Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil sustained well throughout the second week at the box office, even though business was hit by the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes on Wednesday and Thursday. Business should be back to normal levels during the second weekend as new currency circulation has increased on Friday and will continue to increase in the next couple of days as banks remain open.
The film is a profitable venture for all involved and considering the fact that ADHM’s appeal was mostly at audience in urban centres, the lifetime domestic total of nearly 105 crore in 2 weeks is good. It remains to be seen where the film goes from here, it should finish with lifetime business of around 110 – 115 crore.
Overseas, ADHM is the second highest grosser of the year after Salman Khan’s Sultan. Karan Johar as director and a strong star cast has ensured a very healthy overseas total.

- ADHM is Ranbir Kapoor’s third highest career grosser, after Barfi (108 cr) and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (188 cr).
- ADHM is the fourth 100 crore grosser for Anushka Sharma after PK (341 cr), Sultan (301 cr) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (120 cr).
- ADHM is the highest domestic grosser for Karan Johar.
- ADHM is (and should remain) the third highest grosser for Dharma Productions after Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (188 cr) and Agneepath (120 cr).
- ADHM is currently the second highest grosser overseas, but should finish as the 3rd highest grosser overseas behind Sultan and Dangal. Dear Zindagi and Befikre could surprise as Aditya Chopra films do well overseas and Gauri Shinde’s last film English Vinglish did well too.
- It’s the fourth highest grosser for Fox Star Studio after Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Bang Bang and MS Dhoni The Untold Story.

A film that beat all hurdles in its way – cheap tactics by Ajay Devgn, ban and protests, social media hounding and boycott, threats by fringe elements. Proud of ADHM that it crossed 100 despite being a below average film.
It also proved that boycott by fringe social groups doesn’t make any freaking difference to a film’s business. Infact, it can only increase.
Now, I’m even more confident that Dangal will be a rousing success!

I don’t understand why a karan johar movie with all commercial elements n a strong strong cast is being so hyped with collections of even less than 120cr lifetime… That was the bare minimum expected out of it…at least a business of 130cr+ was surely expected… Even offbeat films like airlift and rustom and dhoni did more business.. With a relatively weaker cast and/or director.. Is it just the clash factor then dilwale n bm did 148 n 187 cr…so where is the big deal in 115 cr collections.. Why is being overhyped by all websites so much

Movie was just average to be honest. This year is very disappointing both in terms of quality and box office. There was no universally appealing great movie. Pink, Neerja and Airlift were niche films. Sultan and MS Dhoni didn’t got extraordinary WOM. In terms of Box office only Sultan was a huge grosser. Fan was a flop and Mohenjo Daro was a disaster. Shivaye has also underperformed big time.
From upcoming movies only Dear Zindagi and Dangal look promising in terms of content. I don’t have high hopes from Kahaani 2 bcoz sequels always disappoint and matching the first part will be really difficult. Dangal will be Blockbuster but in no way it can beat PK or Bajrangi Bhaijaan bcoz of less mass appeal. Though it has a chance of beating Sultan.
