24 Bollywood related questions answered
QnA will continue at 8:30PM IST today. Question from yesterday will be answered. Comments will be closed for now and will be opened only after the QnA session begins. Q. Is Robot 2.0 considered as a Bollywood movie? Or can we just say Akshay is doing a Tamil movie for the first time that will be dubbed just like robot first part? – Yousif A. The makers have said Robot 2.0 will be a bilingual film, shot in both Tamil and Hindi. So we could just call it an Indian film - directed by a Tamil director, featuring a top star from both Tamil (Kollywood) and Hindi (Bollywood). Q. Considering the genre of the movie and pre release buzz, did Ghayal Once Again turn out to be better than expectations? – Udit Sharma A. Yes, the film was better than trade expectations. More importantly, the film did not show any drop in business on Day 2 and managed to pick up on Sunday. The first weekend was probably a little above expectations, but that doesn’t mean the film will recover costs. It has a long way to go and the weekdays will be crucial. Q. According to you who are Top 5 actors in single screens and multiplex in today’s time? – Devesh A. The list wouldn’t be too different because Khans and Hrithik are still the top stars both at single-screens and multiplexes. Ranbir was in the Top 5 at plexes, but has now dropped down. It would be Salman, SRK, Aamir, Hrithik, Akshay at single screens. Aamir, Salman, SRK, Hrithik, Akshay at multiplexes. The younger actors have raised their game, Varun could make it to the Top 5 at multiplexes if Dishoom opens 15 crore plus. Q. Can Ghayal Once Again become a hit? A. There is a possibility, but it has to do well for two weeks. It needs to cross the 60 crore mark. Q. Can Fitoor become the biggest February grosser ever because it is directed by Abhisek Kapoor whose last 2 films were both critically & commercially successful plus it is based on Charles Dickens’ one of the most loved novels A. Very few films that critic love go on to do well at the box office. Vishal Bhardwaj, Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane are classic examples of directors who get critical acclaim, but only a small section of the audience actually pay to watch their films in theatres. Business is usually restricted to 10-15 cities at best. Abhishek Kapoor’s films are more commercial, so as long as Fitoor finds a balance between art and entertainment, it should do well at the box office. The target for February isn’t too high - Gunday (78 cr), My Name Is Khan (73 cr), Special 26 (69 cr) – Akshay Kumar are the Top 3 grossers of the month. Q. Which movies has the potential to break PK domestic and Worldwide collections? – Harjot Gill A. PK’s overseas record will be tough to beat because of the way the film performed in China. So basically, a film has to do 400 crore plus in India for it to negate the China factor and have a realistic chance of beating PK worldwide. Domestic would be very difficult too. 300 crore is a HUGE figure, the combined business of Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani was Rs 335 crore. So it a film would first have to attain universal acclaim like PK and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Even then it would need one Eid or Christmas and lots of holidays. If Raees clashes with Sultan, no chance. Mohenjo Daro would have to do a Baahubali. Dangal is probably the best bet, but it doesn’t seem to be commercial enough to do 300 plus. Q. Who do you think is the major reason for bajirao mastanis success ? Is it rising stardom of Ranveer, Deepika reaching heights like Sridevi/Hema Malini/Madhuri etc and capable of pulling films on her own or Sanjay Leela Bhansali ? A. Bajirao Mastani did not work because of star power, it worked because of positive word-of-mouth. Ranveer is big after Bajirao Mastani, but was down and out after Kill Dil. Deepika is huge, but not when on her own (both Finding Fanny and Piku opened at around 5-6 crore). A big share of the credit for the success of Bajirao Mastani should go to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for making a good film. And also to Eros Entertainment. It isn’t easy in the industry to take on someone like Shah Rukh Khan and win, when most have failed. Q. What’s the next project of Rohit Shetty? – Arun A. Rohit Shetty is currently working on the script of Ram Lakhan. Q. Is this for the first time that we can officially say that SRK is 3rd Khan ? Last few years Aamir is the one to open 100 200 300 clubs. On the other hand Salmania is beyond understanding – how can someone who was ruled out suddenly take over industry by storm. Can we officially admit that SRK is behind both Aamir and Salman? A. Fortunes in our industry change every Friday and the unpredictable game is about perception and expectation. If Sultan