The Young Brigade of Bollywood: Who is the next superstar?

There are two groups of competition in Bollywood. The first group consists of established stars like Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan and Hrithik Roshan. With years of hard work, success, failures and blockbusters behind them, these stars have firmly established themselves as bankable stars in every nook and corner of the country.

The second group is the younger brigade. The main players are Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Shahid Kapoor, Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Sushant Singh Rajput and Arjun Kapoor. Much like the established stars, there is tremendous competition between the younger stars too.

The big question is, which of these stars can go on to replace the established stars in the industry and who amongst them has the potential to make it big in the future.

Our analysis:

Ranbir Kapoor

What works: His acting talent is his biggest strength, followed by his fan-following among the urban youth. The fact that some of the best directors in the industry like Rajkumar Hirani, Karan Johar and Imtiaz Ali are keen on casting him in their films, will also be a huge confidence booster for the actor.

What doesn’t work: His choice of films has let him down in the last couple of years. He has attempted to do films belonging to different genres and some of them with limited appeal, something that has resulted in loss of some amount of his equity among his fans. Also, his appeal towards the masses is limited.

Future prediction: He may be facing flak for the kind of films that he has chosen, but as cliched as it might sound ‘form is temporary, but class is permanent’. His future films like Tamasha, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Sanjay Dutt biopic seems promising enough to take him back to the big league.

Chances of Ranbir Kapoor making it to the big league: 9 on 10.

Ranveer Singh

What works: A talented actor who can cut across the mass audience as well as appeal to the multiplex audience. Ranveer has also played a range of different characters on screen and has built a loyal fanbase for himself. With the right attitude and choice of films, he has the potential to make it to the big league.

What doesn’t work: His energy and over-enthusiasm can get irritating at times. His fashion sense is one of the weirdest among the lot and his apparels express more than impress. In short, it’s his off-screen persona that has created negativity around him.

Future prediction: He has had his share of films that have gone wrong like ‘Kill Dil’, ‘Ladies vs Ricky Bahl’ and ’Lootera’. However, Ranveer has also been appreciated for his performances in almost all his films. The keenly-awaited ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ has not been a huge commercial success, but Ranveer’s performance has been appreciated by most. His forthcoming ’Bajirao Mastani’ is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Industry sources claim it’s his best performance to date.

Chances of Ranveer Singh making it to the big league: 8 on 10.

Shahid Kapoor

What works: A versatile actor, excellent screen-presence, a great dancer and one of the best looking actors in the industry – Shahid Kapoor has everything going for him, he is the perfect package to make it to the big league.

What doesn’t work:  He has always been considered the best bet to make it big, but for some reason, his films have under-performed at the box office. His choice of films has been extremely poor and some films that he rejected, have gone on to be major hits. His attitude and mood swings have also been questioned.

Future prediction: With ‘Haider’ winning him huge appreciation and with films like ‘Shandaar’ and ‘Udta Punjab’ in the pipeline, Shahid Kapoor is readying himself for bigger things in the industry. He just needs one big hit to turns things around for him. It also remains to be seen if marriage will prove to be lucky for the actor.

Chances of Shahid Kapoor making it to the big league: 8.5 on 10.

Varun Dhawan

What works: A versatile actor who reminds us of Govinda and Salman Khan. When it comes to the luck factor, his career could be compared to Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Everything that Varun has touched so far, has turned into box office gold.

What doesn’t work: His personality and screen presence isn’t the best when compared to his contemporaries like Sidharth Malhotra and Ranbir Kapoor. His dialogue delivery has been severely criticised and rightly so. When sharing the screen with better actors, Varun faces the risk of being overshadowed. Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Badlapur, for example.

Future prediction: The biggest test for Varun Dhawan will come when one of his films fails at the box office. But until then, he has one safe film in the form of Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale and then the massive challenge of living upto expectations in Karan Malhotra’s Shhuddhi, where he has replaced mega stars like Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan. Plenty of potential to make it big in the industry and he can only improve as an actor from here.

Chances of Varun Dhawan making it to the big league: 8 on 10.

Sidharth Malhotra

What works: His personality and his presence is enough for his fans to drool over him. He also enjoys a huge fan following amongst his female audience and has the potential to be the ‘next angry young man’ on screen.

What doesn’t work: He has a long way to go both as an actor and in the dancing department.

Future prediction: He seems to understand what works for him in terms of characters that he plays on screen and hence his choice of films has been great so far. Brothers looks like another 100 crore+ grosser and will definitely help him create a fanbase amongst the masses.

Chances of Sidharth Malhotra making it to the big league: 7 on 10.

Arjun Kapoor

What works: Arjun Kapoor enjoys a decent following amongst the single screen audience.

