Why is the media and critics too harsh on Akshay Kumar?

Q. Hi. First of all I think this site provides genuine information with near accurate stats, my question is after the debacle of CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA is there negative vibe created for Akshay Kumar, literally every time his film is about to release the media and some critics are too harsh on him, even after bounced back after a bad phase why such negativity for Akshay? - Nirmal Behera

A. There is a saying in the industry that ‘fortunes change every Friday’. When an actor is going through a low phase there will be negativity, both in the media and trade. Its not just Akshay, but every actor / actress / director in the industry. If 2 or 3 Shahrukh Khan or Salman Khan films fail, there will be negativity against them too.

Shahrukh was ridiculed for experimenting with a film like Ra One, even though it earned more than 200 crore worldwide. Aamir’s stardom was questioned after Talaash which grossed 170 crore worldwide. Hrithik Roshan was written off after his debut, and again after Guzaarish and Kites.

But all these actors that we just mentioned, including Akshay Kumar, have an established fan-base. Flops affect them temporarily, one good film and all is well.

As for critics thrashing films, you got to remember that reviews are subjective. Not everyone will like the best of films and a select few people might have enjoyed watching Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag! Almost every big film gets ratings between 0 to 4.5 stars. Who do you believe? We say, forget the critics, if you’re unsure whether a film is worth your hard-earned money or not, ask your friends or follow our box office trends. Most films that trend well are more often than not, worth a watch!

  • Q1. Why for Dhoom 3 and Krrish 3 Media and Trade mentions Hindi, Tamil & Telugu Versions Figures? While for Ra. One, Don 2 – The King Is Back & The Dirty Picture only Hindi Versions are quoted by Media and Trade not Tamil & Telugu Versions?

  • @JC
But still you get a good guess of how any movie is on IMDB…
    and yes,i agree with u,martin d souza’s reviews are good…

  • @Arjun Kapoor i agree with you bro!!! i had asked about Lekar Hum Deewana Dil thrice..haven’t got any answer till date!!! Hope even Armaan becomes successful like his illustrious cousins RK and Kareena Kapoor Khan!!! anyways looking forward for Ek Villain and HSKD as well!!! :)

  • Indicine plz answer my ek villain question otherwise I will believe that u r scared of the Bollywood youth power.

  • Come on indicine, don’t go into a hiding ahmgai like u did fotmr that wrong verdict question.I gave u all the proofs at that time but u didn’t correct ur mistakes.ur again repeating the same mistake

  • @JC and @Babaji Martin Dsouza is a good critic as well..Even Nikhat Kazmi of TOI was a great critic..Subhash K Jha also gets it right mostly, but is quite lenient at times..Raja Sen and Rajeev Masand are the worst critics i have seen..Even i have lost faith on Taran Adarsh after ratings craps like Bar.One,Yuvraaj, JTHJ, SOTY as 4 stars and rating classics like RDB, DCH,Humtum as 1.5-2 stars!!!

  • @Indicine team..what you said made sense, but i somewhat disagree with this as well..i remember at that time SRK and Aamir sir delivered BBs in RNBDJ and Ghajini respectively and Akki Sir was expected to do well with CC2C as Tashan bombed and SIK was a Big Hit..but when it tanked,This negativity on Akki Sir started after CC2C release..people starting criticizing him..Even Vipul Shah had given a statement about this and mentioned that this negativity isn’t gonna hurt Akki Sir as he’s a One Man Industry!!!

Compared to Khans,HR or even RK..Akki Sir’s movie doesn’t arouse the same amount of buzz or curiosity..because public’s perception about AK is that his movies are normally of mindless masala genre and he’s too repetitive..they forget that he’s the same actor who also gave Jaanwar, Sangharsh, NL, SP26, OMG..this has subsequently affected his success rate and BO performance of his movies..even SP26..one of his best did not generate enough buzz because of his image as a comedy star and ended up under-performing despite ending up as a semi-hit!!!

Hopefully after the wakeup call i.e Holiday, Akki Sir delivers movies of different genres rather than being one dimensional and keep entertaining us more and bring in big numbers at BO!!! :)

  • Akshay, hrithik and ranbir are multi talented superstars…
While the others are surviving at the box office just with the help of media and their blind fan following…
It’s a universal fact that shahrukh and salman doesn’t have any special talent, they both are just over rated

  • I don’t care about Imdb ratings.look at gunday’s rating.it’s 1.2 .it was a below average film.but 1.2? ? Also, ashiqui 2 7.2? ?
Rajeev masand is strict. But dat doesn’t mean hez biased. He gave gud ratings to s26. I agree he gives low ratings to commercial film.but we cann’t blame him. Maths is a mark securing subject.similarly art film are mark securing .still, rajeev gave 3 to agneepath.which was highest for a masala by him.
Someone said akki is best in drama, romance etc etc. Grow up!

  • Dear Rockstar R.k,

Shah Rukh Khan has delivered Hits in which He has been the only selling point example Chalte Chalte, Main Hoon Naa, Don – The Chase Begins Again, Chak De! India, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Plus the consistency with which SRK has delieverd Hits is unmatched and you can’t argue on that. If SRK wouldn’t have talent then this consistency would have been impossible example:-

    2013
Chennai Express – India 3rd Biggest Hit & Net Grosser. Overseas 2nd Biggest Hit & Grosser. Worldwide 2nd Biggest Hit & Grosser.

    2012
Jab Tak Hai Jaan – India 4th Highest Net Grosser. Overseas Biggest Hit & Grosser. Worldwide 3rd Biggest Hit & Grosser.