and Dangal fall below-expectations and Raees and Fan do well, SRK will once again be hailed as the biggest. At the same time, if the trend of Aamir and Salman surpassing expectations continue, and if the two SRK films don’t perform well.. it would add fuel to people who are talking about SRK no longer being the big star that he once was. However, it’s only expectations of maintaining a very high level that is hurting SRK. Because even with clash and a film that was supposedly rejected, the worldwide gross of Dilwale was nearly 400 crore. Dilwale is one of the Top 10 highest worldwide grossers of all time, how is that a failure? Even in the domestic market, 150 crore is huge for a film that is perceived to be a under-performer. Q. Which are the circuits where Sultan and Raees will lead (on 1st day) respectively? – Aban A. We have already analysed circuits in this article – Raees vs Sultan: The Mother of All Clashes. Q. Where was Salman position in last decade was he in Top 10? A. He wasn’t in the Top 5 for a long period of time in the last decade and his films weren’t even taking a face-saving opening at the box office. From there to becoming the top star in the industry and delivering so many back-to-back blockbusters, it has most certainly been one of the biggest and most surprising comebacks in the industry. The surprising part is the level of stardom that is being witnessed, it’s insane at the moment. At smaller towns, Salman is incomparable when it comes to craze today. Q. Will Mohenjo Daro get solo release this year Republic days weekend? Any confirmations of Rustam & Hera Pheri 3’s release date? I want to know your analysis. – Kushee Radhakrishnan A. No updates on Hera Pheri 3, it’s been announced for the same weekend, but three big films can’t release in the same week. Rustom shooting has begun and the film is on course to release during the Independence Day weekend. Mohenjo Daro will be the film that will be affected the most by the clash, the budget is huge and the genre needs time to grow. If it doesn’t get enough shows at multiplexes in Week 1, it wouldn’t be the best time to release such a big film. Q. Nowadays we get to hear about upcoming Bollywood films of our favorite stars way before in advance from *SOURCES close to project* via TV media/online media/newspapers/magazines. Some of them end up being just a rumour. So my question is, are these Sources a part of PR Machinery of respective stars??? & they do it on purpose to generate curiosity? – Tanumoy A. It’s a combination of actual sources close to the star / film, PR-machinery and also media creating stories to fill space. Any rumour that last for long or isn’t rubbished by the actors / official sources is true. If a false rumour is doing the rounds, a clarification is released almost immediately. Not always the case with private matters / relationships though. Q. What would have been the collections of PK, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Dhoom 3 and other big movies if there was no piracy? – Bollyboy A. Difficult to put a number to the impact of piracy. Because a film could also lose out on repeat viewers. For example, if someone loved watching Bajirao Mastani on the big screen and wants to watch it again, he / she might download it instead of spending money on a movie ticket. So the overall loss of business could be huge. We could have probably had films grossing 400 crore in India, if not for piracy. Q. Which actor is loved by Indians more than anyone else? A. Amitabh Bachchan. Q. What is the ratio of single screen and Multiplex business for a film? Can you give us a few examples of how much did the biggest hits of last few years(Bajrangi Bhaijaan, PK, kick, Chennai express) made at single screen and how much at a multiplex.? and how does the multiplex business of a appreciated “multiplex movie” or a “niche movie” compare to the biggest hits? A. Contribution from multiplexes is huge, in the mid-80s for most films and more for multiplex targeted films. Even for a film like PK, it was somewhere in the mid 70s at multiplexes, compared to about 20-25% of business coming from single-screens. Higher ticket prices is one of the biggest reasons. Some tickets were selling for as high as 1000 rupees for Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale. This has had a negative impact too, as some filmmakers are making movies for a very limited section of the audience. The positive side of things should have been quality films for the multiplex audience, but there have been very few extraordinary films for the thinking audience in the last few years. The rise of multiplexes should also have helped the industry to no longer be dependent on stars, but that hasn’t happened either. Q. Where should a actor create his fan base? 1) single screen 2)multiplex? A. Ideally, both. But it isn’t easy, as it take a long time and a few mass films to establish a fan base at smaller centres. But even after establishing a pan-India fanbase, it isn’t easy, because actors need to balance the content of their films too. Salman can’t do a film like Talaash, because his core fan base won’t come to watch it. The industry is a difficult place to make a mark and once you do, even more difficult to sustain it for a long period of time. Q. Has Shahrukh Khan’s delivered 15 hits in a row like Rajesh Khanna? A. SRK now has 12 consecutive successful films. 