2 but atleast these films had entertainment values.

But the films like Ra.One,Jthj & Don2 missed all these things thats why they get rejected by public & BO proved it.You might say that how can a 100 crs film was rejected but these 100 crs are for brand Khan not for film.Any film with what ever contents but only title of one 3 Khans will easily cross 100 crs.

The business did by CE is also due to change in new BO tactics this year(more screens, sky high ticket price).

If you ask any BO site about the tickets sold for ETT & CE then you get that tickets for ETT sold more than CE(just in 1 year difference).

Thats why the films like Grand Masti also crossed 100 crs mark easily.

And K3 & D3 proved that with new tactics you can easily hit 250 crs with holiday release with big star.