    2011
Ra. One – India 2nd Highest Net Grosser. Overseas 2nd Biggest Hit. Worldwide 3rd Biggest Hit & Grosser.
Don 2 – The King Is Back – India 4th Highest Net Grosser. Overseas Biggest Hit & Grosser. Worldwide 4th Biggest Hit & Grosser.

    2010
My Name Is Khan – India 5th Biggest Hit & 4th Highest Net Grosser. Overseas Biggest Hit & Grosser. Worldwide 2nd Biggest Hit & Grosser.

    2008
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi – India 2nd Biggest Hit & Net Grosser. Overseas Biggest Hit & Grosser. Worldwide 2nd Biggest Hit & Grosser.

    2007
Om Shanti Om – India, Overseas & Worldwide Biggest Hit & Grosser.
Chak De! India – India 2nd Biggest Hit & Net Grosser.

And mind you period from 2010 to 2012 is considered weakest for SRK. First check facts and then do Blah Blah.

  • @nipun How can art be like maths? Maths is objective.
2+2=4 and nothing else. Noone can say 5 or 2.312.
Art is subjective and cannot be evaluated by a single critic. Some people consider Citizen Kane greatest film, some consider The Godfather the greatest film.
I am also a follower of Rajeev Masand but he is not a branded official #1 critic of the world. Every critic is biased to some extent. Afterall they too are humans who can make mistakes.

  • @flopstar khans hater have nothing to do, they are looser, no one can beat the khans, khans are only beaten by the khans

  • @nipun then why did your favorite K3 got 2.5 by Rajeev Masand when all others have given more than 3.5 stars!? Citylights and BMB got 2.5, Holiday 2, SDR got 3.5..please explain this!!! I am not saying he is a bad critic..but he’s quite off the mark most of times!!!

Also Gunday deserved 1.2..such a crap movie..survived it thanks to Arjun Kapoor who easily overshadowed Ranveer!!! even Masand gave 2 stars for it!!!

  • Best critics in my view
    1.rajeev masand
    2.anupama chopra
    3.sukanya verma
    4.subhra gupta
as for martin D souza,i have no idea .
    Worst critics:
    1.raja sen
    2.taran adarsh

  • Arjun kapoor career analysis-releases 4, hits 3 including one 100cr superhit,success rate-75%,current ranking,10th

  • Yes, I agree. Rajeev Masand, Anupama Chopra and Raja Sen are the hard headed critics. They know nothing about Indian Audience. They think they are the most intellectual critics just because they watch Hollywood movies and can speak English fluently. Every time they thrashed Rohit Shetty’s movies, but they all became huge hits at the box office. Film making is all about entertaining people and that is only what matters. You don’t need to become an Einstein to make or watch movies. I have seen them giving 1 star to films and they turn out to be huge success at the box office….In that context, I call them a failure as a critic. What’s the point of reviewing a movie when it doesn’t match up to what you are trying to convey. I think these critics should better stay off with Rohit Shetty’s, Akshay’s and typical commercial movies because they are only making themselves look dumb.

  • Akshay Kumar ends up choosing wrong films. Only he can give a Khiladi 786 after a wonderful film like Oh My God. He should be consistent and build on success of good films instead of losing credibility by doing rubbish films later.

Talaash was semi hit. Fakes of Aamir fans cannot accept Talaash did only this much.

Akshay gets less credit. He deserves praise for having guts to produce a film like OMG but he got nothing. Same media will label Aamir and Hirani genius when they copy the same concept in PK.

  • @sid original:i have said u earlier. GET YOUR POINT RIGHT.rajeev masand gave 3 stars for k3. I even didn’t like SDR. But some critics gave it gud ratings. As i have said earlier that everyone doesn’t give same kinda ratings. Also,he gave bmb 2.5 and also a few others gave low scores. When rajeev masand was asked,he said that it was manipulative. And he is a strict critics.so.2.5 stars is gud score. He gave 2 stars to Guzaarish. But i am okay. Most of the times my reviews match wid him except in a few cases like Guzaarish,BMB,SDR,3 idiots(got 3 stars frm rajeev). .so i follow him.

  • @js:i actually didn’t mean that . I meant dat art film are easily more preferable than regular masala. .for example let’s take example of agneepath vs udaan. Both were great in their own genre.but udaan is more preferable.
And yes, rajeev masand also does mistakes as hez a human being. But still, over all hez a gud critics.

  • if the audience in India didn’t like Talaash for Aamir Khan, I’d say: their taste is really bad!!!!!!!!! or they don’t like “intelligent” films, or probably because the Indian nations don’t believe in Ghosts, even Shahrukh’s Paheli failed at the box office because it was about a “Ghost”, or maybe they don’t like some thriller films except the “entertaining” ones, and these films are not “entertaining” for them

  • @Deepu How talaash is semi-hit only??It’s budget was only 45crore and it did 95crore.so how it isnot a hit??And by the way it was superhit in overseas. So just get ur fact ryt before talking

  • @nipun
Gunday got 1.6 bcoz bangladeshi people have found it offensive to their independence history and have come in huge no. voting 0 or 1 for gunday…u can check it on imdb.
As for Aashiqui2,it collected 85crs,so many have loved it and as u said opinions differ from person to person
I did’nt liked it that much, but i watched it on tv again and i somewhat liked it…

  • @nipun u r biased towards hr. even oso rajive masnd given 3 stars. u r just kid like hr . oso is the first masala film to get 3 star from rajive masand

  • As I have already said nipun is pseudo intellectual.how can he insult people for loving aashiqui2.he had similarly insulted everyone for loving dhoom3,chennai express, dabangg,ek tha tiger in that class vs mass debate