3 short of Rajesh Khanna. And before someone asks, Khanna also delivered quite a few semi-hit films in between. Rajesh Khanna’s 15 hits Full List Q. How popular are our hindi movies in Pakistan? – Shashank A. Hugely popular. Bollywood stars are loved in Pakistan. Q. Has UAE became biggest overseas circuit for Bollywood movies(apart from China which isn’t traditional market)? And is Pakistan 4th biggest market for Bollywood movies surpassing Australia? A. Yes, UAE and US are the biggest overseas circuits for Indian movies. Very few Indian movies release in China. Q. Saif Ali Khan made his debut in 1992 and has completed 24 years in this industry but why he still has not been able to make an impact like Khans, Ajay, Akshay and Hrithik ? A. Saif Ali Khan never made it big as a solo hero. His two solo films worked when Yash Raj Films was at the peak of their popularity. Salaam Namaste and Hum Tum also had top heroines like Rani and Preity who were at the peak of their popularity back then. He delivered two more solo hits – Love Aaj Kal directed by Imtiaz Ali and Cocktail. None of those films opened well because Saif Ali Khan was the lead, it was a combination of factors that worked. He could never connect with the masses, most films were washouts. Q. Who is the biggest overseas star today.. Aamir or SRK..? A. We should let this question rest for a while. SRK has been leagues ahead in the overseas markets for a very long time and his latest release Dilwale was one of the biggest grossers. It’s only now that the competition is getting closer and Salman’s turning point only came with Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Even then, it would take anyone 5-10 extraordinary years to beat SRK. Currently in Top 20, SRK has 9 films, Salman has 4 and Aamir has 3. Q. Do you think Kapoor and Sons can open in 10 crore range? A. Highly unlikely. Let’s wait for the trailer, can give a better answer then. Q. Who is more popular – Katrina or Deepika? A. Right now, it’s Deepika. Katrina isn’t too far behind, but she isn’t doing films with big stars. Katrina’s value when it comes to opening, increases big time when she does a commercial film with a big star. That’s the end of Indicine QnA. Hope you liked today’s session!

AskIndicine: Live Now
Live Question and Answer session begins at 10PM today, post your questions in the comments section below. A record 450 comments have been posted on this article. QnA begins in 10 minutes. Q. When The FAN Trailer Is coming? How Many Songs In The Movie FAN? A. The FAN trailer is expected in about 15-20 days from now. YRF doesn’t have a date for the trailer yet. As for the songs, there are reports that there are 3 songs in the film. Two are likely to be promotional tracks. The report is unconfirmed, as YRF is secretive about the project. Vishal – Shekhar are composing the music. Q. What is the worldwide collection of Airlift? A. It’s approximately Rs 204 crore worldwide, Akshay Kumar’s highest worldwide grosser to date. Q. Footfalls of Airlift till second week? A. About 1 – 1.05 crore footfalls (tickets sold) till the end of second week. Q. What is the production budget of Mohenjo daro? And when is the shooting supposed to finish? A. Production budget including Hrithik’s fee could cross Rs 120 crore. Too early to talk about the budget, as the film is currently on the floors. Hrithik’s injury has delayed the shoot by a few weeks. Q. Why is trade already considering Jagga Jasoos as Flop? Reshooting is for betterment of a movie so why its taken in a negative way? Anushman A. Jagga Jasoos has been in the making for a long time now and there have been reports that the makers themselves are not happy with the way the film has shaped up. While they have also denied reports of scenes being reshot, the pre-release reports are not very positive. It happened with films like Bombay Velvet too and the audience, especially at metro cities, is well aware of this. However, Jagga Jasoos should still take a reasonably good opening if the trailer impresses. Q. How much screens will FAN get? It’s a solo release? – Ehtesham A. Shah Rukh Khan commands a strong fan-following in every territory in India. So even though it’s a niche film (unlikely to hold mass appeal), it should still release on 3500 plus