Sultan has just completed a record-breaking extended week at the box office. The film has gone past all previous Eid releases, excluding Kick and Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
Sultan also became the highest grosser of the year, beating the business of ‘The Jungle Book’ in 6 days and smashing the record of the previous highest Hindi grosser by a margin of Rs 100 crore in just 9 days. In other words, Sultan will collect about the same as the previous highest grosser (Airlift) and second highest grosser (Housefull 3) in 10 days.
Even the first Monday (6th day) collections of Sultan was higher than the opening day collections of all films this year, except FAN (which released on a partial holiday). The Monday footfalls was higher than the opening day of FAN too.
The only small disappointment came in the form of the weekday trend. The drops were higher than expected, but only when compared to the high level of business during the weekend. With a better trend, the film would’ve had a chance of crossing the lifetime collections of Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
That aside, Sultan is one of the biggest grossers of all time and the 13th blockbuster of Salman Khan’s career. He also has 6 back-to-back blockbusters during Eid (only exception being 2013, when he didn’t have a release).
The hold on Friday morning is good for Sultan. The film remains the first choice at multiplexes. The occupancy was higher than this week’s release Great Grand Masti, which has opened very poorly at multiplexes. Business on Saturday and Sunday will decide where Sultan finishes.