What doesn’t work:  His personality is the weakest among the younger generation of actor. He has also failed to establish a fanbase for himself. His carefree and loud attitude at times works against him.

Future prediction:  He needs to be careful when it comes to career choices. Tevar, which was pitched as a 100 crore film, and sold for an exorbitant price, tanked without a trace at the box office.

Chances of Arjun Kapoor making it to the big league: 5 on 10.

Sushant Singh Rajput

What works: Talented actor and given his television background, he reminds us of Shahrukh Khan during his younger days. Like SRK, he has opted to do different films at the beginning of his career (Kai Po Che and Detective Byomkesh Bakshy).

What doesn’t work: Unlikely to hold universal appeal, especially at mass centres.

Future prediction: With the revenue from multiplex business increasing quite significantly each year, popularity in mass centres is no longer as important as it was a couple of decades ago. He has a few interesting films like MS Dhoni biopic, under a terrific director like Neeraj Pandey.

Chances of Sushant making it to the big league: 6 on 10.

  • Sid Sid & Sid Ofcourse <3 He has all the qualities of Becoming the next Big Thing Of Bollywood :* Perfect Man He is *_* His all Movies are Super Hit (y) He doesn't panic in choosing his Movies. He is so Sensible :) I Just Love Him To the Moon & Back <3

  • I voted for Varun though Shahid is equally as important as Varun. but I think varun is the youngest generation though Shahid also comes younger generation.otherwise Shahid is equally/more talented than varun in terms of Acting as well as Dancing.

After decade flop jodi(salman+amir) like amur-prem that exactly reminds me of sidharth+arjun kapoor of this decade.and both of them are papa’s spoon fed kids now a days are feeding by south pirated copy remake/Raju’s controversial movies/Brand dhoom like life saviour giants, lol.

  • Sidharth Malhotra is the best actor I have ever seen! Love his screen presence and Dialogue delivery! He is definitely rhe NEXT BIGGG THING!!! ???

  • I think my only issue with the ranking is the fact that Shahid has been acting for 12 years and is still just on the “most promising” list…The “most promising” term can be a misnomer, because it is best suited for new actors, yet Shahid is more established than many of them as you observed but at the same time I understand why he’s there and as long as he’s acting and doing stuff is concerned, he still got a chance to make to the big league.

  • advantage of sid malhotra is he is calm…. not over ambitious ..he got best voice quality in young actors…
so he will survive long…n later parts will get tremendous stardome…

  • @indicine Where is emraan hashmi?? He is age 2 years older than Ranbir /shahid etc.

Media backs Kapoor star-kids that doesn’t mean you should also back them!!!!

Total hits and success of these so called youngistaan myths are equal to total Hits of emraan hashmi. He also has some good films lined up!!!!..

@Arjun floppistan Hak, rn are much better than ur floppy expresionless arjun kapoor films.

And @indicine , let these new actors succeed with new heroine, small banners etc.

This expresionless arjun kapoor hasn’t even done a film outside yrf/dharma which has become successful!!..

And ranveer singh is the most worthless actor of bollywood.

Plz take a note into it.

  • Ranbir has the best chance to be the next Superstar amongst all actors in thelist because has has got the talent and media support as he always on the news.
BTW I agree with the fan fallowing thing. Ranbir is a great actor in a different level from Varun and Ranvir and the likes Sid. He has a lot of roles he doesn’t click with and it makes him seem even more out of place. But yeah, he’s definitely a fan-favorite and I totally understand that as well. I wish Ranbir did more serious roles. I really like watching him amongst the youth actors.

    Ranbir will bounce back soon.

  • All these actor’s films have worked due to heavy promotion or presence of some good-looking heroine.

@indicine it is not easy to give hits with new actresses.

Jagga jasoos will be All Time Disaster like Bombay velvet and so will be Shuddhi!!!

And arjun kapoor’s nect film is also some useless rom-com with aunty kareena which will flop too.

And if you are ignoring emraan hashmi because his recent 5 films have not opened well, thats because of low promotion or less screen-count!!.

See what Kill dil did , tevar , Fanny , etc . They too opened lower than emraan’s films. And dil dhadakne do is ensemble multistarrer film. Inspite of it it flopped badly at box office!! Bajirao mastani will also flop due to dilwale!

  • Shahid kapoor is such a flop actor. He clashed against Greek god Hrithiks Bang bang. Bang bang became blockbuster while Haider flop. Also in terms of looks Hrithik was so stylish and cool in Bang bang, and Shahid looked so stupid with that beard, like a sadhu baba. Now Shahid being compared with kids haha.

