We update this popular article on the Top 3 grossers of each month with films that are scheduled to release in 2017. With one month to go in 2016, we also analyse which films made it to the Top 3 and those that didn’t.
Movies that have topped each month this year have been highlighted in brown colour.
January: Airlift became the highest grosser of January, beating the collections of Agneepath and Jai Ho. Next year, it’ll be Ok Jaanu and the two big films SRK’s Raees and Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil. The chances of making it to the Top 3 reduces quite considerably because of the clash, but if one film turns out to be poor and the other finds acceptance, it could top the month next year.

February: Neerja became the 2nd highest February grosser of all time. We have Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB 2 and Vishal Bhardwaj’s Ragoon next year. It’s one of the two months in the year that doesn’t have a 100 crore grosser along with March.
- Gunday (78 cr) - Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor
- Neerja (76 cr) – Sonam Kapoor
- My Name Is Khan (73 cr) - Shahrukh Khan
March: Kapoor & Sons became the highest grosser of March. ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ is the biggest release of March 2017 – will it become the first 100 crore grosser of March?
- Kapoor & Sons (75 cr) – Sidharth Malhotra
- Race (63 cr) – Saif Ali Khan
- Queen (62 cr) – Kangana Ranaut
April: FAN was a huge disappointment this year, but made it to the Top 3. We have big films lined up for release in the ‘IPL month’ next year. There is Ranbir – Katrina’s much-delayed Jagga Jasoos and the magnum opus ‘Baahubali 2’ which should easily top the month.
- Housefull 2 (116 cr) - Akshay Kumar
- 2 States (102 cr) – Arjun Kapoor
- FAN (85 cr) - Shah Rukh Khan
May: No Changes this year, as Azhar and Sarbjit were big failues. We have Ajay Devgn’s Baadhshao and Arjun Kapoor’s Half Girlfriend, both of which could make it to the Top 3.
- Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (189 cr) – Ranbir Kapoor
- Tanu Weds Manu Returns (151 cr) – Kangana Ranaut
- Gabbar Is Back (87 cr) – Akshay Kumar
June: Housefull 3 failed this year. Next year there is Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Raabta in June. It’s a foregone conclusion that Salman Khan’s Tubelight should top June in just 4-5 days!
- Rowdy Rathore (134 cr) – Akshay Kumar
- Ready (121 cr) – Salman Khan
- Holiday (113 cr) – Akshay Kumar
July: Sultan came second this year, falling just 20 crore short of Bajrangi Bhaijaan, but July has been all about Salman Khan. All his last three Eid releases are in the Top 3. The only other actor apart from Aamir Khan (December) to dominate a month. As he leaves July and targets June next year, he leaves others like Tiger Shroff’s Munna Michael with no chance to make it to the Top 3.
- Bajrangi Bhaijaan (321 cr) – Salman Khan
- Sultan (301 cr) – Salman Khan
- Kick (233 cr) – Salman Khan
August: Mohenjo Daro was a disaster, Rustom did well but failed to beat Salman’s Bodyguard. The other two are way ahead.
- Chennai Express (227 cr) - Shahrukh Khan
- Ek Tha Tiger (199 cr) - Salman Khan
- Bodyguard (145 cr) – Salman Khan
September: MS Dhoni: The Untold Story made it to the second spot this year. Next year we have the big release ‘Judwaa 2’ starring Varun – Jacqueline – Taapsee, which has an excellent release date.
- Dabangg (140 cr) - Salman Khan
- MS Dhoni (133 cr) – Sushant Singh Rajput
- Barfi! (106 cr) – Ranbir Kapoor
October: Both Diwali releases failed to make it to the Top 3 this year, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil did well, Shivaay was a big disappointment. In 2017 there are two big films, both releasing on the same Diwali day – Golmaal 4 and Robot 2.0 (only Hindi collections will be included).

- Bang Bang (181 cr) - Hrithik Roshan
- Ra.One (125 cr) – Shahrukh Khan
November: The month of November has been dull this year, no major star film, the rest have been rejected. It’s Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati next year, the film will have to make it to the Top 2 if it has to recover costs!

- Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (213 cr) – Salman Khan
- Jab Tak Hai Jaan (120 cr) - Shahrukh Khan
December: The Christmas weekend has been dominated by Aamir Khan over the years. Stars like Akshay Kumar (Tees Maar Khan), Shahrukh Khan (Don 2) and Salman Khan (Dabangg 2) have tried their luck, but Aamir is in a league of his own in December. Last year, Shah Rukh tried his luck once again, but failed with Dilwale. Ranveer’s Bajirao Mastani did much better, but failed to beat 3 Idiots. It’ll be Aamir vs Aamir once again this year, as he would be targeting the record of Dhoom 3 at the very least. But if there is one man in the industry, who you would place your bet on beating the total of PK, it would be Aamir himself. Strong content, of course, will be the key.

First let him cross 59 cr LT in clash then think about crossing Airlift(which if done will be only RAESS).
U can check my prediction about KAABIL I.e 45.8 cr & I m damn sure I will be 100% accurate.

In January, Airlift record is safe as long as one of Raees or Kaabil does not turn out to be poor while other very well made.
February- Usually big films don’t release a lot during Feb-April, so Jolly LLB 2 can dominate this month for a good long period just like Housefull 2 in April. My expectation is 110 cr for JLLB 2.
March- Badrinath ki Dulhania will top for sure. 100 cr grosser for sure.
April- Bahubali 2 on its way, Housefull 2’s five year long record will end with this one. Expecting 180 cr.
May- Half Girlfriend will make it to Top 3 but Top 2 looks uncertain. Half Girlfriend is not a great story to turn out a big hit like 2 States. Opening will be huge due to star value(shraddha) and songs but it may be difficult in the long run. As for Baadshao, there is not any big chance to enter Top 3.
June- Tubelight will rule it. 300 cr+ for sure. On the other hand, TEPK can replace Rowdy Rathore if it gets government support and becomes a big film.
July- No change in Top 3 until a Salman film comes.
August- Akshay Kumar’s Crack is the biggest August release next month. There is a chance to enter the Top 3 by replacing Bodyguard, apart from that no big change next year.
September- If ‘The Ring’ releases this month, then it has full potential to become the top grosser, replacing Dabanng.
October- Either 2.0 or Golmaal 4 must go solo on Diwali, replacing Ra.One is for sure. And Bang Bang can be matched though it’s not easy and the film has to be favourable- music, marketing and most importantly solid content to cross Happy New Year(204 cr). I would personally bet on 2.0 to have an edge in achieving that.
November- No change.
December- Even in the worst case, Tiger Zinda Hai will enter the Top 3.
