Top 5 Khan films that deserved better at the box office

Article by Indicine reader Abhishek Sharma

The 3 Khans (Aamir, Shahrukh and Salman) have been ruling the Indian Box Office for more than two decades now.  All three have been consistently successful and delivered numerous hits over the years. While few of their ‘bad’ films have done exceptionally well at the box-office, some of their exceptionally good films have tanked.

Here is my list of 5 such movies, featuring the 3 legends, which deserved a lot more success than what they got.

Andaz Apna Apna1. Andaz Apna Apna: A mad comedy, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, which featured Aamir and Salman together for the first and probably the last time. The movie has attained cult status over the years. All characters and dialogues are so popular now, that it’s hard to believe that the film didn’t do well at the box-office. Imagine if Andaaz Apna Apna released today? Uui Maa.

2. Swades: This brilliantly directed patriotic saga highlighting the issue of brain drain was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker after the Oscar nominated Lagaan. Criticized for it’s length and lack of entertainment value, Swades was a rare failure for Shahrukh Khan, who as Mohan Bhargav, delivered arguably the best performance of his career.

Akele Hum Akele Tum3. Akele Hum Akele Tum: Mansoor Khan and Aamir Khan came together for the third time (and most likely their last outing together) after the super success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. It was a superb portrayal of a sensitive relationship between husband and wife. The performances by Aamir, Manisha and even the child actors were outstanding. This movie has some of the best romantic tracks composed by Anu Malik.

Khamoshi4. Khamoshi – The Musical: Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut was nothing short of a classic. The musical plot was unique and wonderfully executed. Salman, Manisha, Nana, Seema Biswas and Helen were fabulous. Also the songs composed by Jatin Lalit lived upto the musical theme. Despite all these ingredients, Khamoshi remained Khamosh at the box office.

Dil Se5. Dil Se: Yet another fantastic terror based movie by Mani Rathnam, after the success of Roja and Bombay, which were based on similar themes. Manisha Koirala, unfortunately, is featuring in the list for the third time. The movie was stylishly shot and A.R. Rahman compositions for Dil Se were probably his best to date.

That’s my list of the Top 5 Khan films that deserved better at the box-office. One of my personal favorites, Jaan-e-Mann, couldn’t make it. Other films that deserved better are London Dreams, Phir Milenge, Anjaam and Mann.

Do let me know your views. Any other film that I should have included in the list?

  • Tere Naam was a successful movie. It was not a blockbuster hit and that was probably because of its sad climax. But the movie brought Salman back in business. So it cannot be considered as a failure.
Mangal Pandey too had a huge opening but the movie lacked in content.

  • Little poem 4 criminal The great taklu Sallu mallu lallu ullu jhallu

    Dostøn zarur aik din aiyga……

    Srk sallu pe gari charhaiga.

Sallu being human being human chillaiga.

Aur apnay kye pe boht pachtaiga.

    Phir srk usko bataiga.

Keh DoN se jo takraiga wo gari se kuchal jai ga.

  • For me, it would be…
    1) Andaz Apna Apna
    2) Jaan-E-Mann
    3) Mann
    4) Akele Hum Akele Tum
    5) Khamoshi
I am yet to watch Swades, Dil Se, Anjaam & Phir Milenge so I didn’t count them in the list. Also, London Dreams was a good film but I didn’t make it into my top 5 list.

  • Mujhe bohot dukh howa yeh dekh kar k SWADES box office par nahi chali, jab Dabang, Ready , Ek tha Tiger Bol bachan jeisi bakwas films hit hoti hain. kia log sirf Mirch masala wali films hee dekhna pasand krte hain?? jab ek bakwas film hit hojati hai to producers aur directors ko moqa mil jata hai usi tarah k 100 bakwas films banane ka. Agar Paheli, mangal Pandey, Swades jeisi films Box office par chalti to Really aaj hamare society mey bohot change aaskta tha. logon ko kuch seekhne ko milta . lekin logon ko South remakes dekhna acha lgta hai. btw SRK is King of Kings. Amir also good. but Salman , i think usey Actor nahi hona chahye tha uski awaz baccho wali aur Acting Stage walon jeisi hai.

  • I think almost above 90% Indians are unaware of what a true good film is because they don’t like films like films such as Dil Se(1998),Anjaam(1994),Swades(2004)Mann(1999) but like to see such absurd films like Dabang(2010),JTHJ(2011),Karan Arjun(1995)Ready(2011) etc etc.According to me along with Anjaam,Dil Se and Swades,Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa(1994) is another good Srk-film yet underrated while Aamir’s 1947:Earth(1998) is another underrated film along with Akele Hum Akele Tum and Mann. While Salman’s Ek Ladka Ek Ladki(1992) should deserve in this categary.

  • i dont want 2 comnt about any other movie in d above list….but swades was jst awesum…..! is simply due 2 d indian audience dat it faild in d box office…!..bcoz d audience lack d sense of of jst appreciating d soul nd moral of d film….!..dis is shameful…!
