Will any film cross the footfalls of HAHK or DDLJ?

Q. Will there be any movie in future which will cross the footfalls of Hum Aapke Hai Kaun, DDLJ and Gadar? – Lokesh Goel

A. It will be difficult. In the last 10 years, 3 Idiots received the highest number of footfalls for a Bollywood film and even then it struggled to come close to the footfalls of films like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, DDLJ and Gadar. There are several reasons why footfalls at theatres have reduced in the last decade or so. The audience has many more entertainment options today, as compared to 15-20 years ago. Hundreds of television channels and online video streaming websites like Youtube. Also, the ticket prices have increased quite significantly, not many families can afford to pay Rs 2000 for every movie outing. And finally, there is piracy too. Downloading and watching a movie from the internet is easy. So, unless a film is truly worth the price of a ticket, audiences prefer to stay away from theatres.

Q. If we follow Hollywood pattern, then they have three seasons in which different types of film get release, like January – March for low budget and family friendly movies, April – August  for blockbusters and High budget movies, and September – December  for Award racers, sci-fi and Horror and indie movies, what will happen if Bollywood start using the same formula? – Saket

A. Unlike Hollywood, Bollywood is almost entirely a star-driven industry. Since most big films revolve around a star, big stars prefer to release their films during holidays and most of these big holiday weekends fall in the second half of the year – which is why most big stars like Salman, SRK and Aamir have released their films between July and December.

Q. The trend of Badlapur and Action Jackson had been similar. Then why one is considered as been “liked” and another “rejected”? Is it just due to the budgets? – Ravi

A. Badlapur collected 38 crore in Week 1 and 9.5 crore in Week 2, which is a drop of 75% from first week. Action Jackson collected Rs 45 crore in Week 1 and 10.5 crore in Week 2, which is a drop of around 77%. So yes, the trend was similar, but the budget of Action Jackson was 3 times higher than Badlapur – which was Eros International’s only profit-making film after 5-6 releases! It’s also about perception, which is created by the media and trade. Good films that don’t do well at the box office, are not considered to be ’rejected’ films.

Q. I want to know that Akshay Kumar’s Singh Is Bling is confirmed for 2015 or 2016 ? - Faizan Tariq Khan

A. For now, Singh Is Bling is releasing on Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October 2015). But release dates can change anytime!

  • Also earlier good movies used to have an extended run at the BO.But today since there are at least two releases every week even blockbuster movies don’t run at Theatres for more than 2 months. If I remember Veer-Zaara was the last movie which ran for more than 25 weeks in some selected multiplexes

  • PK has recorded 3.5 crore ticket sales. In spite of tremendous rise in piracy, it has still managed to topple 3 idiots record of 3 crore footfalls by 50 lakhs! HAHK and DDLJ released when piracy was not that big. If they released today they’d record similar sales!

  • In recent time on indicine almost all QnA segment contains question related to Akshay . This is what we called “popularity”.

  • Piracy and Heavy ticket price is a big problem.
When i visited my regular torrent site , i could see Detective boymukesh at the same day of it’s release and now it’s number of download is more than 20 thousands!!!!

  • I hear about many people watching films in single screens for very low prices so hard to believe some people find it hard to afford tickets.

  • Our bhai’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan & PRDP will become highest grossers of all time even though none of his films since HAHK have.

  • Waiting for salman fans, aka closet srk fans, to start talking about srk since they’re so obsessed with him. Is someone paying them to talk about srk all teh time?

  • Thank you indicine for answering my question. Sad reality in Hollywood, RDJ, Jhonny Depp, Tom Cruise were A-listers but even they don’t guarantee a huge initial apart from their franchise films but here we judge the stars with their films collections not by their performances.

  • Waiting For SIngh Is ßling .
Bcos of 1 failure Of prbhudeva Ppl R Taking SIB lightly & Spreading negativity Around The Film .
Except from AJ , His All previous 4 movies Were Entertaining nd dats wat audience Want . Singh is bling Will Be a Big Success .

  • we all watch movies once in theater … then if its great we watch it on mobile.. no 1 can stop it… higher ticket prices… pyracy.. fast intrnet… all denting film industry….
but film industry kill themselves when they serve people with r..rajkumar.. chainnai express… happy new year.. actn jacksn etc.. once we loose hard earned money on these movies we dnt repeate mistake n smtime let gud movies go… WAKE UP BOLLYWOOD..

  • @gj007: yes i also read this piece of news that pk crossed 3idiots footfalls but could’nt believe it,for 3crs sales of ticket ,3i was way ahead of any film at that while PK is 70crs ahead of d3,also jad significant high ticket rates.I read somewhere that PK’s footfalls are around 20% more than D3. 3I trended way too better,PK got a better initial weekend n 1st week when rates r higher,so i think footfalls of 3I should be more than it.So the report that u r referring to seems dubious to me.

  • Agree with @saket,tom cruise, johnny depp all these actors are not that popular among american youth anymore..be it oblivion or the lone ranger, their average films have’nt worked at the boxoffice, don’t get off to a gud start..
But here people are too obsessed with no.
One guy above said that akki cud’nt make baby a blockbuster, arre bhai what would u have got had it been a BB?? U go to enjoy a film n at the end of d day u are not getting a single penny out of 300crs or 400crs!!

  • Singh is bling release holiday or nonholiday. No matter

100% sure movie is going to be All time biggest super duper Disaster…..

The year saw some grossing films topping the 150 ATP mark for the first time with PK leading the list as it managed to hold first weekend ticket rates all through the week. Other films which topped 150 were Queen and Haider. The lower end of the grossing films saw Jai Ho and Action Jackson as they had a huge ratio of business coming from single screens. The footfalls have come down for blockbuster films due to high ticket prices as Gadar topped 4 crore in 2001 and Hum Aapke Hai Kaun was much more than 4 crore in 1994.
