‘The day I make film for critics, I’ll lose money’ – Rohit Shetty

Other people might fear critics but not director Rohit Shetty, who believes they are his lucky charm – every film they trash goes on to work magic at the box office!

The man, known for slapstick cinema like the “Golmaal” series and “All The Best: The Fun Begins”, says he focusses on audiences while designing a project.

“Critics are my lucky charm. I am fine if critics thrash my film, but the audience likes it. The day I make a film for critics I’ll lose a lot of money and I don’t want to do that,” said Shetty in an interview.

His next offering “Bol Bachchan” falls in the tried and tested slapstick category. Releasing Friday, it will see Ajay Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan trying to tickle the funny bone along with co-stars Asin Thottumkal and Prachi Desai.

Shetty, who has also made the full-on action film “Singham”, denies having “any formula”.

“Yes, I target the audience. I just want to make people happy and entertain them and that is the most important thing for me.”

Any plans to make films in some other genre?

“I don’t know. It should come from my heart more than anything else. I am happy making the films I am making because it is loved by my audience. They are happy watching my kind of a film.”

“Ten years down the line, I will be making the same stuff, but I am happy that the audience likes it. There is a smile on their faces when they watch my films,” he said.

Son of the legendary fight master Shetty, the 39-year-old made his Bollywood debut as a director with 2003 film “Zameen”.

Unlike some others, he doesn’t believe in extensive promotions.

“For that you need to be confident about your product and today the audience is quite smart. Creating controversies is not going to help. If you are honest, you prepare them and tell them what the film is all about. They will come to see your film and it will be a success,” he said.

“Promotion is important. But you should be honest in telling what your product is and you should not misguide and cheat the audience. I don’t like to talk about my work because by the grace of god people know what a Rohit Shetty film is about. Then why try to do some gimmick?” he said.

Refusing to comment on the promotional techniques of his colleagues, he added that ” producers have their own idea of promoting the film and I am no one to judge their work”.

“…I don’t like to be judged by my colleagues; if I want that respect from them, I have to respect them in the same way.”

Most of Shetty’s films have one thing in common — good friend Ajay Devgn. And there’s no lobby at work, he says.

“There is no lobby, no camp and no club. It is just that you become friends, you become comfortable with a few people, you gel with a few people and you don’t gel with a few people so I think that’s how the term called lobby comes in.”

  • Bilkul sahi kaha Rohit Shetty ne.critics ko khush karne ke chakkar me producer.director aur actor apna paisa duba dete hain.indian people itna dukhi hai ki woh movie is liye dekhne jata hai ki woh thode der ke liye khus ho sake.Mangal Pandey.Veer.Ra.One.Gujarish.aur Blue aise hi movies hai.

  • i dont completely agree with him.. Films should be able to get a balance between public response and critical response..such as ZNMD, Rockstar, Wake Up Sid, Koi Mil Gaya, Veer Zaara..They had the balance. Most of the time directors go only for public response and make some crap movies like Bodyguard, Ready (most Salman movies), Rowdy Rathore..etc

I dont want to point anyone..but a film maker should be responsible of giving people entertainment in a good way..not with craps. and there should be classics as well to balance the cinema

  • @meghani:i wil f##k you if you tel anything about salman sir and aamir sir…….just wait and watch ek tha tiger how it will creates history and broke all bollywood box office records within 2 weeks….!!!salman sir upcoming future movies wil gonna blockbusters so he is set for next 2-3 years ,he gonna rock dis year too wid 2 biggest blockbusters of bollywood ek tha tiger an dabangg 2….my challenge to @ll srk fans salman gonna beat srk very easily and after dis year people wil start leaving comparision wid salman khan wid shahrukh khan he is such a big loser(hahahaha ra.one and don-2 cant beat bodyguard and ready record )EK THA TIGER GONNA BE ALL TIME BLOCKBUSRE mark my words..!!!!

  • @ srk is SRK doing a new film ek tha taklu??? no he must do ek tha buddha!!!! & salman is doing the right film!! EK THA TIGER!!

  • @Sunil: I said I’m not pointing at any director.. Yes..I pointed out Salman because most of the time he only thinks of entertainment and do films without any story..

  • @@BEING HUMAN: you can do wat ever..Salman is doing crap movies..its for sure..and he’s not a good actor..just an entertainer.I’m really sorry i couldnt mention 3 idiots ,taare zameen par, Lagaan (most of the aamir khan movies) there and as well as Raajneeti (3 idiots has the largest box office collection..just imagine how nice the movie was..with critical acclaim and as well as box office collection . a movie should be like that).. Ek tha Tiger will become a box office success for sure, since there are fans like u who will like any crap with a big star in it. same happened with Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ready as well. (Dabangg i would say is still OK)..

  • @@BEING HUMAN: and to note; im not that much of a SRK fan. but surely i luv srk coz, he is a mind blowing actor. but i do feel now new comers should come to the top. From the new generation I like Ranbir a lot, specially i like his guts to do such kinds of movies. and from your comment itself u show that what ever film salman will do you will love it. you dont want anyway to welcum new actors to the industry. and u’ll do wat ever to hate and let down SRK. that’s really sad.
Salman is a good human being..i have seen that..but as an actor..what ever blockbusters he will give..he is a flop actor..because actor should be balanced between critical acclaim and box office success

  • @MEGHNA people like movie for enjoyment not want to go there and cry after paying 200rs for movie ticket about SALMAN he is the master of entertainer without cheap dialogues and bed scenes or a kissing lip lock scene where people can go full family and enjoy the movie together I hope you understand the fact.

  • @MEGHNA which critic says Salman is a bad actor never i heard with anyone TARAN ADARSH and many other never said that Salman is a bad actor because of him only industry actor knows what is style what is body building example is Hirthik and new chap ISHAQZADE fame.

  • Moreover if you are talking about SRK take the movie out of YRF and KARAN Johar what left behind and this one I am asking to all SRK fans.

  • chill guys
    we all are fighting here
and the stars like salman khan are stars and there movies are intertaining but not more than that
    so …. stop fighting