screens in India. Q. What’s your opinion of masala film after the underperformance of Dilwale, has masala genre died because films like Jai Ho, Singh is Bling, Action Jackson were flops at box office too? A. A genre doesn’t die when one or two films fail at the box office, the ‘south style masala films’ were overdone when a few films like Ghajini, Dabangg, Rowdy Rathore worked at the box office. Unfortunately, a lot of films that released weren’t entertaining enough for the audience to come out in big numbers. Having said that, a well made entertaining film will still work, like we have seen with films like Kick, Chennai Express. Even Bajrangi Bhaijaan can be put in the same category as ‘masala’ is nothing but a combination of action, comedy, romance. BB had a social message and a good story to tell too. As for Dilwale, it wasn’t rejected by the audience. 150 crore is a big number and had it released solo, it would have easily crossed the 200 crore mark. The audience had two choices last Christmas, a film that promised a difference experience, a magnum opus that provided better value-for-money, they opted for it instead of a routine Rohit Shetty entertainer. Even Om Shanti Om wouldn’t have done as well as it did, if it was competing against a Bajirao Mastani instead of Saawariya. Q. Bajirao Mastani is a box office Hit but is there any chance for it in TV though it is a niche film? A. Definitely. Baahubali fetched excellent TRP’s on television and Bajirao Mastani’s tv premiere will also be keenly-awaited. It’ll be a huge, the satellite rights have fetched an excellent price too. Q. What about Raees and Sultan clash, both are big films and definitely every one would love to watch both films. So will the clash be averted? A. So far, there hasn’t been any news from both sides regarding the clash. There is a long way for the shoot of Sultan to be wrapped up. But we’ve now been hearing in the last few days from trade sources, that both YRF and Excel/Red Chillies want to work out a solution and possibly avert the clash. Q. Box office is in loss in January due to flop films except Airlift? A. Airlift was the biggest success and by far the biggest grosser. A couple of films recovered costs, all other movies failed. We have a detailed report on January 2016 Q. What is your take on Shahid Kapoor upcoming movies and his career after the release? Please give details. @fans from Nepal A. He has two films Udta Punjab and Rangoon – both are unlikely to hold universal appeal and both will rely on word-of-mouth. Shahid’s career has always looked promising, but his films haven’t worked at the box office. That has to change and change very quick if he has to compete with rising stars like Varun and Ranveer. Only when his films work will more commercial and bigger directors sign him for their films. Talent alone is not enough in the industry, unfortunately. It’s about choosing and doing the right films. Q. What could be the opening day figure of Housefull 3? A. Should be 20 crore plus on a non-holiday. Certain to be Akshay’s biggest non-holiday opening. Q. After Airlift’s phenomenal success, can Housefull 3 do 200 crore? Housefull 2 managed 110 with extremely negative reviews and average word-of-mouth? – Gajendra A. Housefull 2 had positive word-of-mouth and the film was liked both by the multiplex and single-screen audience. Such films never get positive reviews, it’s only the audience reviews that matter at the end of the day. Unlike Airlift, Housefull 3 has wider appeal and hence has the potential to do 200 crore. But for that the film has to be entertaining. Q. Fitoor or Sanam Re, which film has more buzz and which one will open better? – Priya A. The music of Sanam Re has done well and T-Series is going all out to promote it. But Fitoor should still manage a better opening because of Katrina Kaif’s presence, she’s still a big star. Sanam Re has no star value. Q. Is SRK the biggest crowd puller in overseas and who is No.1 in overseas among 3 Khan’s? Which will be bigger hit between Fan & Raees? A. SRK’s overseas record is staggering. Which was his last film that did not perform well overseas? We do not know. Every film works, most work big. With Dilwale, he’s yet again proved that he’s the biggest crowd puller in the traditional market, as not only did a successful film like Bajirao Mastani release, but Star Wars also released during the same period. Dilwale has also set records in several non-traditional countries, but the collections are not as big as PK in China, which is why it doesn’t hit headlines. Q. When the National film awards 2016. Will be given? According to you who should win Best actor National award in Bollywood? A. National Awards 2016 will be announced on April 16, will be given / presented on May 3rd. Best Actor is picked from all languages and not just from