Will any film cross the footfalls of HAHK or DDLJ?

Q. Will there be any movie in future which will cross the footfalls of Hum Aapke Hai Kaun, DDLJ and Gadar? – Lokesh Goel

A. It will be difficult. In the last 10 years, 3 Idiots received the highest number of footfalls for a Bollywood film and even then it struggled to come close to the footfalls of films like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, DDLJ and Gadar. There are several reasons why footfalls at theatres have reduced in the last decade or so. The audience has many more entertainment options today, as compared to 15-20 years ago. Hundreds of television channels and online video streaming websites like Youtube. Also, the ticket prices have increased quite significantly, not many families can afford to pay Rs 2000 for every movie outing. And finally, there is piracy too. Downloading and watching a movie from the internet is easy. So, unless a film is truly worth the price of a ticket, audiences prefer to stay away from theatres.

Q. If we follow Hollywood pattern, then they have three seasons in which different types of film get release, like January – March for low budget and family friendly movies, April – August  for blockbusters and High budget movies, and September – December  for Award racers, sci-fi and Horror and indie movies, what will happen if Bollywood start using the same formula? – Saket

A. Unlike Hollywood, Bollywood is almost entirely a star-driven industry. Since most big films revolve around a star, big stars prefer to release their films during holidays and most of these big holiday weekends fall in the second half of the year – which is why most big stars like Salman, SRK and Aamir have released their films between July and December.

Q. The trend of Badlapur and Action Jackson had been similar. Then why one is considered as been “liked” and another “rejected”? Is it just due to the budgets? – Ravi

A. Badlapur collected 38 crore in Week 1 and 9.5 crore in Week 2, which is a drop of 75% from first week. Action Jackson collected Rs 45 crore in Week 1 and 10.5 crore in Week 2, which is a drop of around 77%. So yes, the trend was similar, but the budget of Action Jackson was 3 times higher than Badlapur – which was Eros International’s only profit-making film after 5-6 releases! It’s also about perception, which is created by the media and trade. Good films that don’t do well at the box office, are not considered to be ’rejected’ films.

Q. I want to know that Akshay Kumar’s Singh Is Bling is confirmed for 2015 or 2016 ? - Faizan Tariq Khan

A. For now, Singh Is Bling is releasing on Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October 2015). But release dates can change anytime!

  • Yes, i agree, unlike other industries bollywood is too much obsessed with Box office collection. A film evaluated according to it’s boxoffice collection.
    When i first came Indicine i felt like an alien. Soon i realized that one can’t comment in a bollywood site without knowing box office collections of every actor’s recent movies…

    In my state,Malayalam film industry (agree it is small) nobody cares about a movies collections. In fact even a super star’s die hard fan don’t know his favorite star’e movies collection.
    For common people,a movie’s success is decided by it’s wom,running periods in theaters, and it’e entertainment value..

  • Salman has always been hyped and overcredited? This guy dosent know d a-z acting. Talent. Think of d different genre these actors had successful limelight with. Sorry Akki Salman bcos the truth is truth plus records don’t lie.
    Therefore d 3 current character portrayal stars with calmness n confidence r without a doubt SRK AAMIR and AJAY Devgan. The rest r just high salary earners with only limited roles in terms of genres but still overhyped. Imagine a cult classic like Kuch kuch hota hai Devdas Daar without SRK? Imagine a OUATIM company Hum dil de chuke sanam without an AJay Devgn? Imagine Dil hai ki manta nahi PK lagaan without Aamir khan? Honest truth is it’s a typical vice versa scenario for Hririk Akki Salman. So predictable and inert versatility to their movies in limited manner. Either an action like bang bang Dabbang partner jai ho or police police underworld saga like Akki movies.

  • no one can beat ddlj…………records……………longest running film of world………….waiting fan dilwale raees

  • Happy new year. ..name is enough to say srk stupidly. …..

  • On the daily basis we are talking that Piracy is effecting our movies in a big manner But what actions are taken by the bollywood people to stop this piracy??

  • Highest footfalls :
    SHOLAY=6.6CR
    HAHK=4.68CR
    GADAR=4.28
    DDLJ=4.07CR
    RH=3.28CR
    KKHH=3.14CR
    PK=2.85CR
    3i=2.8CR
    D3=2.6CR
    K3G=2.45CR

  • Really what happened to Bollywood after 2001 ? The last film to earn the highest footfalls was Sholay which released in 1975 and now 40 years have passed and non of the films could cross its footfalls. Sholay opened very poorly at the box office although it was released on holiday (Independence Day) and received negative reviews from critics. Sholay did poor business at the box office till 2 weeks continuously but from third week the business picked up very nicely due to positive word of mouth between the people and then it went on to create records. But now people mostly believe the stupid critics’ reviews and ignore the public’s review. Nowadays big film’s golden days will be over only after the first three days of its release. Ex: Dhoom 3’s 37% of the business was done in the first three days, Krrish 3’s 29% business was done in the first three days, Chennai Express’ 41% business was done in the first three days and Happy New Year’s 53% business was done in the first three days while Hum Aapke Hain Koun did only 0.88% of its business in one week and ran for 50 weeks+.
