Now that the clash between Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale is confirmed, the battle for box office supremacy has begun. Shah Rukh Khan has planned a extravagant promotional strategy for his much-awaited film directed by Rohit Shetty. And given the power that he commands in the industry, the actor has booked most of the important theatres to showcase his Christmas release.
Eros, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the team behind Bajirao Mastani too are quietly confident of their film, which promises to be a modern day classic.
The trade, though, is anxious. When two big films clash at the box office, the more deserving film can sometimes be the film that suffers. For example, when Lagaan and Gadar: Ek Prem Katha released together in 2001, an all-time classic like Lagaan was the under-performer and the more commercial (and universally appealing) Gadar went on to be the biggest grosser in the history of Indian Cinema.
A trade expert who doesn’t want to be named, talks about Shah Rukh Khan using his clout to block book single-screen theatres across the country: They (Dilwale) have the clout. No one says no to Shah Rukh Khan. Remember when his Jab Tak Hai Jaan had clashed with Ajay Devgn’s Son Of Sardaar over Christmas in 2010? Ajay was left with little choice in terms of theatrical outlets.
Taran Adarsh: I don’t think Dilwale or Bajirao Mastani will shift from their December 18 release date. The respective producers are sticking to the release date. Bajirao Mastani has already commenced promotions, while the trailer of Dilwale will be attached to Prem Ratan Dhan Payo. In any case, the release of these two biggies is timed during the Christmas and New Year vacations and I genuinely feel, two good films can easily co-exist in today’s times. It’s a great period, with holidays aplenty, so why postpone?
Atul Mohan (Super Cinema Magazine): We have enough number of screens to accommodate both the films. Suggesting to anyone to bow out to make room for the other can appear to be a biased move. Agreed that the stakes are high but both the producers are strong and know the business more than we know. The point to be noted here is that 18 December is not a festive week, like Eid or Diwali. The business will be elevated in the following week when Christmas holidays begin. May the better and bigger film do big business.

Rohit Shetty’s next directorial venture starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon has upped the anticipation levels after the team launched an exclusive sneak peek into the film. Not just that, about a week back, many media representatives from all over the nation were taken to the sets of Dilwale and shown another exclusive 20 minutes video from the film. And whoever’s watched the video can’t stop appreciating it.
Cut to the real picture. While Dilwale is creating all the buzz, it’s now known to all that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Bajirao Mastani too is releasing on the same day as Dilwale. That means this December 18, Bollywood is all set for a Titanic clash.