Bollywood – we are not too sure about the top performances other film industries. Q. How many Bollywood films have crossed the 100 crore mark worldwide and how many have crossed the 200 crore mark worldwide (both figures in gross)? A. We will do an article on this. Too many to list here. Q. Any movie Hrithik signed after Mohenjo Daro? Any updates about Thug or Dhoom 4 or Kabir Khan’s movie? – Sam A. He will be doing a film with Sanjay Gupta (Kaabil) followed by a film with Kabir Khan. Q. If Shivaay works among masses and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil work among classes, then which movie will earn more? – Chanakya A. There is no question of such movies working at the box office, if they fail at multiplexes. The contribution of multiplexes is more than 80-85% for most films and even universal blockbusters the ratio is 65-70 at multiplexes vs 30-35 at single-screens. Q. Can Rustom outgross Airlift if the content is strong?can it do 150crs even with clash? What kind of opening can it take? Your views. A. Too early to talk about Rustom. Let the trailer release. Q. Is Salman’s current stardom that started post wanted bigger than anything witnessed before across generation? (Compared to biggest superstars of all time like Dilip Sahab, Mr. Bachan, Rajesh Khanna) A. We haven’t really experienced the superstardom of Bachchan or Khanna. The footfalls of Bachchan movies used to be much higher than Salman Khan films of today. But that could be due to various reasons – more entertainment options, piracy, ticket prices etc etc. But no other actors has so many back-to-back blockbusters / all time blockbusters like Salman. Q. Do you think that single screens will accept content driven films like FAN? A. Doubtful, but lets wait and see. It would depend on how entertaining the film is. It’s also difficult to predict what ‘clicks’ with the audience. A good film like Baby doesn’t do as well as it should, but Airlift takes off and does very well. Box office is very unpredictable, anything can happen. Q. I love Abhay Deol acting, so i want to know what are Abhay Deol upcoming films? – Jassi A. Abhay Deol has signed Dulha Mil Gaya director’s Mudassar Aziz, co-produced by Aanand L Rai (Tanu Weds Manu Returns). Diana Penty of Cocktail fame has been cast opposite him. Q. Why the Akshay Kumar is still not able cross 150 Crore mark after getting fantastic starts.. Movies like Baby and Airlift and with Positive word of mouth? A. That’s because of the limited appeal of the film. Airlift was a thriller, it’s not what we’d call a ‘wholesome entertainer’. Because of this, the film performance well at 35-40 odd cities in the country. A better example would be Chak De India and Om Shanti Om, the former is a much better film, but the later more entertainer and massy – which is why it was a much bigger grosser. Taalash is another example, even if its a classic must watch film, it won’t gross half as much as PK / Dhoom 3. 25 questions were answered today, we will answer more questions tomorrow. Like always, thank you for your support.

Bollywood Box Office Collections 2016 with Verdict
Box office collections of all major Bollywood movies released in 2016 along with verdict and summary. This page will be updated everyday. Do bookmark it! Wazir: The first big release of 2016 didn’t open well at the box office, but remained steady for 2 weeks. The film found appreciation in 5-10 cities, which eventually helped it become an average grosser. Average. Airlift: Akshay Kumar’s first release of 2016 wasn’t ‘hot’ in the trade prior to release and domestic theatrical rights did not fetch a big price either, but Airlift was one of those films that got its economics right, which helped the film become the first ‘Super Hit’ of the year. Pre-release expectations as 70-75 crore range, but Airlift should finish with lifetime business of 125 crore and become the highest January grosser of all time. It’s also Akshay’s second highest career grosser. The contribution of Airlift for the month of January was more than 50%. Super Hit. Kya Kool Hain Hum 3: A section of the trade expected Kya Kool Hain Hum to outgross Airlift, but the end result was outright rejection from the audience. KKHH3 was the biggest disappointment of January. Flop. Mastizaade: The Sunny Leone starrer opened to a reasonably good response and sustained fairly well too. The official figures suggest the film has just about recovered costs. Average. Saala Khadoos: Rajkumar Hirani’s name was expected to help generate interest around Saala Khadoos, but the audience did not turn up at theatres to watch the R. Madhavan starrer. It didn’t get the kind of critical acclaim that such films need to grow on word-of-mouth, which sealed its fate by the end of its first weekend. Flop. Fitoor: Opened to disastrous response and tanked without a