Sultan Music Review

The seasoned and supremely talented duo of Vishal-Shekhar have been entrusted with the music direction responsibility of arguably the biggest Hindi movie of 2016 i.e. Yash Raj Films’s ‘Sultan’. Although they have worked before with YRF in many musical hits like ‘Salaam Namaste’, ‘Tashan’, ‘Tara Rum Pum’, ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ and the most recent ‘Fan’; this is going to be their maiden outing with the biggest of them all - Salman Khan.

Now, composing for a movie featuring current biggest star has its own pros as well as cons. Well, if we look at the greener side, the album will have maximum listeners and every song will get more than required attention. We have seen that due to lack of demand, many master compositions in relatively smaller movies go unnoticed. But in a movie like Sultan, each song has the potential to reach out to the widest nook and corner of the country and hence desperate attempt by a singer of the caliber of Arijit Singh to retain his song in the album is completely justifiable.

However, on the flip side, there is an industry of Salman Khan fans who are having exponentially high expectations from the music of Sultan. And God forbid if the songs are not chartbusters, strong waves of criticism will come from all quarters targeting the music directors. So without further ado, let’s review the music album and find out if Vishal-Shekhar have successfully lived up to one of the biggest challenge of their career so far.

Baby Ko Bass Pasand Hai: The album opens with a bang as this highly energetic song boasts of a catchy tune. It bears a resemblance to Khan’s 2015 chartbuster ‘Selfie Lele Re’. Both the songs have powerful vocals by Vishal Dadlani, typical massy lyrics and mediocre Rap by Badshah. Apart from the tagline ‘Baby ko Bass Pasand Hai’ having the signature tune (which is enough for First Day First Show Fans to rejoice), there is nothing special about this song. (3 on 5)

Jag Ghoomeya: Here comes the song for which reportedly Arijit recorded earlier but the album features male version sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and female version by Neha Bhasin. It’s a soulful composition perfectly rendered by Rahat and it’s a treat to have him crooning for Salman after ‘Surili Akhiyon Wale‘, ‘Tere Mast Mast‘, ‘Meri Ada Bhi‘, ‘Teri Meri‘ and ’Dagabaaz Re‘. Female version by Neha Bhasin is kind of unplugged and touches right chords straightaway. Irshad Kamil’s meaningful lyrics deserve a special mention. (4 on 5)

440 Volt: Vishal-Shekhar have nailed the initial catchy tune of this full on peppy and fun number with innovative ‘tapori’ lyrics. Mika sings with passion and his crooning is pleasantly much sober than his usual loud and blasting dance numbers like ‘Dhinka Chika’ or ‘Jumme Ki Raat’. He has given Haryanvi touch to the words and is superbly aided by naughty yet lively beats throughout. (4 on 5)

Sultan: The title track is a high-powered composition and provides an adrenaline rush which leaves the listener gasping for more. Sukhwinder Singh and Shadab Faridi have lent energetic vocals. We have seen classic title songs for sports based movies ‘Chak De India’ and ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ and Sultan’s title track has the potential to join the list. There is another version ‘Rise of Sultan‘ rendered by Shekhar himself. It’s relatively slow but the chorus arrangements succeed to leave an impact. (4 on 5)

Sachi Muchi: Mohit Chauhan and Harshdeep Kaur make their presence felt in ‘Sachi Muchi’ which comes as a pleasant surprise in an album filled with dance numbers, inspirational and melodious songs. The track is like a light hearted conversational track similar on the lines as Mohit’s ‘Chicken’ song for Khan in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. (3 on 5)

Bulleya: Arguably the best song of the album, ‘Bulleya’ is a master sufi composition sung by lead folk singer Angaraag Mahanta popularly known as Papon. Irshad Kamil is in top form with lines like ‘Kuch rishton ka namak hi doori hota, naa milna bhi bohot zaroori hota hai’. It’s a mood uplifting number with bewitching qualities throughout and leaves a long lasting impression on the listener. (4.5 on 5)

Tuk Tuk: First Class! In this one single track itself, Vishal-Shekhar have shown their tremendous range as music composers. It starts off as an engaging traditional folk song with desi Haryanvi chants. Noorani sisters convert this to a full on foot tapping number with their enthusiastic vocals and then enters Vishal Dadlani with his superb rap. Song will be picturized on Anushka and might be used as entry song of her character in the movie. (4 on 5)

Overall, Vishal-Shekhar have managed to bring so much variety in one single album which is commendable. Each composition sounds different from another whether it be a DJ song (Baby), Melody (Jag Ghoomeya), Sufi (Bulleya), Tapori (440 Volts), Folk (Tuk Tuk), Motivational (Sultan) and Fun (Sachi Muchi). The final result is like a delicious Indian ‘Thali’ with all the required dishes.

The movie is super-hot in trade and the theatrical trailer has further raised the bars of expectations. The music album release is like a cherry on the cake. Yash Raj Films have the license to go for the full Monty now. Expect full throttle promotions and master release strategies in the days to come. It’s a foregone conclusion that 2016 EID is going to witness a plethora of box office records.

  • Someone wanted to know how xzone is able to come on site and comment so quickly on an article. Well it is obvious that he is a part of the indicine team and is well aware of all articles to be posted before they are posted. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that he is so hot in the pants, consumed with jealously and hatred that he sits at the computer panting like a dog in heat just waiting for articles on Salman Khan and other actors so he can show his lack of intelligence and someone who knows nothing but trying to believe that he does.

