Udta Punjab has done well in its first weekend at the box office, as the film was running at high occupancy throughout the weekend. The growth from Friday to Sunday was limited, but since the opening itself was above par, the film had a healthy weekend at the box office.
The Abhishek Chaubey film still has a long way to go before it can recover its cost. The film doesn’t have much value as far as the satellite rights is concerned, so a huge chunk of the 45 crore investment has to come from theatrical business.
On the positive side of things, the film has two open weeks at the box office, before the release of Salman Khan’s Sultan. If the hold is around 5 crore today (Monday), it’ll mean the film is set for a long and successful run. Around 4-4.5 crore would be a normal drop. Anything less than 4 will be alarming.
The first weekend business is the highest for a film starring Shahid Kapoor in the lead. Udta Punjab is around 10% higher than his previous best (Rs 30.7 crore total of R.. Rajkumar), but this wasn’t exactly a solo film because the film benefitted from the presence of Diljit Dosanjh who is the biggest star in Punjab.

Well, Udta Punjab is a very good film..The makers said that this is kind of film which will stay with u after u exit the cinema halls and that is what has happened with me…It is indeed a film to stay with u till a long time…people who have an appetite for such dark films will definitely relish on this one…Shahid Kapoor was fantastic..he has once again proved his versatility..Alia bhatt was phenomenal..A very matured act at such an early age deserves to be applauded..Diljit Dosanjh is the biggest surprise package in the film. It seems like u cannot imagine anyone in that role except him…And My favourite kareena Kapoor Khan is a breathe of fresh air..she looked damn gorgeous too…I would like to thank and congratulate the makers for bringing out such kind of a film to us…

And Haider was on holiday but It was having big competition nd only 1200 screen size. Also match the screen size of Drishym nd Haider.