trace. Katrina Kaif’s career hit an all-time low with Fitoor. Neerja: Opened slow, but gained momentum over the weekend. Was fantastic in Week 1 and eventually went on to become the 2nd highest grosser of 2016 after Airlift. Yet another film that was based on a true event. Jai Gangaajal: Priyanka Chopra didn’t promote the film as much as she should have. The film didn’t open well, the word-of-mouth wasn’t good either. Flop. Kapoor & Sons: The Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Fawad Khan starrer open fairly well at the box office and showed good growth over the weekend – even though the Saturday collections of the film was affected by the India vs Pakistan World Cup match. During the weekdays, the film came into its own, recording fantastic collections for nearly 2 weeks. The Jungle Book: The biggest surprise of the year came in the form of ‘The Jungle Book’. In the next few days, the film will go on to be biggest grosser of 2016 ahead of Akshay Kumar’s Airlift. It has also severely affected the business of Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN. FAN: The biggest release of the year featured Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. It was expected to open well, it did. It was expected to grow further on word-of-mouth, but that didn’t happen as the business of the film began to falter on Day 2 itself. The crash on Monday has sealed its fate. First Shah Rukh Khan flop after 2005’s Paheli, that in itself is the most shocking trade news of 2016.

Ghayal Once Again Reviews by Critics
[mks_button size=”medium” title=”Average Rating of All ‘Ghayal Once Again’ Review – 2.4 stars” style=”rounded” bg_color=”#1e73be” txt_color=”#FFFFFF” icon=”” icon_type=””] Ghayal Once Again Review by Indicine Rating: Ghayal Once Again has its moments and Sunny Deol proves once again that he can give the younger generation of Bollywood stars a run for their money. The actor looks younger than his age (58) and performs most of his action sequences himself. Sadly though, the supporting actors in the film don’t quite match up. Everything from the dialogue delivery to expressions come across as forced and Sunny the director hasn’t been able to extract watchable performances out of his actors. Ghayal Once Again Review by Bollywood Hungama Rating: First things first. One has to give it to Sunny Deol for putting his heart and soul in the film as the director. However, even though his attempts look extremely sincere, what does not work for the film is that there are too many tracks (read ‘stories’) in the film that run simultaneously, thus confusing the viewers totally. Even the film’s story (Sagar Pandya, Shaktimaan Talwar) is nothing new and suffers big time in the name of ‘cinematic liberties’. The film’s screenplay (Vishal Vijay Kumar, Sanjay Masoom) should have been written in order to suit today’s taste. There are way too many flaws in the film. Many of the characters and their relationships remain unexplained till the end. For instance, Sunny Deol’s profession oscillates between him being a news agency owner and a social activist. Is Soha Ali Khan merely a doctor who is treating Sunny, or is she also his girlfriend… and many such things. The final twist in the film is way too ridiculous and totally unbelievable. Even though the film starts off on a decent note, the first half becomes confusing towards the interval and then gets endlessly dragged throughout the second half. The biggest letdown in the film is absence of Sunny Deol’s elements of trademark action and hard-hitting dialogues. Ghayal Once Again Review by Manjusha Radhakrishnan on Gulfnews Rating: Although, we have to laud Deol for his attempt at giving his award-winning classic a new lease of life, it misses the mark. The villains, especially the business tycoon with a spoilt son, are one-dimensional and some of their threats make you laugh. This seems to be an exercise in overacting. The baddies scream, the hero roars and the young women whimper. There’s an interesting twist in the second half, but by then you may be too numb to care. After watching this, the question about who is the wounded one — the viewer or the hero — may arise. Ghayal Once Again Review by Saibal Chatterjee on NDTVMovies Rating: Sunny Deol’s acting takes the standard path. He hollers when he is angry, he scowls when he is flummoxed, and he breathes fire when he means business. It is a style that belongs to the Stone Age. Soha Ali Khan, playing a psychiatrist treating the hero for his blackouts and meltdowns, is always at hand to remind him to pop the prescribed pills before he careens out of control. But obviously, she does not have the power to extend any such favours to the audience. So watch Ghayal Once Again at your own risk and only if you can withstand the relentless onslaught it unleashes. Ghayal Once Again