Several actors, music directors and other film personalities have been picked this year, to receive India’s top civilian awards – Padma Bhushan (3rd highest) and Padma Shri (4th highest) – today, as India celebrates its 60th Republic day.
Here is the list of winners
1) Zohra Segal (actress) – Padma Vibhushan
2) Aamir Khan (actor) – Padma Bhushan
3) Ilaiyaraja (music director) – Padma Bhushan
4) A R Rahman (music director, singer) – Padma Bhushan
5) Rekha (actress) – Padma Shri
6) Saif Ali Khan (actor) – Padma Shri
7) Resul Pookutty (sound designer) – Padma Shri
Thought the likes of Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan – to name a few – were more deserving of the Padma Shri, their achievement and contributions to Hindi cinema over the years has been a lot more compared to someone like Saif Ali Khan.
Rekha should have gotten the award much earlier, her contribution to Indian cinema has been immense. Ditto for Ilaiyaraja, who was one of the men who introduced A R Rahman to the world.
What the stars had to say
Aamir Khan – I’m so happy to receive this unique honour. The first thing that comes to my mind is my mother’s smiling face,
Saif Ali Khan – I am very proud and honored to have received this honor. I would like to thank my family and loved ones who have been there for me and the industry for supporting me . I would particularly like to thank Imtiaz Ali, Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar, Ramesh Taurani, Farhan Akhtar, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Siddharth Anand, Kunal Kohli and Vishal Bhardwaj for having faith in me and making me who I am today.
A R Rahman – I’m overwhelmed that I have received the honour at the same time that music composer Ilayaraja has received it. It is a great personal statement for me. He has played for my father Shekher, and I have played for Ilayaraja Sir. It is a family thing for me
