We suggest you take a look at our detailed ranking of Top Actors in India and Top Bollywood Actors Overseas (click on the links to read the full article).

Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan

Rank 1 Shahrukh Khan: They say Rajesh Khanna’s super-stardom cannot be matched, Salman Khan’s 5 back-to-back blockbuster record will be tough to beat and Aamir Khan has been very consistent in recent times, but the aura of Shahrukh Khan is beyond box office records. Ever since he made his debut, he has been consistently regarded as the biggest superstar in the country. In 2000 his stardom was compared to the craze around Hrithik, between 2006-2007 it was SRK vs Akshay, in 2008-09 after Ghajini and 3 Idiots it was between Aamir and SRK.. and since then it has been about Shahrukh and Salman. Yet, after all these years, a commoner from Delhi has achieved so much that he has nothing left to prove. That’s not to say he isn’t capable of breaking records, Chennai Express went on to be the biggest grosser of all time and the opening day business of Happy New Year should remain the biggest for at least a year.

The global success of Happy New Year has ensured that Shahrukh Khan tops the list once again.

  • Happy New Year – 303 cr
  • Chennai Express - 342 cr
  • Jab Tak Hai Jaan – 202 cr
  • Don 2 – 180 cr
  • Ra. One – 191 cr
  • Total - ? 1,218 cr (average ? 243.6 cr per film)
Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan

Rank 1 Aamir Khan: And guess what? We have a tie for the top spot, as the total worldwide collections of Aamir Khan films (Rs 1,218 cr) is exactly the same as that of Shahrukh.

While the other two Khans continue to hog the limelight, Aamir has been consistently delivering bigger grossers at the box office. As far as box office records are concerned, Aamir has been the one to set records that others have taken years to break. He gave the industry its first 100 crore grosser, and followed it up a 200 crore grosser – all this at a time when no other actor had even crossed the 100 crore mark at the box office. The record of 3 Idiots was only broken nearly 4 years after its release, when Chennai Express went on to collect Rs 227 crore. That same year, Dhoom 3 released and Aamir delivered the industry’s highest grosser once again. Dhoom 3 is not just the higher grosser in India, it’s also the biggest grosser in the overseas markets too. With PK scheduled to release in theatres next month, sky is the limit. It’s the combination of star power, fantastic script sense and the audience-trust in brand Aamir that has worked big time for the superstar.

  • Dhoom 3 – 470 cr (India net + overseas gross for all films)
  • Talaash – 144 cr
  • 3 Idiots – 360 cr
  • Ghajini – 162 cr
  • Taare Zameen Par – 82 cr
  • Total – ? 1,218 cr (average ? 243.6 cr per film)

Rank 3 Salman Khan: Until 2010, the problem with Salman Khan was his consistency. The films that he did for his friends and his laid-back attitude affected his career. His stardom though was intact. When he decided to cater to his audience, they came out in numbers to watch his films. In 7 films since Dabangg, he has 6 blockbusters – something that no other actor has achieved in the history of Indian Cinema.

  • Kick - 303 cr
  • Jai Ho – 149 cr
  • Dabangg 2 – 211 cr
  • Ek Tha Tiger – 262 cr
  • Bodyguard – 191 cr
  • Total - ? 1,116 cr (average ? 223.2 cr per film)

Rank 4 Hrithik Roshan: Hrithik should significantly increase the average collections of his last 5 films as his upcoming October release Bang Bang would replace one of his career’s biggest disasters Kites. He retains his fourth spot.

  • Bang Bang – 263 cr
  • Krrish 3 - 297 cr
  • Agneepath – 157 cr
  • Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara – 134 cr
  • Guzaarish - 49 cr
  • Total - ? 900 cr (average ? 180 cr per film)

Rank 5 Ranbir Kapoor: With two huge blockbusters, one critically acclaimed success and two failures, Ranbir, regarded by many as one of the best actors in the country, takes the 5th spot. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is his biggest worldwide blockbuster so far.

  • Besharam - 77 cr
  • Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – 252 cr
  • Barfi! – 145 cr
  • Rockstar – 88 cr
  • Anjaana Anjaani – 59 cr
  • Total - ? 621 cr (average ? 124.2 cr per film)

Rank 6 Ajay Devgn: The huge success of Singham Returns has helped Ajay tremendously. He has gone past Akshay and also taken his average above 100 crore per film. He awaits the release of his upcoming film Action Jackson. The film needs to collect Rs 207 cr worldwide for Ajay to beat Ranbir.

  • Singham Returns – 165 cr
  • Satyagraha – 77 cr
  • Himmatwala - 53 cr
  • Son of Sardaar - 119 cr
  • Bol Bachchan – 126 cr
  • Total - ? 540 cr (average ? 108 cr per film)

Rank 7 Akshay Kumar: The failure of OUATIMD hurt him big time. It was expected to be his first 200 crore grosser, instead it ended up as his least worldwide grosser. The combined business of OUATIMD in India and overseas is less than Boss! His June release Holiday: A Soldier is never off duty collected 138 cr worldwide.

  • Entertainment – 87 cr
  • Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty – 138 cr
  • Boss – 76 cr
  • Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara – 74 cr
  • Special 26 – 86 cr
  • Total - ? 461 cr (average ? 92.2 cr per film)

Rank 8 Saif Ali Khan: His romantic comedies have done well, but his most recent release ‘Humshakals’ was a failure worldwide. Race 2 is his biggest grosser to date. We haven’t included his latest film ‘Happy Ending’, but the disastrous performance of that film will hurt him.

  • Humshakals - 79 cr
  • Bullet Raja- 42 cr
  • Race 2 - 141 cr
  • Cocktail - 102 cr
  • Agent Vinod - 54 cr
  • Total - ? 418 cr (average ? 83.6 cr per film)

Note: Worldwide Total = India net + overseas gross. Entertainment taxes has been deducted from India business.