  • I like Ranveer Singh and Siddharth Malhotra in the list.
But when it comes to stardom and potential to become a big star, this should be the list for him:

    1. Ranbir Kapoor:
He is a talented actor. I feel he is even giving tough competition to Akki and Ajay at BO. His commercial films open well! And I feel media has already considered him as a Superstar. He has also won two filmfare awards, which is really good for a new actor. One bad thing is that he has proved himself in a Manly character and in action genre.

    2/3/4. Ranveer Singh:
I am laughing at those fools who are calling him a waste. His performance has been appriciated in almost all of his films. He is a Very good actor and an impressive dancer as well. As for looks, it depends on the eyes of beholder. I found him cool, stylish and extremely energetic. He was being compared with Ranbir during Ramleela and Gunday. But Kill Dil brought him down. Still, he has ambitious Bajirao Mastani!

    2/3/4. Shahid Kapoor:
He is a talented actor and dancer. But he has given so many flops and disaster. Only 3 Hits in 12 years! Haider is a landmark film in his career. He has Shandaar and Udta Punjab in his list which should turn to be good films !

    2/3/4. Varun Dhawan:
He is good looking and a good dancer too. I don’t find him that good in acting. He was fairly good in Badlapur and Humpty Sharma. In SOTY and MTH, He was average. He has a good fan following among youth. He has big projects like Shuddhi. I like him.

    5. Siddharth Malhotra: How can one be so good looking? Lookswise, he is the best one among these youngsters. He has to work on his acting. He has a good fan following.

    6. Sushant Singh Rajput:
He has been part of good films like Kai Po Che, Shuddh Desi Romance and DBB! But he lacks the mass-appeal.

    7. Arjun Kapoor: He cann’t dance, cann’t act, doesn’t look that good, doesn’t have a good body. He has a certain mass-appeal.

  • Rk gonna be the unique kind of actor. Yes some of film iz nt apprct by audince bt rk will definatly click again to stop haters mouth :)

  • No actor will ever have a biggest career opening like Hrithik. Not even salwoman, tingu or srg@y could give a debut film as huge blockbuster as Kaho na pyar hai. Hrithik is a hollywood level actor who can compete with bradley Cooper, leo dicaprio.

  • I just don’t like arjun kapoor.. Too much over confidence.. Ranveer was good but after gunday he became crappy.. N I can’t tolerate arjun kapoor.. Please change your attitude

  • as indicine said form is temporary but class is permanent , ranbir is easily future superstar, adter him shahid also is talented and good looking. varun will give tough fight to them. He is similar to them but will be more popular at b and c centres ie.. among masses
sid has neen intelligent enough to seprate him from these actors. He is doing intense movies and it suits him. He will definitely have a different set of fans which will help him in becoming big
tiger shroff who is not mentioned here will be best action hero of coming genration.
and if things fall in place he might be biggest superstar too
ranveer and arjun are too loud to become superstar.
sushant should go aamir khan way . Initailly , he won’t be liked much but he should follow his heart and give us movies like detective byomukesh bakshy.
thses are actors who I beleive will be huge superstars only if hollywood doesn’t bollywood

  • Ranveer is so irritating and a nautanki that that he reminds me of srk , both are irritatingly overacting over-actors and yes both of them look equally ‘opposite of handsome’ :D

Though ranbir is good looking with an acting talent to back it up with his steady fan base he lacks the ability to pull masses to his movies, he belongs to the categories of aamirs & hrithiks but aamir & hrithik have significant mass following along with huge class following , so if ranbir can manage to woo masses then he can be the next aamir or hrithik .

Many are of the view that varun is salman khan in the making but it wouldn’t be that easy because salmans ,aamirs & hrithiks are once in a lifetime superstars and no one can even come close to them forget about eclipsing their stardom , they are absolute superstars !

  • Varun nd sid r close.
In indicine varun has more fan but in twitter sid has highest fan following in younger generation.

  • For me both Ranbir & Ranveer will make it BIG because both are flawless performers & Spontaneous & Effortless & Versatile too… They are both equally Passionate about their work… Ranbir just need to get back his Focus towards his work & Ranveer comparatively has calmed down a lot & a wonderful performer… His stage show performances are a treat to watch.. Varun needs to brush up his acting skills, Sid I dont know(haven’t seen much of his work), Arjun is unfortunately not loved by many, Shahid dont have that huge fan following, Sushanth is okay….

  • Where is emraan hashmi ????
    .. @indicine…

If u have included @emraan hashmi in this list.. He could have won by a huge margin…

@indicine U don’t have any idea abt online following of emraan hashmi…. Its huge on twitter / fb..

Just his producers under-utilise him and what lacks is publocity and media backing… …

And ajay devgn, akki also not dance too much…

So there is chance that emraan can br next ajay-akki…