Review by Sarita A Tanwar on DNA India Rating: It’s important in a thriller to be able to maintain the pace constantly. This one falters quite a bit in the second half after a good start. Even in Ghayal, one of the reasons the film stood out was because of how the protagonist used his intelligence against the system. Even if they had to use the same formula in this one, it would’ve been enough. The whole climax of the hero bringing down a chopper into the villain’s house is a bit too much, especially when the VFX is also not up to the mark. There are also a few edit jerks in the film that could’ve been avoided. Ghayal Once Again Review by Shubhra Gupta on Indian Express Rating: Till the film keeps moving briskly—the chase scenes are effective, if stretched—you stay with it. And then the ludicrous plot with all those hanging threads kicks in, and prevents us from getting what we’ve come to this film for : to see Sunny D. do his thing the way only he can. Sunny the actor is still a lethal weapon and can blow his opponent all the way across the room. Sunny the director should just get out his way. Review by Rajat Tripathi on Bollywood Life Rating: The action begins so late in the film that you lose interest. And what is finally served doesn’t compensate for the lack of it earlier. While you will be impressed at the realistic hand to hand combats, the feeling is neutralized by over the top shoddy action scenes including successfully jumping from one local train to another and flying a chopper around the Ambani mansion. The film desperately tries to be Die Hard. Sunny is remembered by his fans for his strong dialogues and power packed punches but sadly, this film has nothing of that sort to offer. Review by Ritika Handoo on Zeenews Rating: Sunny, who has directed the film has packed many fist fight sequences which the audience will love especially the one in the end where his ‘dhai kilo ka haath’ actually knocks the sound out of the criminal mind. Sunny has tried his best to reiterate the importance of ‘women safety’ and how we need to fight for it. Thank God the maker in him felt the need to not put unwanted songs in the script as it would have been a complete let down. Review by Shubha Shetty-Saha on Mid-Day India Rating: Sunny Deol, as a director, does a better than decent job. He manages to keep the plot believable and keep you involved in the goings on. His triumph is also in choosing the right cast and behind-the-scenes people. Good performances (especially by the four youngsters), crisp editing (Chandan Arora), clever screenplay (which goes a bit over the board in the climax, though) and dialogues tailored well to fit the screenplay works towards making this a good watch. Sunny Deol, as the actor, is obviously no patch on the younger version but then again the story of this film cleverly doesn’t portray him to be. Review by Sonia Chopra on Sify Rating: How one wishes the central character was written with at least that much thought. We see the emotional arch only much later. Essentially, you see Sunny Deol, fit at 58, doing stunt gimmicks like hanging off a train, hijacking a helicopter and so on. In the end, his “dhai kilo ka haath” makes an appearance as well. And so while Sunny Deol makes for a fairly powerful performer, his filmmaking style is sincere, but keen to stick to the old-school, and rough around the edges. The film is earnest and has a few genuine, emotional moments, but is defeated by an outmoded viewpoint and look. It had the potential to be so much more. Review by Jaidev Hemmady on Movietalkies Rating: However, what the film lacks is a decent pace and there are times when you wish the film could move faster. Also, many elements in the film seem quite unreal- Mehra, who runs a newspaper, also has a Bat-Cave like bunker with the kind of gadgetry that would have made Batman proud. In another scene, Raj Bansal, who is trying to trace Mehra, calls up the Defence Secretary to order him to deploy satellites to find his foe! Things like these make us wish Sunny paaji would have exercised some restraint on his imagination. Another thing that Ghayal Once Again suffers from is the stale plot, which has nothing new to offer, despite Deol’s efforts to make the story seem modern by introducing cyber jargon and hackers and electronic surveillance in his story (a girl committing suicide after being raped is just too 80s, paaji). Some of the VFX scenes, like the climax helicopter sequence, could have been done better to avoid making it look cartoonish. Review by Rohit Vats on Hindustan Times Rating: Ghayal Once Again is a throwback to Sunny Deol’s angry common man persona made during the ‘90s. It’s a terribly made film with nothing much to offer except Narendra Jha’s performance as the suave villain. I have borne the pain so that you can live in peace. The ‘dhai kilo ka haath’ shows its age and gives you enough time to duck. So duck. Review by Sukanya Verma on Rediff Rating: There’s only one solid reason to watch this reboot — Sunny Deol. The action hero returns to serve some old fashioned justice in Ghayal Once Again as the still seething, still suffering Ajay Mehra like only he can. If also it could deliver the stamp of sharp, solid filmmaking like only the man who conceived Ajay Mehra can. Review by Suhani Singh on India Today Rating: Barring one well-staged chase sequence which unfolds in a mall, there is little here that gets the adrenaline going. The screenplay, written by Deol, Shaktimaan and Sagar Pandya, instead of offering an engrossing story is more a series of action events put together. Some of them with substandard visual effects and visible stunt doubles. Review by Mehul S Thakkar on Deccan Chronicle Rating: As for the film, being a remake of 90’s blockbuster Ghayal, the story line does bring in some relevance from the old plot. This makes the situations in which Ajay Mehra has been operating appear more realistic. Baring few shots, which appear like a work of an amateur, the VFX could have been better. Review by Renuka Vyavahare on The Times Of India Rating: Though not as emotionally engaging as the original, the sequel delivers what it promises on the action front. Skilfully shot, elaborate nail-biting chase sequences across the city leave you glued to your seats, gasping for breath. Heavy-duty fist fights are equally gripping. Soha Ali Khan acts well and so do the teenagers. Review by Rajeev Masand on IBNLive Rating: Melodrama reaches fever pitch, particularly in the final act, when a corny twist is revealed. There’s also a shrill female character who gets a little too much screen time to ham it up to the hilt. As far as our hero is concerned, Sunny Deol can still land a punch, and he directs his actors competently. But he deserves a better script…and so do we. By the time he flies into the frame on a chopper in the film’s overlong climax, you’re at the end of your patience and you really just want the film to end. Review by Kunal Guha on Mumbai Mirror Rating: Deol’s directorial debut, Dillagi (1999), failed to impress. But clearly, action and blood-boiling revenge is a genre closer to home and he packs in most of the ingredients in this one. The chase scenes in the film aren’t nearly as terrifying as those in The Transporter series or Bond films but the fact that we’re comparing, speaks volumes for how they’ve been conceptualised. A hat-tip to the VFX team for furnishing the aerial night shots and the cityscapes, which make aamchi Mumbai resemble any first-world metropolis. While Ghayal was a path-breaking revenge story that won seven Filmfare Awards, this sequel won’t manage as much traction. But if you’re a Sunny Deol fanboy, this one ticks all: lung-tearing screams and crushing punches. Review by Martin D’Souza on Glamsham Rating: Sunny is good in the action as well as emotion sequences and he throws in a neat twist into the script to take the film to its climax. A bit of DIE HARD 2 flashes into your mind. And though the end is a little over-the-top, you can forgive this largesse. This is Sunny Deol and his Dhai Kilo Ka haath does talk in the end! The kids Anushka (Aanchal Munjal), Rohan (Shivam Patil), Zoya (Daina Khan) and Varun (Rishabh Arora) all put in a decent performance but the boy who hits the high notes with his performance is the one who plays Bansal’s son. Soha Ali Khan has a confused role. One does not know whether she is just a doctor to Ajay or if there is more to their relationship. Review by Manisha Lakhe on Nowrunning Rating: This movie does not make any pretence of being anything less than an action movie. So there are no needless song breaks or ear-shattering punches. The young villain (Bansal’s son, Kabir) is creepy and wicked. So awful, that when the ‘dhai kilo ka haath’ hits the young, wild lad, you whoop happily with others in the theater. What more do you need in an action flick? Review by Meeta on Wogma Rating: The story writing doesn’t support them in the second half. The film goes from being about the menace of the business-politic nexus to a personal story, rather abruptly. Also, all the focus on the main story, the long-long chase sequence is wrapped up all too quickly making you wonder what the fuss was all about. Speaking of which, the chase sequence (like the film) starts out engaging you completely making it a thriller worth its salt and then overstays its welcome. When the film ends though, you remember what you liked even though you are totally miffed with how it all ended. A lot of what you like has to do with what was avoided – like self-references, songs, romantic track and so on. Unfortunately, you can remember a film for what it is not, only so much.