  • Hey Abhishek, very good review of the music of Sultan. Really looking forward to watch this movie now !! All songs are hit :)

  • I loved the album. Sultan will be blockbuster for sure. But now one thing is proved that @Ajay Rocks is the one behind this fake ID @Ajay-salman fan and bashes Aamir on his articles. Shame on you @Ajay Rocks. You are exposed. I thought you were never bashing Aamir and you used to respect him, but now you showed your true colors. Shame on you.

  • @mekanik:

It’s simple…. Bhai clashed like a MARD but unfortunately lost it to masterclass script of Salim- Javed. Atleast Bhai didn’t run away from the battlefield in fear of losing like a coward..

  • @fasal kelawala:

So according to music of Kick, BB, PRDP etc are worst of the particular years. Fine, but see despite having worst music of the year those Bhai movies easily collected over 200cr and became blockbusters. But despite having chart buster music+Varun+ kajol+ Rohit shetty your Eid sodke bhagnewala’s excusewale didn’t surpassed even 150cr mark and bcm the biggest disappointment of the year..
That’s difference between Megastar Bhai & your 2rs tiny star!!!

  • @Fasal Kerela back from Mental Hospital…..Sanki..Music album which you call crap is praised by each and every critics, music lover and neutral audience…..which means that you are still a mentally retard animal (cannot call you person b/c the way you behave is not like human), so please go back to your mental hospital so that normal people like us have not to bear you more……

  • @ssr are you an expert in music? Do you hold any sort of degree in the composition of lyrics, songs etc. I don’t think so, so keep your big mouth shut because you are just blowing a lot of hot air. Let the experts and those that know do what they have to do and you go get a life elsewhere.

  • @Tiger
    Despite having
    Govinda+Katrina_lara+Chartbuster+David dhawan
ur bhai movie couldnt even cross non commercial, no heroine chak de india
Despite having: item dance+Comedy+multistarrer+nikhil adhvani, salaame ishq was a disaster
At least srk hasnt seen such phase

  • @4:30pm:
    You chameleon…..
Your global bhagoda took 14 years to break HAHK’s record, struggled for 20 years to give a ATHG, struggling for HGOTY for last 9 years, even yet to give a HGOTD. What about that???

  • @tiger-the real chuha,Bhai is a mard! please crack some more jokes please.who told you KING KHAN run away?HE sacrificed EID for HIS little brother ADITYAJI.but alas, how can you understood that, your insecure idol is that much insecure who can only take advantage of someone’s belief and don’t know what is sacrifice.actually your bhojpuri logic says HE run away and OUR belief says that KING KHAN sacrificed.after all whh THE KING OF CLASHES will fear of that man/woman who through out life only gave flops in CLASHES?and it’s your Bhai who clarified before clashes—-“agar clash hoga toh loss mera hi hoga”.now don’t say it’s generous he was insecure at that time.but salman spared because this time he came with YRF ,WHICH has strong connection with KING KHAN,KING KHAN never wanted it’s loss any day,if salman would have come alone, then definitely again RAEES BHAI would have thrashed your puny idol one more time.so enjoy this time due to YRF,but again when this happens with out YRF,then definitely your loser idol agin see his aukat.chal aish kar tu bhi kya yaad rakhega.

@tiger once again, yeah kick, prdp, dabang, ready a movie’s song are crap according to a genuine music lover.but yeah it’s great legendary songs for classless rural area peoples across India who used to dance in these songs and Bhai knew it very well.but if he will come with out EID,then definitely these music too can’t help him even HARSHALI/KABIR Papa too.

@navin,who said I able to listen those 3 songs?otherwise you can say I beared those songs watched for review just like how critics watches even worst movies only to review.and I’ll watch sultan for sure not in theatres though but from downloaded print from friends.

and don’t try to degrade beautiful party songs like Criminal, that has a swift beat to make everybody dance unlike this baby ko bhains pasand hain by shaking like a buffalo made me vomiting when I watched it 1st time.and sallu’s expression is even more bullshit than his 3rd grade dhinka chika dance steps.

@bajan isis, more than anyone it’s you want to know the lightening speed of Brother @Xzone.just think how you and your prisoner mates came every article during the release of FAN which is not doesn’t deserve any hatred still you targeted it.so now it’s payback time behn fans, how can people spare a classless 3rd grade movie like sultan by not bashing it?it deserves bashing, thrashing from all in any manner.after all neither Ali Zafar knows how to direct nor bhai knows how to act.

Honest fans will agree sultan’s album is a crap.just think how salman like star even can be disgraceful and insecure to even a singer liek ARIJIT.,ROFL.

  • @indixine,my 12:48 AM comments is too important and unabusive too as I removed some of abusive words.so kindly publish this of my most important comment and show it to all, thanks.

  • @tiger, salman also took 16 years to break his own record of HAHK .and why u only see Hgoty?it is not a true factor of success.see srk’s hit ratio and success ratio and compare with salman.

  • 440 volt song just ruined the entire album for me. I am a salman fan but this song is just pathetic. All other songs are awesome just hoping that they wont include that cheap song in the film