The film, unlike other masala potboilers, went ahead to become the highest grosser of all times back then, beating Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots. Also, it received a lot of love and adulation from the masses. Now picture this. Dilwale is not just a Rohit Shetty-SRK association. It has the powerful SRK-Kajol combo which can and has never gone wrong in the history of Bollywood. Plus, there’s Varun Dhawan, who’s possibly the biggest Gen-Y star currently. Why we say so? Varun’s the only new generation actor who’s single handedly managed to give a string of five consecutive successes. Beat that. Also, there’s Kriti who turned heads with her stellar act in Heropanti. Hence, Dilwale is rather in the safe territory for sure and there’s hardly any chance of the film going wrong. Even if the film clashes with Bajirao Mastani, the hype around the film will easily take it to the safe zone in a matter of less than a week’s time. We bet.
Bajirao’s risky!
However harsh it sounds, Bajirao Mastani although looks really interesting on paper, it’s albeit a very risky affair. Why we say so? Oodles of money pumped in for the film, to make sure it’s look and grandeur is maintained. With a budget of over hundred crore and still counting (The VFX is on!), Bajirao Mastani will suffer a huge blow if it clashes with the SRK starrer. Not only will it lose out on screens, but it will also see a serious dip in its collections. Given that it’s anyway a risky proposition, Bajirao Mastani still has the chance to recover its money if it comes out as a solo release. Despite the content of the film, it will necessarily get a grand opening, only if it releases on another date. And if the film thrives on good content, then there’s no stopping it. Will the same happen if it clashes with Dilwale? Think, think!
Star power!
Bajirao Mastani has Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra leading the pack. Despite being stars in their own spaces, neither a DP, RS or PC can match up to the level of euphoria and hype that a Rohit Shetty film bringing back the powerful SRK-Kajol combo calls for. Plus, even Varun is a safer bet at the box office than Ranveer. Why? Compare their career-graph and their movies’ box office incomes and you’ll have your answer. While people might still argue that SLB entered the 100 crore club with the same lead pair, one must understand that Ram Leela released around Diwali and was a grand solo release. Plus, the scenario wasn’t as risky as it is with Bajirao Mastani. And eventually, it’s the star power of an actor which brings the audiences to the multiplexes and the single screens to watch their films. And there, Dilwale can have no competition. Period.
The Marketing!
Bajirao Mastani’s team is planning to take the marketing brigade to another level altogether. But no matter how much they try, it’s very difficult to get past the marketing genius that one man in the Dilwale team possesses. Thy name’s Shah Rukh Khan. Known to heavily promote his film, SRK and Co will leave no stone unturned to make Dilwale the biggest film of the year, also this being SRK’s only release in 2015. Plus the appreciation and feedback the team has received from the mini-clips and the video footages they showed to the audiences, they’re doubly sure about their product and this can’t be competed with. Also, the film has already become a craze in the Gulf (which is one of the most prominent circuits) and advance bookings have started almost one and half months in advance for Dilwale, an initiative which is a first of its kind. All this just goes on to prove the tremendous star power that the entire Dilwale commands. Even Ranveer, Deepika and Priyanka would agree!
While the gossip corridors of Bollywood have been abuzz with fleeting rumours of Eros planning to move their film to a later date, also because the film involves heavy special effects and has still not been wrapped up, we’re sure it will be a better idea to rather have a solo release on a later date than clash with the monumental film and lose out on the huge money they’ve piped in for their most ambitious project.

I never say that Dilwale is a small film, no definitely it’s a big movie, but it’s a masala movie, and we all know that such movies never make 300cr b/c there is no content on such movie, it’s an entertainment movie, and expecting a content from Rohit Shetty is another joke.
Second BM is movie based on Maratha Warrior, so definitely in Maharashtra everyone prefers BM over Dilwale. And we all know that Maharashtra plays a big role in Box Office collection. So even if BM have negative WOM than also everyone in Maharashtra give preference to BM. And definitely we can expect content in BM. And if BM WOM is high than only God can save Dilwale..

I have seen a lot of articles saying that Dilwale will take all the money and Bajirao Mastani will barely get any or crash and burn. I think that saying such things is way too early. It is true that the Srk and Kajol pairing is unbeatable, and it takes so long in-between films for them to pair up, that fans flip out when they do finally come together. That is why there is no doubt in my mind that Dilwale will take the lead. However, that doesn’t mean that Bajirao Mastani can’t hold it’s own next to Dilwale. Ranveer, Deepika, and Priyanka are not unskilled actors, all three can do more than catch your attention, they can hold it!
Most importantly these two films are like night and day. I love the Srk and Kajol pairing, and have been hoping they would at least do a cameo in each other’s films. However, I really like the chemistry between Ranveer and Deepika as well. I am on board for just about any story Srk and Kajol are ready to tell, but the story of Bajirao Mastani really intrigues me. I like the humor and fast paced action of Rohit Shetty, but I love the intensity and attention to detail of Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
When I saw that Srk and Kajol were in another film with more than a cameo, I was too excited for words. Their behind the scenes videos really made me want to see more. I loved the clothes, the sets, the jokes and what little I could see of the music numbers. Then I saw the Deewani Mastani song, and my mouth fell open when I saw the luxuriousness of the palace! I loved every minute of it, the song was intoxicating, the clothes were exotic, the dance was fascinating, Priyanka made you want to see what she was seeing, Ranveer looked powerful, and Deepika showed me why Bajirao fell in love with Mastani.
Both films have way too many good things going for them, for either one to be snubbed. I really couldn’t tell you which one I would see first.
