Udta Punjab has performed very well on its opening day at the box office. The film has collected Rs 10.05 crore on Friday, which is excellent for an adult-rated dark film.
The advantage of the controversy seems to be around 50%, as the film would’ve probably opened to around 6-6.5 crore even with excellent reviews to support it.
The film has performed at major cities. North India was excellent, with East Punjab circuit leading the race, followed by the NCR region. The other major cities were good too, while the smaller cities were ‘above par’ for a film like ‘Udta Punjab’. Apart from the controversy, the presence of Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh has given a big boost to collections in North India.
The first day collections is exactly the same as Shahid Kapoor’s highest non-holiday opener R.. Rajkumar which collected 10.1 crore on its opening day. Shandaar is his highest, but it released on a national holiday and collected 13.1 crore. The advantage of a national holiday is about 35-40%. So clearly, Udta Punjab is higher than what Shaandaar would’ve collected on a working day.
As far as the highest opening days of 2016 is concerned, Udta Punjab makes it to the list at the 6th position. It’s the 5th highest Hindi opening of the year.

10.05 cr is good opening. Udta punjab is such a outstanding movie. Shahid and Alia have still the show with their top notch performance. Film maker like Abhishek chubby should be incourage for making such a outstanding movie. This type of movie will really really increase the quality of bollywood. This year is become great due to numbers of good quality movies.

I watched it 2day after downloading.. Excellent movie….Freedom of expression and patience was tested and it proved highly positive!
Just because the film opened more than what you predicted does not mean you should use 80% of the article acknowledging it’s bigger opening due to Controversy (50%??? Woow guys cool down.. Disagree!!)… and Punjab superstar Dilijit Presence…, well from day 2 onwards collections shall be because of the content, superb acting by Shahid Alia Dilijit Kareena and youth appeal factor.

House full 3 Friday collection official 60 Lakhs. Today 80 lakhs. This shows if Jag Jas was released with Housefull 3 it will not have crossed 60 cr. Lucky Akshay very Lucky . MD trailer out next week ?
@ aisha at 4:39 pm: Rightly said and agreed. Even if we assume that the controversy helped it to earn let us say 3 crores more on day 1 that factor cannot just keep continue bringing in the audience. If it is just the controversy factor then it should show a drop of those 3 crores on day 2 itself.
Whatever it earns on day 2 and onwards it has to be because the audience has appreciated the content and WoM is positive.
And while controversy factor may have initially helped the movie there were factors like leaking of the copy having a negative impact too. Plus in such situations where there are two opinions (i.e. whether or not Punjab is really facing that big a problem and whether censor board was justifed or not) then extreme positions are taken on both sides. While there would have been people who wouldn’t have watched the movie originally but then watched it due to controversy then there would have been some audience too (who were favoring the censor board and defending conditions in punjab state) who would have skipped this movie.
So this discussion of how much the controversy helped actually (i.e. 10% or 50%) is very subjective. The collections on day 2 should put an end to that discussion.
